Internet in the US country side does suck.

Thankfully, others are finding different ways to get good Internet speeds by using microwave shots or 4G high gain antennas to use the cellular network.  I am already testing without the antenna.  Pull down like 22Mbps with 99ms pings.  Once my 10dB antenna goes up (waiting on adapter), the speeds will go up and pings should drop to around to 40-50ms.  My end goal is to get my hands on a 20-25 dB antenna with a pre-amp.  The 4G spec one I am looking at comes out December.  If I can pull off the speeds I pull within the city's border (110-130Mbps down/40-50Mbps up), I be happy as a lark.  The kicker, cheaper than the satellite on the monthly bill.

 

Only bad thing, if out in the country side, you have to be wiling to buy good equipment and do some work to get the setup up.

But where do you get the internet from to begin with?  And is it full duplex?

I considered maybe using one, but I couldn´t bring myself to mess with them.  If you want to do that right, it´s probably a lot of work and costs as much as, or more then, a computer, and it remains limited to that particular purpose.

 

No raid on a RPI, unless you run software raid over USB . For small things like a personal mail and web server its quite good. Its small and uses very little electricity. The flop side is that its not that beefy in terms of computational power and misses a few things that a normal PC has(SATA, PCI expansion, etc)....

Yeah tell that to Belgium... 2 big ISP's with a few that use the network of 1 of the 2 giants and somehow prices are still stupidly high and somehow data limits are still a thing.

 

Still don't understand why there's not a single company that just spits out fiber everywhere here, we are small AF and we have much moneyz ready to spend.

It might be difficult or impossible to get spamassassin to work then.  Raid is a requirement, and connecting disks via USB sucks.

 

I also need mariadb and a few other things, and I need it to be reliable.  That probably rules out an RPI.

Off one of the cellular providers.  Pretty much shop around for an Unlimited package and check coverage and where the towers are at.

Lucky for me a Verizon tower is under three miles away.  Going to use them until I can test the Sprint clear wire bands coverage next year (which will be even cheaper and is true Unlimited since government mandates the usage of those bands).

 

My sat bill is 86 bucks, the Verizon bill going to be 75 bucks for the Unlimited package.  That is around 120 bucks less a year.  If the Sprint clear wire works next year when I test it, that only 500 bucks for the first year then 400 bucks next year (so around 40 bucks or so a month).  I am pissed with being stuck with only satellite or dail-up as options.

They only want to make money, so why make investments when they can screw their customers all over?  They have zero interest in delivering a good product because that would cost them more, and the customers don´t have a choice but to put up with what they can get, if they can get something at all.

How´s the satellite connection?  I´m considering that because it might be better and not much more expensive, but I have my doubts, and ping times of 750ms are basically inacceptable.

Understandable that large cities don't have the bandwidth.  Major advantage I get by hitting an tower in the country side (less users hitting it).

 

Depends on who you get as the provider.  Satellite is going to have bad ping times.  If super lucky, I manage 450ms pings (on a good clear day).  Most of the time though 640-670ms pings are the average for me.  What super sucks for me: the 20GB cap on data.  Not sure how satellite providers in EU would be like.

Well the 2 big isp's have almost 100% coverage of the whole country so they do compete with each other.

But for some reason they don't and a third competitor can easily jump in, put fiber basically everywhere (again, belgium is a small country) and compete the sh*t out of the other 2.

 

Prices of the 2 big ISP's is going up actually (it went up in price like 2-3 times already this year) so as time moves on it's getting a bigger and bigger potential market and more profit. A new competitor can easily ask 50 bucks for 100/100 with no data limit. The competition is stuck with copper and coax so fiber can easily compete them to death.

 

Again, belgium isn't big, you can go from the furthest south-east corner to the furthest north-west corner with a car in 3-4 hours... You can even do it with public transport in a single day.

Well, Switzerland is tiny too, but we pay about much more for such speeds. If you are lucky enougth to have a capable connection. But most do not.

Aye, lack of competitive pricing is indeed shitty, but the fact that infrastructure costs are greatly reduced the smaller the nation still stands true.

wow i think i am really lucky. I had 100 Mb/s for 2 years 5$ a month now they cut the traffic in half and i have 50Mb/s for 5$ a month.

Yes, the higher the population desity, the cheaper it is per person.

At least one of our three ISPs is offering unlimitted 4G internet with somwhat acceptable speeds (40 - 50 MBit/s) for 35 CHF (= 35 USD). But the cable we have is ridiculous.

I'd be interested to see how many customers are actually taking these plans on.  One of the chief reasons given for not offering Gb in Australia is lack of consumer interest.

Also how the hell do you get 2000mbps? It's expensive but holy crap that's fast.

I have to pay 100+ euro's for 200/20 WITH data limit, but i don't (i pay about 40 for 80/5 unlimited)

yah it's avaible where I am but no one on the lower levels has any fucking idea and treated me like I was stupid. High installation fee. Took months to go forward with it, but I dropped it once they added the 1TB cap nationwide and told me that on a 1Gb/s or 2Gb/s connection I'd still have to pay for that 30$ extra to remove the cap even though you could cross it in a  couple of hours saturating the connection.

The pricing doesn't make sense but it's not that bad depending what you get then tbh it's not that bad. I would get the same as the one you have tbh. Speed isn't great but price is good and it's unlimited, also i rarely use 80, usually it farts somewhere around 20-30 so higher speeds aren't very useful most of the time.
