PUBG back down from their lawsuit with Epic Games

PUBG Corp has backed down from their lawsuit vs Epic Games according to new court records revealed today by Bloomberg. The lawsuit was filed a few weeks ago and it alleged Epic stole PUBG's copyright and features.

PUBG Corp. sent a letter of withdrawal to Epic Games Inc.’s attorneys on Monday and the South Korean case has since closed, according to the website of the local court system. PUBG and its law firm confirmed the action but wouldn’t say why, nor whether a settlement had been reached. Representatives for Epic in Korea had no immediate comment.

 

Both are part-owned by social media and gaming giant Tencent Holdings Ltd. and have carved out commanding positions in the Battle Royale format. But PUBG contended in January that Epic’s Fortnite mimicked many of the characteristics of its own title. The copyright infringement accusation came as PUBG separately sued China’s Netease Inc. for allegedly basing two games -- Rules of Survival and Knives Out -- on its product.

 

PUBG, an affiliate of South Korean studio Bluehole Inc., has sold more than 44 million copies of its marquee title for personal computers and Microsoft Xbox since its launch last year. But the Hunger Games-style game has seen its popularity wane as Fortnite’s has waxed. Like PUBG, Fortnite features 100 people slaughtering each other, but differs by letting players build fortifications similar to Minecraft and using cartoon-like graphics.

PUBG has recently lost a lot of ground Steam and it's numbers have almost halved in the past few months as players are switching over to the ever so popular Fortnite BR. And if PUBGs steam reviews are to be believed, their game is heading for a collision course with the moon.

Okay, I haven't played PUBG at all, what exactly are the main issues and the huge gripes with it, hackers? Bugs? Loot boxes?

Initially, it was unoptimization. The game ran like shit, even on powerful GPU's. (You pratically needed a 1080 ti to run max settings at triple digit FPS, on 1080p... Commonly you'd dip into the 30's on the lowest settings with mid ranged GPU's like my 970)

 

They've fixed some of the issues with how much resources the game consumes, but it's still a bear of a game, and recently has been plagued a bit by hackers and cheaters (I've never encountered them myself, but they do exist) For this, I'm not sure if the issue is because they're not doing anything about it, or they're ignoring it.

In terms of bugs, people have reported disconnecting issues and glitches within game. They did patch it to allow you to rejoin a game you're in if you haven't died, but de synchronizing with the game is still an issue.

 

Loot boxes exist, but they're cosmetics only so they're 100% okay IMO. 

I think two major issues PUBG has is that the game is A: not free in a world of free Battle Royale's, and B, requires the most powerful hardware to achieve similar graphical settings than just about every other version (ESPECIALLY on console)

Honestly their lawyer probably sent them a bill and said "You can be PUBG the company that stood on principle, used every single fucking penny earned from their hit game to bring this to court and still loss AND went bankrupt doing so or you can be PUBG the company that actually got to use their money for you know, some other games in the future"

Game performance isn't that big of a deal IMO, a friend of mine is able to run the game just fine with a 1050 Ti and a G4560. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The game runs like a turd.

1440p with 1080ti and mix of Medium/High/Ultra settings and I struggle to hit 144FPS. The game textures look like an ass, you get pop-in a lot, etc...

With lower end cards like GTX 1050 or 1050ti people struggle to hit 60FPS on 1080p at LOW/MEDIUM settings.

The net code is absolutely broken. They say 60-tick rate but the reality is that at the start of the game when all 100 players are alive you get 8 to 10-tick rate at best with over 120ms delay in hit detection.

60-tick rate is reality only at the end of the game with less than 15 players alive.

 

There are apparently many cheaters... I honestly dont care, I dont think I met many, but they are definitely a thing.

The new Event pass is a joke. You complete "missions" like "bandage yourself ten times" and gain XP and lvl up from that and then you get some rewards like skins, etc... except most of the skins look absolutely terrible and you have to pay $10 for the event pass to claim the rewards for which I would not care even if they were free.

My biggest gripe with PUBG is how the whole game revolves around camping, simply said, unless you are a god player with the best of skills, you are stuck camping.

 

I now play Fortnite, did have some issues adapting to the stupidly dumb building mechanic that everyone abuses, but after a while you get used to it.

Tbh, this lawsuit should've never even started.  I bet their lawyer, when presented with the full argument & evidence or whatever, turned around and said, "If you actually think you're gonna win this, then you're a fucking idiot."

I doubt that, it is not disclosed why it was dropped and if it was initiated to begin with it was done by their legal department which felt they had a case. I would guess there was a non disclosed settlement involved.

I don't know what they would've even fought for. That's like if id and Valve went head to head in court because Team Fortress 2 is, in a sense, an arena shooter not unlike Quake is.

Probably because of the Lawsuit.

 

Gamers want to game. And a good game. With alienating other Gamers, you alienate your target audience.

Its highly likely that some play both games....

 

And it seems like they didn't kwow what they were doing as well...
Sometimes its better to do nothing, than do something and don't know what you are doing...

 

And of course the Performance Issues this Game had...

It was a fight that Bluehole probably would've lost, and even if they won, they'd be setting a really bad precedent.

If it isn't a blatant copy and just the principle of the game, you shouldn't sue, even if you are in the right.

Because there is no way to win this thing, you will loose anyway!
 

Because if that would have happened, people would call for boycotting PUBG...

Only if you want to play it that way.  I would only consider myself a better than average to good player and I don't camp at all.

Can people get over this optimization shit? They've done nothing but improve on it the past month yet people keep with the horde mind. Things continue to improve more and more and yet the bitching and complaining continue. The only thing that should have a ton of bitching as of recently is their event pass. You can't expect it to be like CS and run on a potato at 200FPS. It just will not happen. Maps 4x the size as Fortnite, far more complicated looting and gunplay. All on the unreal engine? An engine that many games have had trouble optimizing for?

It's been improving, as of Update 14 it drops to a mere 20-24Hz and can average at about 40-50Hz. Hopefully the next major performance update pushes to keep the servers at a stable 60Hz. It can reach it at times but I think they should focus on making it less jumpy. Rather it be at a stable 40-45Hz then be at 60Hz at the end and 20 at the start.
