2 guys set an impressive Tesla record (450 Miles) and caught Elon Musk's attention for it

Two Tesla owners claim to have set a new record for the longest distance drive on a single charge in a Tesla Model S P85D.
The car has an EPA-certified rating of 253 miles per charge, but the two Tesla owners claim they drove 452.8 miles at a speed of 24.2 miles per hour.
 
The two men took turns driving in shifts of several hours. Total drive time was 18 hours and 40 minutes. The start and stop point was Rodekro, Denmark.
 
Hypermiling, which is the practice of driving to improve the car's efficiency, is a common hobby among Tesla owners.
 
While this isn't exactly an official world record for hypermiling, Tesla CEO Elon Musk seems to approve. Musk retweeted a video posted by Bjørn Nyland, who was one of the drivers, early Tuesday morning.

That seems...stupid.

I mean, sure, it's cool the battery lasted that long. But if you're going that fast, do you know what else you could have done?
Ridden a bike.

They also cost over $100,000 less, and take 0 electricity. No recharge times. Honestly, at times you'd probably even go faster than this Tesla.

they also calculated 38 mph might have been a better choice to go farther

the fact is tesla says 250 miles on the site.

when it can go up to 450.

so at the right speeds where you live,

If only they had Lipo batteries in Teslas they would last way longer and be more powerful

But the point is that its showing how far a tesla can go in one good charge. It seems to me you can go rather far with this car compared to other gas powered cars. However seeing that there is a set limit on speed makes me wonder about 60,80, 40 MPH and etc.

Yeah but I'd bet the cars onboard computer read 0 miles left. Or perhaps it didn't. Either way, having to reduce your speed that much essentially makes it useless.

If they'd gone faster, the battery wouldn't have lasted as long.

Fair analogy, but irrelevant.  This could be more analogous to a Tool-assisted speedrun or another world record:  not to demonstrate regular scenarios, but rather for bragging rights and also to demonstrate being pushed to the absolute limit.

How is this any different from using LN2 to overclock to insane GHz's? OF COURSE it's not practical. No one runs a cpu at 8ghz with LN2 for everyday use. It's just cool to know how far you can push certain things to the limit and of course, bragging rights.

Things like this could be used to transport cargo that isn't time dependent eventually. The amount of fuel consumption that could be reduced for lorries, must be huge.

EV's are only free to charge right now because of the number of people not driving them. If/when they overtake gasoline/diesel powered cars, you can be damn well guaranteed that they will cost something to charge.

when it can go up to 450.

so at the right speeds where you live,

 

this really doesn't mean anything... the reason is says 250 is cause thats the range for how normal people drive.  if you drive 25 mph then a tesla's a waste, just get a scooter...  

 

also, thats 450 miles with minimal stops.  most of your energy (gas or electric or anything else) gets used up accelerating

If only they had Lipo batteries in Teslas they would last way longer and be more powerful

 

Oh god, all I can think of is the first time me and my friends played around with a Lipo battery in our RC cars and the large scale mayhem that would result in a full sized car.
