Yeah, ok Twitter. Even after the rest of the industry is doing their best to take it down. You could do something about this on your platform, you have made that very clear in the past few weeks. (Which I have no opinion on only commenting on the subject at hand), you should definitely do something about this.

The passive-aggressiveness is strong in this thread.

 

Really, the shame is that it took formal action to get this taken down; Twitter doesn't knowingly allow this stuff on a regular basis.

That sounds like an excuse Twitter and Facebook came up with. There are ways to moderate it but it requires a lot of money, resources, and it would cut into profits. Youtube had and probably still has it's underground child pedo ring videos that people complained about for years and years but Youtube didn't do anything until recently.

The fact some people here are surprised says a lot.

 

Twitter openly engages in censorship, spreads false information, purposefully labels factual credible info as false, is hyper 'partisan' on both domestic and foreign political and social issues, is part of an aggressive oligopoly, and doesnt even abide by its own rules, let alone laws.

Hell, Facebook even went so far use hugely overbearing AI tools that ended up banning huge amounts of collateral damage (notable examples being famous portraits and sculptures), then people got super pissed and forced FB to tone down/revoke that system. 

 

Can we demand FB/Twitter do better? Yes. Can we try to make rules more consistent and clear rather than each company wild-westing it out? Also yes.

 

Is the problem anything less than extremely hard? NO. Can we ever expect perfect results? NO.

I don't know UK law, but in the US, you would still have to report the exchange regardless of what circumstances under which it took place. Legally. There are no exceptions for "was trying to help" once you are aware of the content in the fullest sense.

 

I really don't see that as anything other than legal departments covering ass.

I suggest you read the article, the BBC asked for an official answer as to why some 80% of the illegal material wasn't removed after multiple reports.  FB asked for links, and obviously, it's a requirement to have this reported to the authorities, so why did FB asked to see it ??? The whole situation is out of a 'The Onion' article.

 

I'm not arguing that this shouldn't be reported to authorities, that's not the point at all, the point is, FB didn't removed illegal content after multiple reports, when pressed for comments, they willfully requested links to said illegal content, then acted surprised when they got it. If you can't see the ridiculousness of it all, then I don't know what to say.

Some have since the EU ruling, that about the option to delete yourself with services that should help cases like this.

Issues around anything sexual or more serious content have and will stay a problem for any big social media platforms.

Like some have stated, google might have a much more serious detection system than something like twitter have.

 

One of the issues I do have with twitter and other social media platforms is the report functions, either lacking or makes the report system useless.

Just hide or block people.

Can we demand FB/Twitter do better? Yes. Can we try to make rules more consistent and clear rather than each company wild-westing it out? Also yes.

 

Is the problem anything less than extremely hard? NO. Can we ever expect perfect results? NO.

You just made the case for why Twitter should be broken up. Math says they can't do their job. Then law says they should be shut down.

 

That's Twitters problem, not society. Do or do not, there is no try.

The issue isn't demanding perfection, as I agree that is not really possible, it's the fact Facebook has a track record for extremely inhumane practices like experimenting on suicidal teens, tracking you on other sites even if you don't have a facebook account, or hosting fake political ads because all they care about is $$$$. In more recent news Facebook has been crying because Apple is actually making strides to put a dampen on their business model of selling your entire existence to anyone who's willing to pay. Having proper moderation that doesn't harm the experience is hard but not impossible. We just need law makers to actually hold tech companies to standards and ethics. As of now it's the wild west and they can simply lobby their way into anything.

I genuinely don't think you're grasping the severity of these allegations, one of the largest and highest profile social media platforms allowed a video of a 13 year old girl being raped (sex with a minor is always considered as rape since a minor cannot legally give consent) to remain live on their platform despite being told about it by both the victim and the police and then tried to hide behind their policies to defend themselves.

Not sure what punishment could be imposed that would get Twitter’s attention. Many of the big tech companies have shown to be able to shrug off billion dollar fines. In some cases, share price has actually increased. Raising funds isn’t a problem. 
 

Suppose if you were really intent on making an example, asset forfeiture could be imposed. This is often done in the case of property used in commission of a crime. If this were to extend to intellectual and intangible property as well (as server hardware is easily replaced), you pretty much have Twitter dead to rights.

There is no secret censorship cabal. It's algorthims, and algorithms learn by what content they were trained on. That's what happens on Twitter, Facebook and Youtube. That's why these sites turn into massive echo chambers, you have two or more groups of people all shouting at each other, within their own circles but rarely do those circles overlap.

 

As a personal example, on one twitter account, nearly every left-wing artist I follow has been complaining at some magnitude of the ineptitude of the former president. On the other twitter, which I follow youtubers, the ex-president hasn't even been mentioned in months. You can quite literately have a completely different experience on twitter by not following any celebrity.

 

So most claims of "waa, I'm being censored by (twitter) for my political views" is nonsense. They were being censored because they were harassing someone publicly, like an idiot.

also one can target a lot more on these companies for other stuff they do, either the targeting of identity, religion etc. made for countries with a less clean track record of freedom. and yes these holes in the system aren't that great either, it being all floating underground like a sewer or redirected or a sinking pit, were first getting your hands wet and find yourself into the pits of elsa gate or whatever else.

It’s kind of telling that I’m seeing a bunch of stories about Twitter banning Chinese and Iranian government accounts...which obviously should’ve been done a long time ago but it’s being done now because the spotlight is on Twitter to be “consistent”.

There is no bias. Machine learning, learns from what it's fed. If it's fed "this language is violent, find posts containing this language to bury" then it will bury a lot of right-wing content along with a lot of trash-talking gaming.

 

Two different people on twitter, will have two different experiences based on who they follow. If you are following a bunch of idiots, and they complain they are being censored, perhaps it's their targets reporting it. They are literately being censored by their own actions.

I'm always surprised to see people defending those obviously huge blunders, FB ToS says it won't keep regular porn (nudity or sexually suggestive content) on it's platform, so if it's reported as porn, why is it not immediately hidden after a few reports and then flagged for review ?

Easy. They're not allowed to look at it. At the (auction site) there is a department called "prohibited items" and only a handful of people are permitted to look at the horrible content people post there, and it's traumatizing. You don't want your entire staff to be exposed to that.
