Microsoft's back again with the Upgrade to Windows 10 message they've been annoying PC users about for the past year.

Microsoft just released yet another Win10 upgrade nag system, disguised as a "Recommended" patch for Windows 7 SP1 and Windows 8.1 systems.

According to the KB 3173040 article, if you have Windows set to automatically install updates, and have the Windows Update "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them" box checked, your machine will suddenly sprout a full-screen purple message that says:

Sorry to interrupt, but this is important.

Windows 10 free upgrade offer ends July 29.

Microsoft recommends upgrading to Windows 10 -- the most secure Windows ever built. The upgrade is free and you can easily roll-back to your current operating system within 31 days if you decide Windows 10 is not right for you. We'll check for compatibility before starting the upgrade. Over 300 million people have upgraded. Upgrade your PC before the offer ends!

Windows 7 and 8.1 customers are offered four choices:

  • Upgrade now
  • Remind me later
  • Notify me three more times
  • Do not notify me again

All of our nightmares have become a true. A FULL SCREEN pop up of the Upgrade to Windows 10 message. But hey, at least there's a "Do not notify me again" button (let's hope that actually works :P)

Well, unlike the old version one, you have clear options to not upgrade, and not be notified anymore.

I bet you $500 if you accidentally click "upgrade now" you can't cancel.

Is that "Upgrade now" button pre-selected as soon as the pop-up comes up?

That's bull! Example. I'm playing a game and/or typing something and the pop-up comes up as I was about to press "Enter"... Boom, upgrade has started... WHAT?&

I know they are trying to get to a point where they don't have to provide support for three or four versions of Windows, but their constant nagging approach to upgrading isn't doing their reputation any good. But then again since Macs are so expensive, and few have even heard of Linux, let alone used it, I guess it doesn't matter how many people they piss off.

Also for less tech-comfortable people, it a pretty douche bag move to pretty much force them into upgrading when they may have only just, somewhat, got the hang of Windows 7. I'm sure I'm not the only one on here to have received a panicked phone call from a parent or grandparent when Win 10 started installing itself, followed by lots of follow up calls about how do I do X?

No way this bullshit stops July 29th. They'll say they're extending the free upgrade another 90 days and the nags will probably get worse.

they won't stop ever, because they want to stop supporting 7 and 8.1 and get everyone on 10 /

Doesn't chancge the fact that no matter what colour or screen resolution that you actually have to look for the optoins that limit and cancel the notification and are difficult to see. Its the exact same for the settings during Windows 10's installation that turn off the telementary (including the keylogger that was supposed to be completely removed from the post technical preview Windows 10). As it stands if anyone in the family wants to upgrade to Windows 10 (anyone), they ask me to do it for them (and to test the updates-glad I've got a laptop that only works with Windows 10 to test updates as a few did cause issues).

Getting people on Windows 10 won't change the support Microsoft has to provide for Windows 7/8. Support for those OSes is guaranteed until 2020 / 2023, and nothing will change that. MS wants to get people on to Windows 10 because of all the integrated MS services (Windows store, Groove Music), in-OS ads, telemetry and data-collection, etc, which MS makes money off of any time a person uses. It's a much more selfish and customer-disregarding reason than because it's easier for MS to support one OS instead of 3... when MS will be supporting the same 3 for the same time whether people move to Win10 or not.

There is nothing to complain about as this is how Windows 8/10 is. So, if you have no problem with either OS, it isn't a problem.

Well, it's reasonable in a way. Why not claim free upgrade while it lasts? Makes no sense.  And people can click to be notified later and all.

Yes I agree. So while it could be considered more "intrusive," it's easier to just tell them you don't want to be notified anymore.

I saw this for the firs time on Friday at work (i work at a repair shop) and I was like "oh this is so much easier than that stupid popup". it's actually very quick to disclose this message and have to never see it again.

Turns out its not that dark since dem robots are filled with lights, i waved hi to the Russians on the space station, turns out all those stories about space finding humans instead of the other way around is true(soviet Russia joke). They threw me some Heineken beer and I've been sitting staring at the people of this forum and earth since.

If they're using Window 8 maybe.  But 7 was the best thing since XP as far as I'm concerned.

How do you use the laptop to test upgrades to Windows 10?
