[Softpedia]Microsoft, Google, Others Threaten to Sue Adblock Plus Creator

WolfDeville

As a result of the growing appetite for ad blockers, French publishers, including Microsoft, Google, and local online newspapers, are threatening to sue companies developing such applications, hoping that such a decision would lead to fewer users deploying such solutions.

The online version of French newspaper L'Equipe, which is one of the companies that could file a legal complaint against ad-blocking app developers, decided to restrict access to its website for users who are running such programs on their computers.

Good for them. He allows users to practically pirate google products. If you don't watch the ads, then you didn't pay.

All they can do is prevent people from going into their websites if they are using adblock, though personally if i go into a website like that, i'll leave the site.

I don't see what legal standing they have

It's not really unfair competition as they aren't in the market

I think they'd have a very hard time arguing unfair competition, and will only win by bullying small developers and threatening them with expensive legal battles.

It's very very poor taste, and very bad for consumer relations.

Well one is that we wouldn't be blocking ad's if they weren't so bloody annoying, like ones that follow you when you scroll around and shit.  Others which are hidden and in order to read the content you have to click on the page then get sent to an ad then go back and read whatever you were reading. Also many ad's don't cater to many people like I don't give a flying pie that some new tv show is coming out, either have ad's that are similar to what I do, like gaming and pc's like if there was an ad for like catalyst omega I would be interested in that or a new steam sale etc.

NEVER GIVE UP. NEVER STOP LEARNING. DONT LET THE PAST HURT YOU. YOU CAN DOOOOO IT

you are not editing the content provided with tivo, you are just make a cache and then changing playback speed.

Exactly, the problem with ads is the same problem cinemas had.

Cinema's (at least in the UK) couldn't compete with movies or netflix for price, so they now compete on experience, by having bigger seats and easier ticket bookings, in addition to having movies first

Adverts need to be the same. I wouldn't use adblock if adverts weren't so goddam annoying all the time. I miss out on un-annoying advert implementations because I don't want to deal with a bad one

then I could not buy a newspaper and cut out the ads/throw away the classifieds? You are not going to win this argument.

Until there are not regulations on websites regarding advertisement, this will keep happening. But hey, some countries have more ad signs than trees on their cities, would you expect their politicians to start controlling ads on the Internet?

Newspaper is physical media. The ads are paid for to be on the newspaper to get your attention. It's totally up to you what to do with it since you now own the product, it being physically in your hand.

Online viewed content like YouTube videos have a paid for ad that plays before your actual video plays. This helps generate revenue for YouTube and the video creator. Adblock removes the ad, generating no revenue.

I don't see how this is that hard to understand, or why you would not want someone to get paid for their work. Would you work for free? Don't think so.

So you're throwing Ghostery and Noscript users under the bus with that too? They block ads but that's because most ads are fucking malicious, not because they're annoying. Are you going to throw me under the bus because I don't want some shady corporation following my activity on the Internet so they can show me "more relevant ads"?

You want to stop ad blockers? Stop giving them a reason to block ads.

Those audio ads and video ads that hog the entirity of my limited bandwidth? Yea, those need to go. I don't support those.

if you have to insist you think for yourself, i'm not going to believe you.

It's wrong because the person who made the content relies on that ad for payment. If the ad don't play, they don't get paid for your view.

Put yourself in their shoes. If you're busting your ass making some content and some people think that they would rather view your content for free rather than watching a really short ad, wouldn't you be disappointed?

Edit: on mobile. Typos were had.
