if vega is faster than Volta all nvidia has to do is drop price a little and still outsell AMD and then blow them back into the dark ages next gen

Be it GDDR5X or HBM2, what i want to see is if Vega is able to beat current Pascal to the ground and if wether or not it has a fighting chance against Volta, in real day to day high performance applications (games and alike).

 

Come out already!!!!

 

Gahhhhhh, it seems like were waiting for Graphene to become available to the consumer, which wont happen in the next 10 years.

I don't care what kind of memory NVidia uses. As long as there's sufficient bandwidth to feed the GPU, I see no need for HBM on graphics cards. G5X is on par with HBM as is.

How do you figure that?  Last I checked HBM had well over 10x the bandwidth

nvm apparently they have taken to rating it in a completely different way but it is close

I also wonder if this means we'll see consumer Volta this year... just slap some 12-14 Gbps G5X on the mainstream and save G6 for the next Titan and Ti cards.

So GDDR6 is really 2-channel version of GDDR5X.  You can just stack a huge amount of it on there.  I guess a 16Gb card should work for a while, haha.

Couldnt care less. I dont see cards clock speeds being bottlenecked by memory speeds. So until we can resolve heat issues, the memory is least of a concern.

Personally, the only reason I like seeing HBM2 on the cards, is because it's so densely integrated with the core.  No more having the chips spread out around the GPU, instead it will be part of the die.  Other than that, I agree with you.

HBM vs GDDR, reminds me of Betamax vs VHS. HBM is cool new tech that is superior. GDDR is good enough for now. HBM probably came a bit earlier than it needed to.

HBM isn't necessary on consumer cards yet, no Nvidia will not take any hit because of this because they're still well ahead of AMD in terms of performance.

The Nano when undervolted is a little beast.

What AMD should do if smart is bin the crap out of some Vega 10 chips for another Nano type card.
They already do it for Apple, considering their Radeon Pro 460 is a fully unlocked desktop RX 560, but uses nearly 50% less power for the same performance.

That on Vega, cram it into notebooks, and SFF cards; and it'll have a nice niché.

Why does this feel like people complaining sata SSDs are "slow" vs NVMe SSDs when all you're using it for is a boot drive? You're going to be gaming, who tf cares what the memory spec is when the GPU itself is capable?

The Polaris chips under volt really, really well. Some are getting stable OC at something like 25% less voltage. If they binned some of the chips, they can probably drop it a lot.
