@terrytek if you can't find the right oil you should get a grade that is as close as possible to OEM spec.

I wouldn't run 5w-30 if 10w-60 is required. Probably the easiest thing to find would be 10w-40 and that's what I would try first, it's closer to the factory weight than 5w-30 is.

Running 0w40 in the Golf right now. VW recommends 5w40. You don't have to use the exact OEM recommended oil, but it's a good idea, especially if the vehicle is still under warranty. Anything happens to the engine, they can't say you used the wrong type of oil. ;)

Out side of warranty, go nuts. Check vehicle specific forums as people sometimes find other weights of oil that work better than the factory recommendations.

To me there has always been little to no point in the weight of the cold oil. I mean it warms up so fast... You really just need it to flow for that first minute or so. So 0w-xx always seems like a good choice to me.

It matters here where I live. Outside temp today is -9C. Was -15C this morning. ;)

Coolant is optional where you live. Like, you plug the block heater into an outlet inside the car while your driving so the oil doesn't gel. O.o

 

Well, it's not THAT bad. lol. I've never had to use a block heater where we live. Some people do though, with diesel trucks etc. Even on days when it's been -25 or colder, car still starts fine.

well, amazon does have 10w60 oil, just different brands. i keep asking, does anybody know if liqui-moly is a good brand? all i see on ebay for 10w60 is liquimoly and a couple listings for castrol full synthetic.

Actually @terrytek liqui moly is supposedidly German engineered so whatever that's worth

apparently it contains molybdenum disulfide, hence the name, to provide better lubrication qualities under harsh conditions. maybe it's a worthwhile purchase?

I haven't heard anything bad about LM, they win tests on the regular. They seem to be a reputable german company. The thing is that additives often do fuck all, and just make the oil more expensive, but maybe just give it a test and see how it looks in a few thousand miles

so i seafoamed my dad's protege, and it actually works, it sounds a lot quieter at idle, and it does feel like its gained some performance. i think it was worth the time i was revving it to 5k rpm. god it sounded brutal.

I ran a half can through my s10 and it seemed to help a bit. I'll probably try and run $50 worth of the stuff that goes in the gas through the engine and see how much carbon it removes this summer.

i put the entire can into the engine. that's not bad, is it? i mean as long as it runs quietly and doesn't idle roughly, its fine, right? i don't think i introduced hydrolock into the engine.
