AMD ships over 25,000 Radeon RX Vega graphics cards

YongKang

Apparently, RTG sold a LOT of RX Vega these last 2.5 weeks. It's really no surprise since people have been frustrated to not be able to get a RX Vega 64. But TweakTown has been able to get a hint of the number of cards that have been shipped, from an unknown source.

Source: http://www.tweaktown.com/news/58901/amd-ships-over-25-000-radeon-rx-vega-graphics-cards/index.html

Quote

[Anthony] spoke to an industry source who didn't want to be named today, who said that AMD have shipped over 25,000 cards in the last two and a half weeks since Radeon RX Vega hit the market. Remember that AMD has only launched Radeon RX Vega 64, and not the Radeon RX Vega 56, which will be the more popular card of the two.

I really wonder if the situation gonna improve with the RX Vega 56 launch. With all the recent info we got, RX Vega is bad at mining but Hollywood seems to be taking the Vega chips for rendering stations.. So what do you guys think? ?

Clarification: Anthony said he thinks his source meant Vega overall and not Vega 64 in particular.

Pretty interesting but also taking this with a grain of salt. Personally, I wouldn't buy either card but I want AMD to sell as many of these as possible.

Hopefully AMD sorts out the pricing issue and they learn from this launch. They need to claw back as much market share as can. Hopefully the consumer comes out on top

I hope so too. The RX Vega 56 is a great value if it can nail its announced MSRP.

Selling a lot is good but based on rumors about their margins on the cards it might not be all that much profit from all those cards.

Yeah, I watched gamers nexus video on this. Hopefully, AMD can make it back with the Ryzen sales.

In order to get larger orders of HBM2 made they need to place those orders. In order to justify those larger orders on the balance sheet they need to show the cards they've got sell.

They've probably been regretting it for at least 18 months, but there was nothing much they could do about it.

This right here is why the perf/watt is so bad, they had to use every bit of silicon that accepts a current and had to overvolt to make sure that the gpus that should've straight up been tossed/given to HIS can be put on an RX Vega and shipped. They really should've planned this out better.

they did the same with the rx 480, i think its a bad call because it makes the cards look bad in reviews which will reduce the amount of people buying the cards so in the end it would have been better to just trow away the bad chips

in 2.5 weeks guys, I find this pretty ok. Also, Vega for gaming while bad, for rendering is amazing. They even have those SSG cards for 8k timeline scrubbing.

So they didnt expect selling more than 25 000 then.

Does anyone know how many units other cards have sold?

25K does not tell me a whole lot because, for all I know, 25K might be low.

It's quite low imo. This is AMDs shipping by quarter for all cards combined (no info on specific cards)

JPR-QuarterlyShipments

This is the source from 2016 though, should give you a slight picture.

Source: https://www.extremetech.com/gaming/240208-gpu-sales-surged-2016-strong-demand-high-end-desktop-laptop-gaming

But then again, AMD shipped over 100k Polaris cards when they were released (3 models), and the demand was much higher iirc.

EDIT: http://techreport.com/news/30482/report-amd-shipping-100k-more-polaris-10-gpus-to-board-partners

So if AMD sold 3.8 mil units total in Q3 2016 that is 316,666 units per week. 25,000 (10,000 per week) isn't much at all then, 3.15% of total sales assuming same units shipping now as then.

Keep in mind that doesn't actually mean they've sold them; just that they've been shipped to end points (retailers & system integrators) or have simply been sold to distributors.

I mean you can debate it's HBM2, new stuff and all, but it was delayed a bunch of times. I was hoping the Fiji situation would not happen again but seems it did (albeit you can argue that AMD has more Vega cards than they did Fury at launch).

This news is kinda deflating for those of us hoping it would make a difference to the GPU market. This might explain why some shops sold out so quick,  there just not there to order/stock.   To put things in perspective Nvidia still sell something above 8M units a quarter (even in q1 and q2).

Doesn't look for amd, but it sure looks good for me getting a chance to get a 56!

Only problem is the aftermarket cards STILL aren't out...

Ermmm...if we look at the trends for the RX480 or 1080 or 1070 or well really any card that has reference then aftermarket, you'd find it takes like at least a month before aftermarket cards start coming out so...not surprised? :D
