Build 02 - Silent Server 3000

Jaybird

Silent Server 3000

I've had the idea in my head for sometime now and I finally have the financial resources to build a server. Given, I am not looking to build something over the top but at the same time not something that is run of the mill. So here we go. It began when I found out Microcenter was having a deal: buy an i5 4670k and an msi Z87-G41 for $219. I had the mobo, cpu, and memory sitting in a drawer for a while because Microcenter was taking forever to update their stock on a particular case I wanted. Now its here, I can finally build this server.

Specs:

  • Motherboard: MSI - Z87-G41
  • CPU: Intel i5 - 4670K
  • Memory: Crucial Balistix -  2x4GB -  1600Mhz
  • Storage: 2x Samsung 840 EVO - 120GB
  • PSU: Corsair -  RM550
  • Case: Fractal Design - Arc Midi R2
  • Cooler: Stock Intel (for now)
  • Fans: 3x Fractal Design - Silent Series R2 - 140mm
  • No peripherals

Future parts:

  • Cooling: H320 (I'll make it fit)
  • Storage: 8x WD Red 1 TB
  • Raid Card: something goes here
  • Fans: Corsair SP - lots, maybe 2x LED for front

Im going to figure out how to shove an H320 in it. It will fit but it looks like moding will be involved. the lady at the microcenter checking me out asked if I wanted to buy the 2 year insurance. to which i said, "naw, I am probably going to be drilling a few holes in it soon."

As of right now it is quieter than my prodigy.

I don't think you need to at all, if you use 25mm wide fans it should be fine

The keyword is "should be". I cant be for certain because I dont have a measuring tool.

I don't understand why people use desktop components in a server build. Looks nice though.

I think he is referring to the i5-4670K in particular.

BLAH I got it cheap. it was a good deal!

That and the use of a desktop motherboard as opposed to a server motherboard. They're more reliable and the capacitors usually last longer (that's one of the first things to go on a computer especially if they're left on 24/7).

Meh just preference difference. Just a hassle to go through that process. A server motherboard also has some unique advantages like getting rid of unnecessary resources, virtualization, Intel NIC's, etc. Just depends on what you're planning on using the server for. Anyway, I didn't come here to bash your build man. I think it looks great.

You can't really argue with that.

Something you should consider, or at least I did with my NAS is, how much CPU power do you need? For my NAS a CPU like yours would be way overkill, what I was looking for was a CPU with a low TDP and not many horsepower.

NAS build log: Gimli, a NAS build by Shaqalac.

Mechanical keyboards: Ducky Mini YotH - Ducky Mini

true, but if I wanted to run a game server on it I can. Its intent is to be a multipurpose machine

Is there a special reason you went with 8x1TB instead of (for example)  4x 3TB? The latter would be cheaper and give you more storage :)

nope, just a filler for the idea. It very much will likely change when I get further down the road.

Very nice

Thanks fish!

You could pick up something like an HE02 or NH-D14. As long as you don't overclock you could run the CPU fanlessly.

I do appreciate the suggestion but I am shopping right now for liquid cooling. I am going to try and shove a triple radiator in the top of the case. the only problem I am looking at is the clearance between the ceiling of the case and the top of the mobo.  It looks like Ill be able to fit a 30mm rad with fans in pull config. so when I get a measuring tool later today, Ill be able to see how much clearance I have to work with. then its deciding if I want it for 120mm fans or 140mm fans. I should be able to just get by with out modding the case .
