Study says teens who play video games do better at school

Quote

He analysed the academic results of more than 12,000 Australian 15-year-olds and compared it to their online habits which were also collected by PISA.

“Students who play online games almost every day score 15 points above the average in maths and 17 points above the average in science,” he said in a statement issued by the Melbourne university.

Prof Posso believes the problem solving aspect of gaming could help sharpen the cognitive abilities of students and provide them with a way to practice the skills they learned in the classroom.

Whilst every once in a while universities are releasing studies, this study has me interested, as there hasn't been a related study for maybe about 2 years. Australian university RMIT says that playing video games enhances cognitive abilities as long as the games themselves aren't violent, the professor has said that teachers should incorporate them into how they teach.

I at the moment do not really have an opinion, and this doesn't affect me much, but it would be interesting to see what might come out of this. Whilst the study says that using social media is a detriment to learning and might indicate that they are having trouble understanding the material and go on social media to socialise and ignore the more pressing issue. Now that might have an impact and we might see parents nagging teens to get off of facebook/twitter/etc and study.

EDIT:

Journal: http://ijoc.org/index.php/ijoc/article/view/5586/1742

I will attempt to get a copy of that study from the journal that it is being published in.

I'm in my last year of high school now, and honestly from what I've experienced so far is that doing good in school comes from motivation to do good. Played the same types of games up to now since the start and only just until last year I've started to care. Going from something like a 52 in maths to high 90's because I really want to get the awards and the advantages of universities and colleges.

played a lot back in HS, only studied in the 15 min bus trip in the morning, never repeated a class. Still feels good thinking about it even if my grades were average

That is generally true with the males in my graduating class. They were enjoyed playing video games.

What I'm wondering is how it goes... Is it really that if you play video games you do better in school or does it go if you do good in school generally you play more video games?

I personally have a feeling it could be the latter, but I could be wrong.

Unfortunately for me getting into a good university doesn't just rely on yourself it also means that your class also has to do well, it didn't matter if you did well. e.g I did very well at Information Processes Technology, with a raw mark of 89. When I got scaled, I was scaled down to 54(27). Max scaled mark is 100(50). Max raw mark is 100. And the only reason why I was scaled so poorly was because my classmates didn't care and they did horribly. Even though I did not study for this subject and I went in with no preparation. :)

So basically in Australia, it doesn't matter if you do well, your classmates need to do well in order for you to get a good scaled mark.

Here is the year scale report: http://www.uac.edu.au/documents/atar/2015-ScalingReport.pdf

EDIT: Mistake for scaled mark. In brackets is the mistake

What idiot thought that this was a good way to do things? I`m curious to what their reasoning was.

We've now got three different subjects going on, an Asian fox and motorbike fetish, two guys talking about Norway invasions and then some other people talking about body building... This thread is turning into a free for all fetish infested Norwegian circle jerk.

Of course , it's always in moderation . While games do improve some things , playing so much that it disrupts sleep or studying is never good .

I think this is just accidental, or poor, correlation.

I played video games in high schools, lots, and i did terribly until i decided to actually care about wanting to do well.

Video games didn't hold me back, mind you, but they were certainly not a factor at all in my later grades.

This. I spent all my time playing counter strike in HS and didn't do very well in school.

it depends on the games you play.

FPS games, racing games -> no, not much

MMO's, RPGs, RTS -> yes, will help.

In the end, it all has to do with how the game stimulates functions in your brain. Logical thinking, analytical skills, mathematics, history, navigation and social skills all can be gained from games. Just depends what kinda games you play.

I for some reason very few believe in it. Perhaps some developing programs and help in study, but not games that are mostly about fantasy and war.

During high school I played a lot of the classic and burning crusade WoW. At those times when I was playing the most, my GPA was the highest. Has soon has I started to be social and meeting girls my grades dropped.

Certainly it can improve some skills and all, cognitive, awareness, space, etc. no doubt, it did for me. I played ton of WoW back then pretty much entire free time with little sleep too. I still do, though even if I do long plays like before it won't disrupt me :) Some people ruin their lives, no control, yet some play for same long length and have no problems as such. It's not for everyone, to play much that is.
