that reminds me about the starting days of the this forum...many members are not native english speakers / writers ^^...the hard to read questions and answers were flowing through, but nobody made a fuzz about it ^^

II still preferred the starting days of the forum because there much more quality posts and much less memes, console bashing, and more importantly there much much more quality posts

don't agree or disagree with OP, but there is one more thing I'd like to add. Especially on threads that are only a few pages long, please read through the follow-up posts of the OP to see if the question has been resolved or new questions arose from that. Not to advertise but there is a great plug-in from @colonel_mortis

Of course this only applies to question threads.

I think it also has to do on which sub forum you post on. I always get quick precise answers that educate me in the Water Cooling section. But some questions need other sub forums that have a less "informed" crowd.

Also the people with 1000 post but only 100 likes really bother me.

Your making me feel bad man because I have a really low like to post ratio. truthfully I have a feeling that most of my like come from my dealings in the off topic subforum and anime club.

The issue isn't about not getting your question answered, it's about the irrelevant posts.

Basically it's this: is it helpful? Will OP say "No shit sherlock." or "Thanks for your help?"

The only reason why some people have 1000 posts and 100 likes is because most of their posts are useless. No one gives you a like if you don't answer the question.

ignore the irrelevant posts?

If its something that can be asked and answered that quickly its probably not deserving of a thread.

Thats so not true, not true at all. *cries in the corner*

if someone asks a stupid (unreasonably stupid) question I give stupid answers. if someone makes a lazy post, I give a lazy response. If I get a solid OP with relevant information then I give a quality answer. If I get an OP with barely any information I sometimes won't even bother replying or ask a question to help other people help OP and then leave. If it's a LMGTFY type question I either don't respond or post a google search link with a small explanation.

In the few threads I've made, I've gotten pretty meaningful responses, and I don't make simple l2google type threads because I only ask a question if I seriously can't figure it out myself. I usually include relevant information and spend a lot of time making a detailed and concise post.

A lot of people don't do that, this isn't the fault of the responders alone.

I know you know that thread was lowly lmgtfy fodder

basically the same that I do for the most part but a good majority of questions are thing that have already been answered quite throughly.

I swear though its hard to get answers for things on here for things that I dont know and cdont know someone who does.

i wil also agree that much of it has to do with what questions are being asked and how they are being asked.

Well, why would they bother wasting their time giving a stupid useless answer?

cause.

Post whoring is a pretty big one. Don't see why, since it's just a number on an online forum. Not like post count will win you a good career or get you bitches.

if only.

It's really not. If you read http://news.ycombinator.com for a while you will see it's not the case. There are PLENTY (dare I say tons?) of techies and programmers and hackers that use Macs and Linux. They all hate Windows for the most part too. I'm not saying we need to go that far but some acceptance would be nice.

now your confusing me.

My issue was I made a thread titled " OMG AMD vs Intel which is better bra" and like everyone said bro Intel like duh!!! Then I said well how should I know because this is the first thread like this ever.........then this other guy came in and BOOM spammed links to graphs that said 8350 Zerg!!! Then another guy posted BOOM...and said bro AMD bottleneck at 720p bra. Then they called each other fanboyz for 4 pages. Best thread EVA!! Then the very next day someone posted "AMD vs Intel bra" and it happened all over again.

Come to think of it.....it happens everyday......

You shouldnt have made that thread and threads like that should be banned. if anything there should be one big one that it stickied so people have a place to bitch.

And let's not forget about those guys:

- I want a super quality headphone. Price is not an issue, I have unlimited budget, so just suggest the best you can.

- How much is 'unlimited budget' ?

- About $150

It's a forum, threads sometimes don't get a response, or end up being derailed. You ain't paying us for help, it's a community which will give when people are able and willing to give information, some even seek it out for you because some are too lazy to use google, or just want a 2nd/3rd/4th opinion.

afc.gif

Also, you need to factor in time zones, and the fact people have jobs etc. You won't always have someone on hand to help you with everything. You only posted the other thread asking for help, 30 mins before you made this one.

Thanks to your post, you are one of the examples.

Especially the GIF, was that really necessary?

Yes, the post would not have been half as fitting the situation as it was if it lacked the GIF.

And yes, it's a forum. If you're not happy with the answers, google yourself =P

There's also the people that have a question so specific and out there that you need to hunt down a specialist for that specific thing to answer it.

Thats what most of my questions usually end up being. But youd think on a forum like this there would be at least one if not a couple specialists for everything. i think do to the demographic we dont have much if any of that sort of thing though.

II still preferred the starting days of the forum because there much more quality posts and much less memes, console bashing, and more importantly there much much more quality posts

the quality posts are still there you just have to look to find them. Also depending on the topic if its already been covered why cover it again? This is why I think this forum needs a wiki as well as a bunch aof relevant stickied posts.

I don't see anything wrong with someone asking for help without Googling it first. The answers they find may only solve half their problems, or they may Google something, and end up trying something that makes it worse, and/or wastes their time, and if they ultimately end up here after said event, it makes it harder for those that want to help.

You're not obligated to help anyone here. If it bothers you that much, simply stay away from the troubleshooting topics.

Because people are infatuated with a few things on this forum:

1. Having Linus say their name on the WAN Show

2. Getting mad likes on their posts by saying crap that might not even apply

3. Circle jerking levels of circle jerking in getting agreement for biased arguments that solve nothing but derailing threads.

I've gotten my share of WAN show mentions. I've whored my likes. I'm pretty well know. I also don't give a shit. I get my validation from real life, by interacting with real people. I don't need to glorify myself here.

I'm here because I like tech, I like interesting new things, I like being able to help others, and I like a good discussion.

That shit is exceedingly rare in this community.

There's some good discussions, its just having to ignore or post over the BS which many end up just not posting, if we continue to post over the BS the good stuff will get through.

I roll with sigs off so I have no idea what you're advertising.

Does any of this make me a bad person? No. However, those who chose to attack others for their platform of choice are. they are the scum of the tech world, and I will call you out for it. Microsoft has pushed Apple, just as Apple has pushed Microsoft, you and I are the ones who benefit from that, keep that in mind. We wouldn't be where we are today without the two big front runners in home computing going at it head-to-head. I don't think anyone can deny that if the smartphone world were left to Palm or blackberry, I.E. if Apple hadn't come in with the iPhone, the mobile phone world would not be where it is today.

So we basically agree then. I don't hate Windows that much, I do still use it every day. I think that Mac OS was not that good pre-OS X, but now it's basically Unix with a beautiful, well designed user interface. I've been a Unix user for my entire computing career, in my field the question is not Mac or Windows but what flavor of Unix you use. As such I may have grown to unduly dislike Windows, because over the years my Windows installations have been notoriously unstable whereas my Unix ones have always been rock solid. Windows 8/.1 was quite a shock as well, because it was change for change's sake. They didn't fix any of the nagging issues in the UI, instead they overhauled it when it didn't need to be.

I've given Windows several chances. I was very excited about the rumored project Longhorn back in the day, (later Vista) but after they had to restart from scratch what was it, three times? And then the end result actually sucked in the worst ways possible. After that I became completely disillusioned. I realized the whole time I had been a rabid Windows fanboy, Apple was quietly killing it with OS X. It was like a perfect combination about what makes Linux great, (rock solid reliability through open source peer reviewed development) and Windows great, (carefully designed [somewhat] user interface). I never much liked Windows internals, and when I saw there was a product that had the internals I liked with a user interface that was also better than what I was using, I began thinking critically about my position. At the time, (post-Vista, pre-iPhone) it seemed like Microsoft had lost its ability to miraculously turn out good software every three years. I was not alone in believing so, there was a large exodus of developers from the platform after Vista launched. I used Linux exclusively for about six months, then when the iPhone came out, I was stunned. I think everyone was, regardless of their personal convictions. I said to myself, "here is a company that truly makes amazing products," and my "allegiance" was mostly solidified. "/sarc"

As I've said before, I still use Linux, and I keep up with all tech news. I still use Windows too, but after Vista it was no longer my platform of choice.

This isn't of course to say that there aren't any advantages to using Windows, the domain system is incredible, on a technical level and functionally. Microsoft still knows how to take risks, they just don't anymore understand which risks to take, or how to take them.

Good posts as you say it are generally buried beneath tons of absolute crap posts. Just because some good posts exist doesn't mean that the other 90% posts that are absolute crap are nullified. If a video card manufacturer makes a GPU with a 60% fail rate you would totally reject that maker. What about a forum with an even worse post rate? The presence of quality posts is irrelevant when said posts are completely concealed by utter rubbish.

And what's so wrong in that? Most people come ask after drivers without looking into product site. Most people ask basic things about mobo without reading manual first.

LMGTFY links are against CoC (if you didn't know that) but I let this one past in sense of conversation.

Googleing isn't always the best way of finding answers. I mean I google some answers to questions asked on forum. What I have found that people don't know how to google. Some say in post that they have tried to google first and can't find answers (usually product specific questions). Then when I do googleing, I found answers almost always.

I must've missed that section :(

I love LMGTFY... though I do love my sarcasm and can see how it's justifiably banned.

I'm not going to argue with you there... more than half my post was arguing in favour of people that didn't google, or, as you said, didn't know how. If that's the way he so chooses to help, however, need not complain that they didn't first, and simply lead them there. I never understood the whole "google it first" concept. Each situation may very well be unique, you could present with the same problem five times, and find five independent solutions.
