Windows Update Breaking AGAIN

WindowsUpdateBrokenAgain.thumb.png.a16da12c3f709cae1f5e09ea61914912.png

Summary

Reports of Microsoft's latest Windows Update issues are starting to rise, and though it hasn't killed any PC's -- yet -- your laptop's battery may be dead when you come back to check on it after thinking you put it to bed...

There may be other bugs as well, including the Linux subsystem terminal crashing and users' themes reverting.

According to a Techspot article

Quote

Facepalm: In a totally unexpected turn of events, a Windows 10 update has broken one of the OS’s major features. On this occasion, the bug is affecting some machines' Sleep Mode, with cases of computers repeatedly waking up for no reason, or the low power state not working at all. But there is a temporary fix.

My thoughts

The May 2020 Windows 10 update caused issues with PC's refusing to enter sleep mode. This issue was subsequently patched with update KB4568831, but it seems the September version 2004 (KB4571756) optional/Insider update has caused the issue to rear its ugly head once more. Users are reporting that their computers will refuse to enter Sleep mode even when it would normally be triggered through a hardware event (i.e.: pressing a power/sleep button or closing a laptop's lid). Apparently, some users have also experienced their PC's waking seemingly at random.

Another issue is affecting users of the Windows Subsystem for Linux 2 (WSL2), according to an article on Bleeping Computer.

Quote

This issue prevents Windows 10 2004 users from launching the Windows Terminal with WSL2, with the app crashing and throwing "Element not found" and "Process exited with code 4294967295" errors.

Lastly, Windows users may notice their system theme (Light/Dark) has reverted/changed. I personally restarted to update to version 2004 earlier today (which took longer than usual, I might add), and noticed that my taskbar had changed to white. Sure enough, when I checked the Theme settings, my laptop was set to "Light." I'm likely not the only one whose PC had this happen, and I would assume that the bug (if it is a bug) is related to changes Microsoft has been making to the Start Menu since May. It's also possible that changes are due to security vulnerabilities with Themes that were demonstrated recently.

So, while Microsoft isn't deleting files this time, clearly the continuing saga of Update Oopsies is a reoccurring "Theme" that we aren't likely to see disappear anytime soon. Still, one must keep in mind that early updates are just that -- early. Early access software has always, and will continue to come with a cautionary notice. As Linus, Luke, Reilly and James are fond of reminding LMG viewers; maybe waiting isn't the worst idea...

If anyone runs into any further glitches, bugs, easter eggs, or anything else in this update, feel free to add a comment about it in this thread, and I'll try to keep the post updated (for the short while that it will matter).

Windows 10 LTSB 1607 with Windows Update totally disabled, along with all the other Orwellian surveillance. Never an issue. Will never understand why more people didn't do this from the start. Even Flight Sim 2020 works like it should.

AH, NO, DON'T DO IT! XD

I see, of course, that you postponed it, as you should, but that was a close one, mate.

Most likely because most of us haven't had any issues? I mean, I have been using Windows 10 since pre-releases versions were available and I am one of those who haven't had any trouble with any updates or such. I also happen to have a good handful of Windows 10 - devices, so it's not just a one-off fluke.

Unfortunately, some people can't afford to not have updates, especially with the security risks. ...I mean, the security risks that aren't the telemetry ones ;)

I think the updates weren't the only things @TempestCatto was referring to, @WereCatf. There are a lot of undesireable Microsoft features deeply rooted in the OS of which janky updates is only the tip of the proverbial iceberg.

The tracking? Most people don't care and I use OOSU10 for that. I'm not sure what else this "undesireable Microsoft features" would mean.

Cortana, telemetry, forced updates (yes, there are other ways around that beyond disabling Update) to name just a few. Those are enough to tick off many power users and average consumers alike.

There are some games that require you to be on a newer version of Windows 10 saddly. Mostly ones that come from the microsoft store.

Phantasy Star Online 2 or whatever it was? That required it, dunno if it still does.

Hmm, I'm curious if this only effects sleep mode and not hibernate. I usually turn sleep mode off on my devices and only use hibernate. I had too many issues with it when Windows 10 first launched where it would never resume or would bluescreen.

I hope they're able to fix it though.

I don't have any battery powered Windows devices, but I really wish I would stop receiving the BSOD every time I try to wake my PC's from sleep mode...

:( is it safe just to stick with 1909?  Because I keep on hearing bad things about 2004 feature update.

I'd say it's worth it to stay away from 2004, but that depends on the risks you take online and how critical the machine is to you. If I had known about the issues beforehand, I wouldn't have done it on the laptop I use for university.

Just FYI, try not to quote the entire post when you reply. It makes a real mess of a thread.

Do you mean that your PC is boot-looping? You should try Startup Repair options such as doing a restore or letting Windows attempt repairs.

I just corrected that, you can report it and a mod will most likely edit the quote to help readability.
