Am I not an enthusiast if I don't overclock?

One person told me in a game chat that since I don't have expensive hardware and I don't overclock I'm not a PC enthusiast. I don't think this is a correct assessment of what it means to be an enthusiast. Yes there are things that are marketed with terms like "enthusiast", but I don't think it can be the qualification for the title of enthusiast. So I just had some thoughts racing around my head I wanted to dump somewhere:

 

I joined LTT community because I had used technology in the past, but this guy and his channel began opening up this new and interesting world to me and began showing me how all the stuff I use everyday actually works. When I became an enthusiast...

... I had no intention of going too deeply into the art of overclocking other than simply understanding how it works. I'm an efficiency freak and practicality seeker by heart and what I have been drawn to is looking at what products can give me the most performance for the smallest amount of energy. Overclocking by nature means trying to eek more performance out of a system by throwing more resources at it. It's like going really fast in a vehicle. The optimal miles per gallon is achieved at a speed ~40-50mph hence why I see so many 55mph speed limit signs. (I'm usually the one guy who religiously obeys them with a row of people behind me usually trying to go 60-70.) By going beyond that "base speed" it will cost more and more fuel to reach speeds as you accelerate. This is why instead of looking for things that go super fast. I try to look for newer chips that use newer processes. Before I learned about this stuff I had the CPU I use now which is made on a 22nm process. I go to CPUBoss.com because despite their dumb rating system (IMO), they list a lot of the benchmarks and specs of hardware like performance per dollar and performance per watt and I've learned that as the size of the transistors decreases they are able to become more efficient and cooler running.

 

The way I saw it AMD's 28nm chips gives them some really compelling low power, low cost options that even beat my current CPU at performance per watt like the Athlon X4 860K which features a bit less performance than my current CPU for a lot better price, but in the end I'm deciding to wait for AMD to bring their 14 nm ZEN CPUs to the table so I can compare and make an informed decision. to see where I can get the most efficient chip on these newer smaller 14nm processes for the best price. 

 

What do you guys think? Is my niche interest in technology hardware worthy of the title enthusiast? Maybe it's just one of those "I think I am enthusiast, therefore I am" sort of argument, in which case yes I am. IDK why I still feel the need for approval though when I don't.

that's why 8 year olds with 0 knowledge about sound call themselves audiophiles, and that's why most of the "audiophile" community is horrible

That's hilariously appropriate because I've been scolded by people claiming to be audiophiles for wanting budget equipment that "just gets the job done"

'enthusiast' is such a pretentious and subjective term anyways. If you like PC's to a certain point (set by yourself) you're an enthusiast. At this point when you have a certain point, you can judge other on how much 'enthusiast' they are.

It's such a dumb thing, just let others be. It's like those Pokémon fans who don't consider you a true fan, until you start competitive battling, doing IV breeding, EV training, etc...

 

Now that my rant is over, I don't think you have to be an overclocker to be an enthusiast. You don't even have to have a PC to be a tech enthusiast. Maybe you have a Mac because you care a lot more about a whole 'nother  side of tech. There is no real checklist to determine if you are an enthusiast, just a thought in your head. And his thought did not align with yours. Normally this is not a big deal, until someone decides to get mad about it

An enthusiast is someone who thinks about PCs all day long. It's not your hardware, it's not your settings, it's your passion. Best video I've ever seen that nails what it means to be an enthusiast.

In my opinion, anyone who is interested in computers above most other things is an enthusiast. 

 

It annoys me that the $1000+ CPU/GPUs are called enthusiast grade because it makes it sound like you have to have money to enjoy computers and it makes me feel a bit left out!

 

Being an enthusiast doesn't necessarily mean knowing everything about that subject because that's why the word "expert" exists.

I have to say that being an enthusiast goes a bit further than interest.  

 

As it applies to the OP, if you were activity modifying your setup in the continued pursuit of better efficiency much like an overclocker is modifying their setup in the pursuit of speed and power, than you are definitely an enthusiast.    

 

You aren't an enthusiast just because you buy more efficient parts to save power or more robust parts to overclock higher.  That just makes you frugal or someone with too much money and a lack of understanding.  I think the real difference is when you are continually and actively doing something to support whatever goal you favor.

I agree. The word "hobby" comes to mind when I think of enthusiast. If computer hardware isn't a hobby (or career) for someone, they are probably not a computer hardware enthusiast.

Seeing people make use and keeping old hardware relevant is really interesting, not because it's more efficient as I strive for, but because it's a testament to reliability, good upkeep and the simplicity of the design (if simplicity is a word one can apply to computers). 

 

I feel simplicity is very important. Kalashnikov said that all that is complex is unnecessary and what is simple is needed. He made a weapon platform so simple and reliable that it will be useful long after we've turned to dust. Steve Jobs also praised the idea of simplicity. I don't know if we're there quite yet with computers, but the basic format of computers hasn't changed in quite a while so who knows what the next advancement will be after we create the most efficient processors with the tiniest nanotechnologies.

1) Current PC's are fast enough to run most things @ stock speed so overclocking is not really required anymore. Back in the old days even the fast expensive pc's were too slow to run some stuff and overclocking really helped, i feel those days are somewhat gone now.

 

2) Not everyone wants to put in the time to check his system for stability after each OC. Lot's of overclockers THINK their box is stable, but really getting it stable takes lots of time.

 

3) Somewhat an extension of 2, not everyone has multiple PC's. Your game PC could also be your work/finance PC. Do you want to risk losing work data because of a unstable overclock?

 

Not that I'm against overclocking, but theres reasons not to, and it does not make you less of an enthusiast.

OC or Overclocking is "almost" ussless unless for 2 reasons... 

 

1. You don't have the money...

 

2. You more or less got the best hardware for reasonable cost. 

That is NOT reasonable.......

 

I don't like OC CPU's or Memory in any form. It's easyer to find the reason to OC a graphics card.... 

It adds heat and system problems if not done correctly.

PC enthusiasts derive enjoyment from PC hardware. Whether this includes overclocking or not is entirely up to you.

I recommend something a bit more CPU intensive than memTest.  It's great for testing memory within Windows and does stress the CPU a bit, but I would run a few other stability tests before calling an overclock stable.

 

I believe in shorter test with multiple stress types as opposed to long single tests (12+ hours).

but legit it seems like they just buy evey card that comes out even if their current card can hold up for 2+ years 

 

(every card as in from team red and/or team green so both or just the better nvidia card)

I assure you that you can overclock with complete stability.  I usually buy the fastest thing available and push it further.  No reason not to in my case.

It all depends on what you think an "enthusiast" is. For some just liking something is enough to be considered an enthusiast but for others it's you buy top end hardware and overclock it. personally I think if you're passionate about something then you're an enthusiast whether or not you have a 6950X.
