Android sends 20x more data to Google than iOS sends to Apple, study says

both companies collects a lot of data, but whats the alternative. An old motorola v3 or another simple phone, not a smartphone.

The amount of telemetry being sent means nothing, what's important is what data the telemetry being sent actually contains..I remember a few years back when someone discovered Windows 10 connected back to MS 1000s of times per day, it was what started the whole "Windows 10 is spyware" movement, then some people who actually knew what they were doing took a look and discovered that 99% of the traffic was totally benign and was for things like time & date checking, update checking, settings retrieval from MS servers etc etc. Of course by that point the damage was done and none of the conspiracy theorists bothered to read the results from the experts so Windows 10 still has that reputation to this day despite MS having a website which tells you EXACTLY what they collect and for what purpose.

 

Just because an app is talking to a server often doesn't automatically mean its harvesting your data.

Can I also point out people and their "oh you have a phone huawei/xiaomi enjoy your chinese spyware". I'm definitely not worried about some company or government spying on a nobody in another country, they won't understand whats going on anyway. Been using their phones for years and im perfectly satisfied.

You are correct, I need to constantly call apple, on my second phone, to get anything done on my iPhone, like launching an app. Apple has full control I can to nothing without calling apple.

I'm less concerned about relative data transmission levels and more that both Apple and Google say the findings are technically inaccurate. I wouldn't completely rule out a bit of spin, but it sounds more like the researchers are drawing some genuinely incorrect conclusions out of this.

 

It's reasonable to say that Google thrives more on data collection, since that's its business model... but it might not be this particular data collection.

You don't own an iPhone, its more like a rental agreement where you pay in full upfront and then still have to abide by their usage conditions. They don't even give users the choice to unlock the device at the cost of warranty and service.

Ca you install custom firmware? All 3rd party firmware are pure garbage that someone cooked up one version on XDA and is always broken and gets no updates ever. Even LineageOS that's among the best and I was always stuck on stupid nightlies and apps that didn't work because phone was unlocked (banking apps or Netflix).

 

Install apps from anywhere else? Why would you? GooglePlay is as bad as it is and you'd like to sideload apps of questionable quality/condition. I've been there and most literally host fake apps or modified legit apps that have god knows what piggybacked on them. Literally only reason you'd care for sideloading is piracy. Or having buchered phone with forcibly removed Google services in which case you have bigger problems anyway.

 

Yes, you do own an iPhone.  I bought one and it's very much mine. And works with stuff I want and it works for me. And I use iPhone with zero Google apps and I also don't use ANYTHING from Apple. Only thing that could partially qualify is Siri. Because it's just there and I use it for basic tasks like starting a timer or doing basic math and stuff like that. I don't use Safari, I don't use iCloud storage or mail, I don't use Apple Maps, nothing. Everything are 3rd party apps and services.

 

I did quick migration back to Android few weeks ago and it took me few hours just to fire up old Android and just install all the apps and sign in to them. And everything was on Android phone again. Only annoyance were contacts exporting which is a bit silly, admittedly, but I just exported them through ProtonMail and imported them with Contacts app on Android. Done.

 

I've tried flashing ROM's and like I said, they are always one of ports of something, poor support. And because you have to unlock the phone, stuff like Banking and video streaing often won't even work. It's just NOT worth the effort and fiddling. iPhone, when it comes to OS software support is just unmatched by ANY Android phone. With 5 years of active timely support, you just don't give a shit about any of above.

People just don't give a shit about flashing ROM's as much as you think they do. The phone I flashed with wonderful amazing custom ROM was just unlock. It wasn't rooted. Yet banking app just straight up refused to work because it was unlocked. And because I need the app for 2FA authentication, there was no point in doing that. And I've been reading reports of stuff like Netflix not working either.

 

People think you need ROm flashing because of utterly garbage software support on basically all Android phones. It's a reason why I've gone with iPhone in the first place. When you have 5 years of OS updates, you just don't give a shit about any of points you've stated. They are just entirely irrelevant. I cared about all this crap while having Android phone and was miserably outdated very quickly. Where with iPhone, I for a fact know I'll get iOS 15 and also iOS 16. Maybe even iOS 17 if lucky since iPhone XR was one of more popular models and those tend to get even better support. It's not about "my" needs, the fact is, this part is just better and it's better so far ahead I'm willing to live with Apple specific quirks like Safari engine requirement for browsers. It's a minor thing to deal with when the most important thing, the OS itself is just so much better supported. It's literally the first time in 10 years of using smartphones that I don't feel pressured into buying new phone just to get latest OS. Crazy, right?

There's a middle ground to be found here.

 

Rej is being hyperbolic about firmware and sideloading; I can definitely see the value of both (and yes, there can be quality ROMs and non-Play-Store apps). At the same time, though, I reject the "you don't own your iPhone" rhetoric. You're not living in the shackles of oppression because you can't sideload Fortnite or install a custom launcher. You have plenty of control over your device — not as much, certainly, but it's there.

 

I look at it this way: Apple's walled garden has significant problems, but you're not making some noble stand by picking Android, either.

By that definition, so is Windows 7, in case you weren't aware, some security updates that were in Windows 7 since 2016 were there to add telemetry to Windows 7.

 

I get the issues with privacy and what you want to share with OS makers, but as it was pointed out earlier, pretty much any and all modern OS outside of Linux will send telemetry back to HQ.

Do you truly believe that? I highly doubt a company would give up on billions of revenue because they "respect your privacy". The only company I semi-believe is Apple because they are upsetting companies like Facebook and charge so much for their devices they don't need to harvest data as a business plan. This whole "walled garden" thing is so ridiculously exaggerated I'm literally physically annoyed by it as an iPhone user who knows it's BS that's just being repeated by clueless Android users who haven't even seen iPhone up close in person. And I've been believing those idiots everything they were saying. Until I was so annoyed by Android's nonsense I just dived in with iPhone. And it's NOTHING what people are saying about it. All the apps I used on Android I also have on iPhone. Most of them are actually of higher quality and designed better.

Folks exaggerate how terrible Apple's walled garden is, but it does mean that certain kinds of apps and integrations (and yes, some good ones) are off-limits. What about beta tests that would be too large-scale to fit into Apple's TestFlight, for instance?

 

To be clear, I'm not clamoring to throw the gates wide open, just noting that Apple is making a calculated decision that includes a few compromises to achieve certain goals. I wish we'd get away from the notion that Apple or Google policies have to be perfect to feel like we've made the right choice.

You don't own an iPhone, its more like a rental agreement where you pay in full upfront and then still have to abide by their usage conditions. They don't even give users the choice to unlock the device at the cost of warranty and service.

Lets be honest. 90% of phone users don't care about any of that stuff. Especially iPhone users. You used to be able to perfectly do all of that, but no one really cares, thats why theres no point in Jailbreaking now. 

 

With an iPhone, you pay for a good, solid phone, that people know will work for a long length of time. Does everything you need to. Not much else.

As for not giving users the choice to “unlock” their phone....wtf? Of course they do. You can buy an unlocked iPhone directly from Apple and even if your iPhone is locked, carriers are required to unlock it if you request it and have paid off the phone.

You technically 'own' it, but without apples software you're basically left with a fancy brick made of aluminum or glass, and you have absolutely no choice in software so apple has control over your device, unless you believe that a glass sandwich or aluminum brick is something worth owning. And apple can choose to slow down your device to force you to buy a new one, just like they did before and you can basically do jack shit to change that.

The latest jailbreak that works on IOS 14.5 is Checkra1n and it only works with iphone 7's or older devices so if you have a newer iPhone and you actually update it, you can't do anything to jailbreak it. I can get my phone rooted using a simple APK where I just start the app, click start and it roots it for me, very simple and easy, and this method works for many devices, not all but many.
