Hackers can now take out planes...

SIGSEGV

Sauce: http://www.inkthat.info/hacks/mile-high-hacking/

This has to be fixed pronto, and it's going to be hard to go round and fix every single plane... It's so simple there's a tool in Kali to do it. What are we actually going to do if someone ends up doing this while on a plane that hasn't been patched yet? It could kill alot of people.

“Quite simply put, we can theorize on how to turn the engines off at 35,000 feet and not have any of those damn flashing lights go off in the cockpit.”

With nothing more than an Android phone running open source penetration testing platform software from the Kali Linux NetHunter Project – The New Kali Linux NetHunter Tool can convert Your Android Nexus Device into Hacking Weapons.

I just had an idea: wouldn't it be a good idea to get a copy of Kali on your phone so, in case someone did decide to exploit this on a plane and say turn off the engines, you could do the same, except turn the engines back on and undo whatever the hacker did.

I would think it takes a substantial period of time to get them back up and running, a period of time during which you are in freefall.

jeez we just need to start having everything. Isolated from each other and now we need some firewalls for airplanes......

Well you're trusting your life to a hunk of metal riding explosions through the sky all controlled by a mindless slave (a computer) that does whatever it's told to do. Not really surprising that anybody could turn the engines off

Airplanes are pretty good at gliding. Also they usually don't take that long to start up. Any passenger plane should be able to survive if the engines would be turned off for a few minutes.

Yup but you would need to immediately start looking for a landing area, you cant glide forever.

The quote says "we could theorize" about turning engines off while the aircraft is cruising. That doesn't mean they can.

I'm not trying to downplay the severity of something like this, and the implications are scary, but generally these communities of grey/white/black hat hackers like to exaggerate the dangers of technologies like this. I don't think there is anything to worry about here.

And people tell me I'm crazy when I say I'd rather take a passenger cabin on a cargo ship than fly.

Well, maybe. It means "we think its possible, but have no way of testing it". Obviously they don't want to test it (unless someone is really nuts), but it still doesn't validate it in any way.

Couldn't they just test it on the ground? The brakes on those planes can hold the plane at a dead stop when at full power.

Why would a hacker, inside a plane, want to crash that plane? I'd still fly.

There is a fix that isn't exactly simple but  it goes like this. The pilots need to learn how to fly a plane and the planes need to go back to just hydraulic and analogue systems and problem averted

Why would a co-pilot, inside a plane, lock the pilot out and crash straight into the alps? Some people want to kill others, just to kill.
