AMD announces Q4 2016 financials, beats revenue guidance

Citadelen

So as the title says, AMD have released their Q4 financials, the main table is below, follow the link to the full report.

Screenshot_20170131-232433.jpg

Hilights:

  • Revenue was down 15% sequentially to $1.11 billion, beating expectations of an 18% decline.
  • The Computing & Graphics segment revenue increased by $128 million to $600 million while making a small operating loss of $21 million, this is opposed to a loss of $99 million a year ago.
  • Enterprise, Embedded & Semi-Custom experienced a $329 million decline in revenue to $506 million while making a profit of $47 million, a decrease of $12 million from the previous year. AMD attributes the lower operating income to increased R&D spending in this segment.
  • Long-term debt down $198 million to $1.435 billion, this is opposed to more than $2 billion the previous year.
  • Short-term debt is flat from the previous quater at $0, opposed to $230 million the previous year.
  • Cash reserves of $1.264 billion, up from $1.258 billion the previous quater and $785 million the previous year, an increase of $506 million.

TL;DR AMD is in a much more stable position financially than the previous year, with much more healthy deficits and slicing their debt in half.

Someone far more educated will be able to make some sense out of this data, but to me(I'm just a dumb programmer) it looks like AMD is still a sinking ship according to the numbers.

Looks like Polaris really did wonders for them :P

That's actually really nice to see, maybe AMD will soon start making a profit again, allowing more monies in R&D and their HQ back...

Far from it, when their new products launch next year they'll have a very healthy revenue stream to draw upon. This has been AMD's best year in ages, their flirting with profitability, capturing just 10% of the server marker with Naples would net $1 billion in revenue. Debt is no longer a problem, and they've got cash reserves of $1.3 billion.

Long story short, they're still in debt, but it's more normal amount that companies can be seen in companies. They're essentially much more stable now, which is very good.

Truthfully it all depends on ryzen/vega now... they currently are still losing money a lot of it but not as much, I think it was by the money they received from intel licensing/patent thing and china $200 million thing that they killed the debt with, the profit is very mediocre.

TLDR: Intel makes 16x as much money.

AMD still losing money.

AMD "doing better" is not losing *as much* money.

Also this is why AMD will never seriously compete against Intel in the future.  Intel makes as much money in 1 quarter as AMD is worth as a company in terms of market cap.

In theory, sure.  In practice there's dozens of reasons why they'll never make a dent.  I can go all day reeling off ways they're financially the equivalent of stage IV terminal cancer.  AMD: 1.7 billion in immediate liquidity.  Intel: 17 billion.

AMD reached the bottom with Bulldozer, it sells like shit, and it costs loads to make, Zen, no matter how it does, will improve AMD's bottom line. They won't go bankrupt, but they can certainly fall flat on their face.

Wait, they still lose money, but reduced the dept? How did they manage that? Sold a FAB or IP?

refinancing and restructuring of capital investment.

AKA: whatever profit they make goes into the long term but extremely high debt. Whilst they allow themselves to take a small loss to the budget. 150m or 200m may seem a lot, but when you are 2 billion+ in the red, what is 200m to that? nothing...

They also managed to increase their asset values. AKA they have silicon in stock, real estate, IP and other equipment. Thus they are able to refinance their loans, by taking a single large loan to pay for the multiple small ones.

Incase you wonder, yes that is a smart move. As the interest rate of multiple loans is far higher then that of a single large one, over time.

AMD used to be an extremely big player in the server market, they know what they are doing. Plus the server market isn't as fickle and stupid as the consumer market and actually knows how to evaluate a product.

Being in the business of actually buying and specing servers we don't give a damn what brand/sticker/logo or what ever is on it or in it. This is why AMD lost the server market so easily and quickly, there is no favoritism or brand loyalty. If AMD can deliver a good product at a good price they'll gain it back just as quickly as they lost it.

This makes me think of purchasing AMD stock.  Should I?  And how much?

But OT:  It's great to see that AMD is coming back up again.  Let's see what happens this year.

Currently focusing on my video game collection.

Lol 560% increase in value.

I was planning to buy a grand or so worth when it was in the $2 range, then got laid off and priorities obviously changed a bit.

Still kicking myself for that.  $2 is so low that it pretty much takes the shares becoming worthless to really take a large hit, and you don't often get that opportunity to buy into a huge company like that.

It's not quite at the level of people that bought $50 worth of BTC in 2010 then were too sketched out to actually buy drugs online with it and lost/squandered it.

SFF-ish:  Ryzen 5 1600X, Asrock AB350M Pro4, 16GB Corsair LPX 3200, Sapphire R9 Fury Nitro -75mV, 512gb Plextor Nvme m.2, 512gb Sandisk SATA m.2, Cryorig H7, stuffed into an Inwin 301 with rgb front panel mod.  LG27UD58.

Aging Workhorse:  Phenom II X6 1090T Black (4GHz #Yolo), 16GB Corsair XMS 1333, RX 470 Red Devil 4gb (Sold for $330 to Cryptominers), HD6850 1gb, Hilariously overkill Asus Crosshair V, 240gb Sandisk SSD Plus, 4TB's worth of mechanical drives, and a bunch of water/glycol.  Coming soon:  Bykski CPU block, whatever cheap Polaris 10 GPU I can get once miners start unloading them.

MintyFreshMedia:  Thinkserver TS130 with i3-3220, 4gb ecc ram, 120GB Toshiba/OCZ SSD booting Linux Mint XFCE, 2TB Hitachi Ultrastar.  In Progress:  3D printed drive mounts, 4 2TB ultrastars in RAID 5.

It's up to you if you are willing to bet that zeb release and Vega release will increase the value of the stock. If you think they are going to be a hit invest if not then dont. I think they will do well but I also think we miss the big spike
