Alexa instructs child on how to fatally injure themselves

Summary

An alexa advised a 10 year old child on a "challenge" that would have ended with the child electrocuting themselves.

"The outcome from this is that someone will get seriously hurt." Ms Livdahl tweeted that her daughter was "too smart to do something like that".Amazon told the BBC in a statement that it had updated Alexa to prevent the assistant recommending such activity in the future. "Customer trust is at the centre of everything we do and Alexa is designed to provide accurate, relevant, and helpful information to customers," said Amazon in a statement.

 

My thoughts

It goes to show that minors should not have unmonitored access to the internet, whether through computers, phones, tablets, or even assistants. A assistant, such as an Alexa is generally going to be trusted by a minor due to previous interactions with it, and it would not surprise me for them to follow the instructions. It appears that the original reporter of the issue had not set up kids mode, and the challenge option appears down currently, so it's unclear how that would have affected the outcome. However, based on how Amazon is handling it, it appears that they may add curated challenges, instead of pulling random ones from bing.

Kids mode or not, this will remain an inherent danger of pulling random stuff from the internet. Either some system needs to be made that somehow recognises dangerous things or they need to have some form of curation at the cost of a significantly reduced set. I think there's plenty of "adults" that would do this without thinking twice, so will kids mode really solve this 😛

If it's pulling stuff from the internet it's not going to end well. I mean c'mon how many examples do we need where teaching AI from the internet is a bad idea.

enough challenges on tiktok that are deadly too, which seems to have grown "bigger" than youtube?

but yes, the internet is a wild place. sadly restricting it might not help as some kids might still find it and encourage other kids or by someone else.

 

I guess there might be ways to solve the issue with exposure to the wild west or making the west a little bit less wild.

AI learns from humans. This is a human problem and no censoring does not work at all and has a negative effects. With that said I think we are in a new era where you need to vet your personal assistants like you would picking a babysitter for your kids.

I think that would be a good idea. Unfortunately the average person seems to disagree, and while that is still the case, depressing things like this will continue to happen, and society will become more and more at risk of harm from cyberattacks and even simple network outages.

By the way, my desktop is a docked laptop. Get over it, No seriously, I have an exterrnal monitor, keyboard, mouse, headset, ethernet and cooling fans all connected. Using it feels no different to a desktop, it works for several hours if the power goes out, and disconnecting just a few cables gives me something I can take on the go. There's enough power for all games I play and it even copes with basic (and some not-so-basic) video editing. Give it a go - you might just love it.

I don't think it's weird for kids to ask to do what they see other kids doing, I wouldn't consider it a personal failure of the parent 😛 I think it's possible to use the internet responsibly even as a teenager, I like to think I did.

yes, like how a lot of the whole system on "youtube for kids" is soo abused. At least there isn't quite an "elsa gate", but I bet one can find awful rabbit holes in their systems. then coming back to how creators are treated. 😕

That's in line with what I said. My wording wasn't very clear, but I meant that disabling this in kids mode (it seems kids mode wouldn't allow this challenge functionality from what I've read) wouldn't solve the problem and that you indeed need curating if you want to catch the bad things.

That's not sarcasm; that's a very good question in fact. You have to understand that elected officials are inherently opportunistic by nature. If it helps certain people in positions of power, absolutely, both content creators and those that host content can, and often are, thrown under the bus once it hits mainstream media proportions.

 

"It's for the children" is an emotionally driven phrase that abandons rationality/logic in favor of a "You must DO something NOW" reaction.
