Nvidia GTX 1080 and 1070 DispayPort Imcompatible with HTC Vive

Last week, a friend of mine contacted me looking for help getting his Vive working. He was trying to hook the Vive up to a GTX 1080 using the optional Display Port on the HMD's link box because the HDMI port on his graphics card was being used to display to a TV. I knew for a fact that this configuration works with a GTX 980 Ti because I’ve tested it already. We were both disappointed to find out that it doesn’t work with the 10-series cards.

 

Whether or not Nvidia will remedy the issue with a driver fix remains to be seen, but so far, Nvidia has been quiet about the issue. There is an ongoing thread on the GeForce.com community forum, and several people have chimed in to report the same problem. So far, the only comment from Nvidia in the thread came from Manuel Guzman on June 9, who said: “We are still investigating this issue.” It is nearly a month later we still don’t have a follow-up. There’s a similar thread on Reddit from around the same time warning people of the issue.

This seems like a very serious issue considering the the fact that Pascal was marketed so heavily for VR.

If this isn't fixable with a driver update, I'm curious as to what Nvidia plans to do about the people that already bought their cards. They have been mysteriously silent about it though, Nvidia reps on the Geforce forums are typically forthcoming about driver issues that are being fixed.

I'm confused, why was this not mentioned already? Or am I just oblivious to VR issues since I have no intention of buying it. Granted you can still use HDMI, so at least it can work with the Vibe, but still I'm surprised this hasn't come up on the forum already.

It's likely fixable with drivers if the Display ports function fine with a TV, unless the vibe has some weird hardware quirk, it's just weird that this is the first we've heard of this.

Yup but such as the guy mentioned in the article, he uses HDMI for his TV or monitor leaving the 3 DP for everything else. Granted he could buy an adapter but it's not his fault that his GPU doesn't work with the DP option of the Vive.

maybe the Vive uses HDMI AUX channel for something special, but not sure.

I'm not surprised. Nvidia can keep its problems very quiet. Like the high idle speeds in 144hz monitors. The problem actually existed even before maxwell was launched. 

 

Seeing how its only been a month ehh. It'll take some time. But I'm pretty sure this issue will get fixed seeing how nvidia marketed VR quite heavily. 

 

Some of nvidia driver issue existed for years  A month is not really that long.

I'm not saying it's his fault, I'm just saying it would be a lot worse for nvidia if it didn't work at all with the vibe, 3.5 gate would be replaced with vr gate if that were the case.

Why can't they just plug directly to hdmi, and use a adapter for the monitor. Some people are so dumb, they fail to try other methods.

While that's an option there should be no reason you can't use DisplayPort for the VIVE. Speaking of, why the hell doesn't it work?

Why it does not work is one thing, but when you want to play vr is another. So that person can do a work around or just return his vive.

still it's something which needs to be fixed.

 

Theoretically I suppose it could be either nvidia or HTC which is violating some part of the display port spec right and causing the incompatibility. People need to check with HTC as well.

No, you should not have to do a workaround or return the product. There should be no issues with a DisplayPort capable product not working with a graphics card where each is supposed to support the other.

The Worst case scenario is that its hooked up HDMI 2.0 4k 60hz which display-port to HDMI adapters are sketchy with only one is known to do this well and even then there is some small problems here and there depending on the exact setup and settings. Though this is not as likely but for a 1000x series card its not far fetched.  Though overall i agree with you just playing devils advocate if someone is paying 6-700 for a Graphics card 800 for a Vive plus the High end other computer parts and then has a 4k TV hooked up as well buying a $30-40 dollar adapter is not the end of the world and if its not 4k tv the adapters are cheap as anything and the problems is very minuscule

Well DP 1.4 would be the only way to get more than 60 FPS on 2x 2560x1440, and I'm guessing that if you bought a 1080 you will not be happy with 60 FPS.

Hes saying hook the Monitor up to the Displayport  so this wouldnt be a problem and Vive to HDMI since the Displayport to vive isnt working. and these cards HDMI is capable of more then 60FPS at 1440 i believe since they do 4k 60hz also

Yeah either the Vive has some problems or it is very picky. It has problems on hasewell CPUs, like a 4670K. It also has problems with USB 3.0 bandwidth as if it gets to high 3.0 starts broadcasting creating interference and that cable is just one long antenna

We are aware of user reports of an incompatibility when plugging HTC Vive into GeForce GTX 1080 using the DisplayPort connector. HTC and NVIDIA are investigating the issue. In the interim, we recommend users connect HTC Vive to the HDMI port on GeForce GTX 1080
