AM4 upgrade options

Hi,

 

I bought an RX 9070 back in January, but I still haven't upgraded my CPU, which is Ryzen 5 2600X. However, I haven't used my PC that much because I've been travelling since April. I'm coming back home in late June, but will most likely have to travel again for a few months in the second half of the year.

 

Because of this, I'm considering getting this Lenovo Legion laptop. I'll be using it mostly for work (programming, VMs, containers, some occasional After Effects) and gaming. Considering how capable that laptop already is, I'm not sure if the gap of performance between the HX 470 and a high end AM4 CPU like the 5900XT is worth it, especially for gaming. In other words, is it worth upgrading my desktop CPU or should I stick with the laptop and older CPU, then wait for the RAM prices to drop and upgrade to AM5 or even AM6? Do you think it's worth spending $400-500 on an AM4 CPU that I would be using about  6 months per year? Are there better options with more recent platforms (I'm open to Intel as well)?

How much money do you have or make?  We can't say what's worth it to you without knowing your financial situation.

 

Dropping $2100 on a laptop seems to solve your issues?  It's a nice CPU but only a 5060 8GB.

 

You're kind of overpaying for performance by getting that laptop.  

 

Btw,  the 16c/32t 5900XT is only $285 and a drop in.  May be worth looking at.

I totally forgot this thing was 16 cores! 

 

 

The only other CPU worth upgrading to is the upcoming 10th anniversary 5800x3D, but since you primarily do work stuff on it the 5900XT makes more sense.

Yeah, it's like the 5950X's that didn't make the cut.  I got one for $199 from MC last year for my server, I am not even sure it's hit over 10% usage yet tho.

 

But it's arguably the best value AM4 CPU for productivity.
