Steam users now have to spend $5 worth in purchases before they can add friends

They can just use skype or something. 

The fewer messaging systems I have to use the better. And Steam is the best one for quick communications in my opinion so often I'll ask people to add me on steam. The entire friends being free system was also beneficial to valve as it encouraged console plebs to take the dive into pc gaming once they had some friends drag them into steam. Now Valve lost that power... Really hope we can get Gaben to change this.

If I read that right it just the new user won't be able to invite

you still can invite them to become your friends.

 

it's to prevent new user to add random user.

You can still add them yourself, just ask for a link to their Steam profile and send an invite.

i noticed this earlier i've been put on as a limited account and i have spent way to much money on steam wtf steam why am i being forced to spend more....i mean i will but just not now.

I also like that move, I have seen quite a few bots latelty, really annoying!

The files are usually disguised .scr files.

Say what you will about this, but they are actually taking a stride to really protect their users from phishing bots. Yeah, $5 seems a bit steep to remove these restrictions upon new accounts, but it's Steam. It's easy to meet that quota. Again, hopefully this helps protect us from phishing bots, which are a huge problem on Steam now.

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it. 

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff. 

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

How is it misleading? The minimum amount of money you have to spend to get complete access to Steam has been raised from something like 20 cents to $5.

This is nothing new. The old requirement was that you had to purchase at least one game, regardless of price, and that had been in place for as long as I can remember. And in all honestly, who uses steam and doesn't own ONE game?

I hate bots adding me everyday though.

 

Maybe make it so I have to add them first?

Weird, I haven't spent a penny on Steam and I can still add friends, is this only for new users?

I'll double check later just to make sure that I still can add friends.

You have always had to purchase something from Steam before you could add friends and $5 is a very reasonable amount. There are very few items on Steam cheaper than that (excluding sales of course, but who buys one thing at a Steam sale).

I didn't even know there are phishing bots, i have never ever seen one of them!

It's not like i'm not active on steam, i'm quite a lot online on it.
