I understand where you're coming from, but you're arguing that "Linux is bad because it's not popular". Sadly, many devs for the objectively best software do not support it, but that's less of a problem since you can run a VM (and restrict its access to the internet so it doesn't snoop).

That really is it's biggest problem. It can be easy to use but if you're going to require the average computer user to relearn how to use a computer they can barely use in the first place then you're automatically out of the running.

Thankfully you can make a distro with an interface that's almost exactly like Windows (without breaking patents, yadda yadda) and that'll help users make the change. But I'd rather not leave the fact that people are unwilling to learn alone. It's hard to help consumers out when they're too lazy to stand up for themselves.

Yeah. I hate that so many people don't even bother to learn anything about their computers. It's ridiculous that people would rather pay someone hundreds of dollars to fix their screw ups instead of actually learning what they're doing wrong and how to fix it.

 

I'm tossing Linux Mint on my laptop since it's too old to play games and it's been a good 7 or 8 years, or more, since I've looked into the state of Linux. Plus I want something really light weight since even Win10 feels sluggish on it.

i turned off windows update completely. i found a workaround and i was able to shut down windows update. but of course, its reversible, in case i need it.

Yeah....though I have found it good for playing old Windows 9* games under Wine. They play better on a Celeron M380+Intel 915GMA under WINE than they do under Windows XP.

I try to stay OS-neutral and have computers running Windows, Mac OS X and Linux now. They all have their strengths and weaknesses.

Whatever it's not like their updates were blocking much malware to begin with, and I have windows update disabled so microsoft can go to hell for all I care, also I'm sure someone else will have details on what's in the updates long before I get around to turning the updater back on.

• Windows is pretty great for a corporate environment, PC gamers and basic computer users, but it's had historic problems with stability (see: Windows Me) and since it's the most popular OS out there it's also the one with the most known security vulnerabilities. Go figure.
• Mac OS X is great for people who want to focus more on audio production and photo editing, but it's incredibly locked down, to do more advanced things (and even see the CPU model number) you need to be proficient with the UNIX terminal and it's absolute shit for gaming unless you Hackintosh it. Also, Windows versions of Photoshop, Premiere and whatnot are catching up in speed and efficiency to their Mac OS counterparts.

Apple supported PPC Macs for four years after they made the switch to Intel. Snow Leopard was the first version of OSX that wouldn't run on PPC Macs. That's a pretty long time to keep supporting an old, slow, architecture with brand new features and big updates.

I would use it if there were more applications supported. Especially games.

 

Literally the only reason I use Windows over Linux at this point is because of the widespread usage and compatibility.
