The South Korean government has required that teenagers install a spy app on their smartphones

jos

the government has ruled that people under 19 who buy a smartphone must install an app that monitors their web activity.
Parents will be able to to see what their kids are up to online and block access to "undesirable" sites.
Failure to install such an app means the phone won't work.
The government has developed its own monitoring app called Smart Sheriff, but there more than a dozen alternatives on the market.
Phone stores now have posters at the entrance saying: "Young smartphone users, you must install apps that block harmful content."
Some of the apps monitor particular words and phrases, then alert parents when these triggers are put into search engines.

Examples include "threat", "run away from home", "pregnancy", and "crazy". There are many, many more

But surely the internet is full of good and bad things alike? If we accept state-prescribed parental control over young people's existence online, why wouldn't we also demand full 24-hour CCTV monitoring of their offline existence too?

Didn't read the source but does it say anything about the consequences of not installing the app?

wow thats odd and really disturbing but i get why it exists and is a thing

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

I can see many many many problems with this. What if the app requires Android? Then I'll just buy Windows Phone. What if I don't have space on my phone? How is it monitoring, where is it sending the data? This is increasing the bandwidth usage? What if you root and then probably can evade it? Or if you disallow the app to autostart on your phone?

What are the consequences to misusing or not using the app?

How would that? I could flash CM on it, that surely will work unless they changed the hardware to detect the software?

If you think about it can enforce some serious education.

All the porn and weird shit i searched before 19 pffft, if i were in SK they would throw me in one of those facilities where they zap your brain with electrodes, pretending it fixes internet addiction in SK teenagers.

Luckly i dont live in such a country, or i would be seriously tortured for all the shit i ever searched lmao.

There will be two kinds of people: those who don't know any better, and those who will flash a custom rom to their phone as soon as they get it.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

So it's legally required? How? I'm fairly sure this infringes on at least some human rights... And how is this going to be inforced for All the kids in SK? Seems kinda like the fiasco with the UK schools reporting kids who play cod to the police... But they might actually do it. :(

Just because something infringes human rights doesn't mean it won't be enforced. Human rights is something the people need to constantly fight and enforce, it isn't something governments are obligated to follow on their own. And as they said above, the phones won't work if they don't get the app.

"Normandy" i7 4790K - GTX 970 - Phantom 410 (Gun metal) - Z97 Extreme4 (asrock) - 128GB Crucial SSD - 1TB WD HDD - H60 Refurb. - 7 case fans | G710+ Keyboard, G230 Headset, Acer GN246HL Monitor.

Quick thoughts on system: I7 is extremely quick and I'm glad I spent the extra for hyper-threading. I regret my decision to get the GTX 970, it has horrible coil whine. There isn't any excuse for this terrible whine I and others are having. I HIGHLY recommend a 144hz monitor. Future Improvements/upgrades: Rubber fan mounts, basic speakers, more ram (for a total of 16gb), replace GPU.

144hz is love. 144hz is life. I like to submit unfinished posts then do about 20 edits. I like the Night Theme too.

But I'm sure you could root it or get "red herring" software.

The only solution to beat the system is to turn it off. Turn off your PC, turn off your phone. Ride a bike, wear a mask and pay cash. That's the only way to beat the system. But the system probably suspects that.

maintaining all-inclusive domestic surveillance in a country with one of the most telecom traffic is expensive as well, they are still doing it.
