Facebook suspends Signal from it's advertising platform

Summary

The people behind the messaging app Signal decided to have some fun at the expense of Facebook. They created an ad campaign on Instagram that showed users some of their data that Facebook has collected on them and is selling to anyone.

 

The ads made headlines quickly and Facebook decided to take action by suspending Signal’s advertising account from their platform. Because user data can be sold, but not shared with the users themselves.

 

The following are a few examples of the ads shown to Instagram users, each user saw their very own extremely personalized ad.

My thoughts

More negative publicity on Facebook’s data collection. As if anything stops the zuggernaut.

 

I actually saw mine but I didn’t read it. I can skip ads in my sleep now. I wish I had paid attention.

Who uses Facebook anyways? No advertising on Facebook? Who would actually care. I feel like there are much better ways to advertise than Facebook.

I perma deleted facebook 2 weeks ago after a few trial runs of having my account de-activated. Think it needs another 2 weeks of me not logging on until it's permanently gone. I downloaded the data prior so I atleast have it to look back on. Used it for 10+ years. All I gotta say it feels go not to be supporting that company anymore with my time & data. No regrets. If only more normies would do the same. I like what they are doing at Gab, the implemented things so well & the transparent give what money you want model works well 🙂 No adverts so no reason to sell your data. I understand Gab may be to Christian / Conservative which is why I was hoping Parler would take off cause they at least tried to be a platform for all and took no side. Atlass though that got killed by these big tech-companies. Scummy. Really wanted something besides twitter & reddit to get out of my echo-chamber cause it's healthy too. Right now it's only reddit cause I deleted twitter cause they are supper scummy like facebook. Maybe even worse.

 

Btw: Odysee is a great alternative to youtube! Support alt-tech 🙂

I call bs on those numbers. I'm talking on a regular basis not simply having an account. If that graph were accurate then that would be 2/3 people in the US use Facebook when out of the people I know hardly any use it. Sure do they have an account? Yeah but that doesn't mean shit for advertising. Daily active users is all that matters and I would doubt that those numbers are true.

If I could remove facebook out of my life... I would. But the Quest 2 is too good for the price to give up. AFAIK, there's still no way to remove facebook entirely out of it, yet.

You think it's BS because you think user account mean 1 human person. Personally I have 2 account 1 personal 1 business and at my old work place we use to have 1 account for each product line plus the main company so that was over 15 accounts.  And if I count in all the admin accounts for the various groups I am part of that is probably over 30 account that as not related to a physical person. Those stats count user account, not # of humans.

 

A bit like counting actual firearm in a country. It doesn't mean how many people use firearms but actually how many there are. If we take Canada for example as of May 1st 2020 there was 20 million registered firearms. Population was around 37 millions that would mean half the population has a firearm and that include  babies and kids.

Again for advertising you want daily active users. People who only go on your site once a month doesn't mean much to an advertiser. Monthly active users doesn't show who uses the site consistently daily. If you have 200 million in the US using Facebook once a month vs 200 million people using Facebook daily the monthly active users would be the same yet these are two very different perspectives for an advertising agency. If it was only 200 million once a month then advertisers wouldn't put much value to it but of it was 200 million daily they would attach way more value to it. Anyways until I see daily active users numbers then these don't mean much to me.

Yeah I think that assumption is pretty ridiculous for firearms. I mean my dad goes hunting and has multiple different shotguns and rifles depending on where he is hunting and what he is hunting. Same goes for Facebook as well though as I have seen alot of bots on Facebook as well and shady profiles.

Manage an e-commerce business and you'd change your mind real quick. Although not ideal, Facebook is probably the top platform for advertising your products, right behind Google and Instagram.

I'm not sure what to think because Facebook (and Google as well) does allow users to see their advertising data. Actually Lon Seidman made a video about this: 

Maybe it's not the same kind of data? I have no idea but it's quite detailed, so it's not as bad as some people might think.

1/3rd of americans is 100 million people. Thats not a small group, you can very easily isolate yourself with people who don't use it.

I guess its possible. I'm not saying that I don't know people who use it because I do but I actually don't know anyone that uses it on a regular basis. Also I wonder how many of those people are bots as I have encountered many when I use to use it. Granted this was back in 2013 so maybe its gotten better since then.

That means nothing. You don't need a Facebook account for them to track and sell your data
