Edward Snowden hails Apple as 'pioneering' for iOS 8 security measures

Whistleblower and former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden lauded Apple for enabling measures like default full-disk encryption in iOS 8, in a rare editorial published on Friday.

 

 

Hard to disagree with him on this one. Apple basically rams encryption into every phone and if we truly believe what Apple says about not having decryption keys, they can't even access what your backups contain. Even disabling activation lock requires some serious proof before Apple even considers breaking that, their actions lately certainly go a long ways in letting people know they give a damn about privacy more than other companies. 

 

I wish all manufacturers took this route and enabled encryption by default. Let the government cry about not having access to your information, Apple certainly didn't give a damn about that. 

 

"Basic technical safeguards such as encryption — once considered esoteric and unnecessary — are now enabled by default in the products of pioneering companies like Apple, ensuring that even if your phone is stolen, your private life remains private," Snowden said.

Apple has come under fire from various U.S. government officials for iOS 8's security. The most infamous example may be Deputy Attorney General James Cole, who in October 2014 claimed that Apple was marketing to criminals, and that its technology would one day lead to the death of a child, since police would not be able to extract needed iPhone data.

 

iOS 8 not only encrypts iPhone and iPad data by default, but gives Apple no access to encryption keys, meaning that the company can't help produce someone's data even when served with a warrant or pressured by intelligence agencies.

 

Although it's unclear to what extent the CIA and NSA may have broken through iOS 8, past versions of iOS have been vulnerable to spying tools.

Apple's security is pretty great - iOS has iCloud Activation Lock, neither Apple nor the vendor sees your info when using Apple Pay, and Macs have really good security built-in without needing AV software. Though nothing is impenetrable, Apple's gear is always on the low end of the security risk spectrum. Hell, not even the phone can see your Touch ID fingerprint data (it's kept entirely on the 'secure element,') and device backups and Facetime calls aren't accessible by Apple or anyone else - even if the government asked Apple for info, they wouldn't have any to give.

I just wish my trust hadn't been ruined by other organisations stabbing every fucker in that back and creating back doors in their encryption protocols for the government; if Apple are forcing full-disk encryption, not sure how the no decryption key would work but if that's true, then on this occasion Apple are indeed the pioneers of modern day device security and privacy.

An error in how a notification handles unicode text has nothing to do with device encryption and security... 

I understand that but being able to turn my phone off could be considered a security breach. If you remote shutdown another PC it is considered hacking. Also theoretically they could send you something that waits for your phone to be restarted and installs. Probably not possible but could happen. Also why have they done nothing about it? Some phones get bricked from it.

Encryption hopefully becomes more and more prominent as time goes on, I've been rocking cyanogenmod on android for a while, certaintly better than stock android in terms of privacy/security but not good enough yet. It's more down to google to encorporate it into more of their apps.

An error in how a notification handles unicode text has nothing to do with device encryption and security... 

Denial of service is an attribute of security, but Apple is certainly doing a lot of good.

I understand that but being able to turn my phone off could be considered a security breach. If you remote shutdown another PC it is considered hacking. Also theoretically they could send you something that waits for your phone to be restarted and installs. Probably not possible but could happen. Also why have they done nothing about it? Some phones get bricked from it.

Also, it can make your phone useless. Remember that some people have unlimited text plans and if they don't texts msgs don't cost that much, you could easily spam it. It is a huge deal. But hey, Skype has a similar bug that's even worse. You have to delete the message and reinstall Skype.

But overall, iOS is very secure, props to Apple on that. I guess privacy costs, but can't really complain.

Don't know how MS is holding out, but WP is rather secure from my own experience with it. :)

Apple's security is pretty great - iOS has iCloud Activation Lock, neither Apple nor the vendor sees your info when using Apple Pay, and Macs have really good security built-in without needing AV software. Though nothing is impenetrable, Apple's gear is always on the low end of the security risk spectrum.

 

It's more the multi-layered architecture of the Mac operating system which makes it as resilience to malware as it is, rather then having built-in security; which does create good security i guess...

This contrasts a little with the inclusion of biometric "security" ^^ that said I agree, encription should at least be an option without needing third party software.

Well once in a while when something gets through (think Flashback), Apple is always quick to patch it - Macs have Gatekeeper, which is a form of AV. Though you're right as well.

The software isn't libre (open-source), so I can't see what's going on with it. If I can't read the source code, then I treat it as insecure/backdoored automatically.

security is something that apple does very well. my note 4 is encrypted but i wished it was by default to protect the people who dont know what encryption is

Whether you agree with him or not I sometimes wonder whether the funds he needs to stay alive don't come from corporate sponsorship?  If so then well done to Apple for supporting someone who could be considered a PR risk, if not well done to apple for getting noticed by someone who has bigger issues at the moment.

Microsoft and Google also have full-disk encryption, but with Windows 8 it's not enabled by default and only a few Android tablets have full-disk encryption enabled. So do their competitors have it too? Yes, but it's not enabled by default on most devices.

Why have it and not have it enabled? It's like OS X shipping with firewall disabled, it's so mind boggling.

I don't know? They're probably leaving it up to the user to enable it, but they don't advertise that "Oh yeah we have full-disk encryption!" I don't even see the option on my desktop, probably because of my multitude of storage devices.
