LTT Official Folding Month 2020!!!

Go to solution Solved by GOTSpectrum,

Luckily when I said it was almost done, I really meant it.

For the last time in 2020, ladles and gentlespoons, here a blog post.

And with that said, it's a wrap! Thank you for everyone getting involved, if you'd like to continue talking about folding why not head over to The Folding Community Board

In the States its actually syndicated on MotorTrends TV network...or from ones personal DVD backups on their Plex Server.

Thanks for the info.

When looking at x570 boards I've seen these configurations, the best being the first with 28 lanes,

  • 1. pcie x16 @x16, 2. pcie x16 @x8, 3. pcie x16 @x4
  • 1. pcie x16 @x16, 2. pcie x16 @x8
  • 1. pcie x16 @x8, 2. pcie x16 @x8
  • 1. pcie x16 @x16

As far as understand this board supports: 1. pcie x16 @x16, 2. pcie x16 @x8, 3. pcie x16 @x4

https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/X570-AORUS-PRO-rev-10/sp#sp

This would be 28 lanes, it supports bifurcation but I don't know it what configuration, if its possible on the top two pcie x16 slots then I could get 7 cards with 4 lanes each at 4.0.

I see the zen 2 cpu's supporting up to 24 lanes, do we know how many lanes the new cpu's will support?

If its still only 24 lanes, then 6 cards will do I guess 😁

AMD Desktop CPUs provide only 24 PCIe lanes period. 4 are for the Chipset connection leaving 4 for assorted use (usually a x4 PCIe connection for NVMe) and 16 for the CPU-connected PCIe slots.

Some "SLI" motherboards have PCIe switches that split the 16 lanes to two PCIe x16 slots running at x8/x8.

The rest of the PCIe slots and m2 slots are all fed from the Chipset and thus share the x4 connection from the CPU.

So no matter how you slice and dice it realistically the best combination is 6 GPUs at x4 fed from one CPU on x570 usually:

The PCIe x16 slot "bifurcated" in x4/x4/x4/x4

The CPU x4 m2 slot adapted to a PCIe x16 physical slot

A x16 slot running at x4 from the Chipset OR a Chipset m2 slot adapted to a x16 slot

Yes, you can get more lanes with High-End Desktop (HEDT - Threadripper or Xeon) but the incremental per-slot (per x4 slot) cost is still lower using a Ryzen 3, 5 or 7 and a x570 motherboard supporting bifurcation.

The issue is the other PCIe slots and m.2 slot all share the x4 PCIe connection from the CPU on x570 or the DMI3 (~ same bandwidth) connection on Intel z1/2/370 or x3/490 so the GPUs connected to these slots should only be slow ones.

Here is my system on z170:

fold6_PCI_Utils.thumb.png.293c122dbc617df8cc1126f7e62307b8.png

Guess which of these is the 1070ti in the x16 slot and which ones are the 1060 6GB ones in the PCIe x4 in a x16 slot and adapted m.2 slot connected to the Chipset.

At some point that lower PCIe Rx bandwidth will start to really throttle the production of the connected GPU.

For comparison, here is a 1060 6GB connected to a PCIe2 x16 slot:

I have my 3090 in a pciex16 @x16 ver 3.0, the bus peaks at only 20% while using FAH.

image.png.0c64f201f8a00b5bf1489cda223cf247.png

I don't know if its this simple, but 20% of a pcie x16 3.0 would be around 3.14 GB/s, so pcie x2 4.0 would be more than enough, maybe some low tier cards would be ok in a pcie x1 4.0 slot.

I don't suppose its possible to bifurcate a x16 slot down to 2x2x2x2x2x2x2x2 😂

I think the standards are, x1, x4, x8 and x16. That been said, I've not seen any x2 lane devices. Depending on the work unit, it's possible that the x4 lanes would suit the 3090, however, in some cases, I do see the card maxing out the bandwidth available. My 2060 (Which ran my 3440 X 1440 monitor) has capped out at around 72% on the x4 bus.

Screenshot_39.png.6392b1e83a24e886ce3b500dbce502da.png

I do believe that the 3080 won't suffer bottlenecks with just 4 lanes... but only time will tell.

Edit;

My GPU's are running PCIe Gen 3, x4 lanes.

a pcix4 slot will throttle 2080 super and higher.  All my rigs are x570 boards bifurcated and dumping anything 2080 super or higher they throttle some.

pcix1 slots throttle everything massively.  Even some of my old RX580 8GB throttle hard on them.

Does anyone know if there is a relation to the performance of a single CPU core and the use of the bandwidth on a PCIe lane? In theory, more performance would mean less bandwidth as more is done in less time. I do have SMT disabled on my 3700X, as in the past, I did see a small improvement in the PPD, but I don't know if it's relational. FPS in games that use 1 thread is improved with SMT disabled.

Ryzen cpu has 24 lanes, 4 go to the chipset and 4 go to the nvme, this leaves 16 lanes.

As far as bifurcation goes:

In theory its possible configure bifurcation how you want, but from what I've seen gigabyte motherboards only give you the option to do x16, x8 x8 or 4x 4x 4x 4x.

6 cards look to be the max.

Can you explain in further detail why 6 is the max? I don't really have any experience with any of this and am curious.

On a side note I've managed to get some work done on the sheet to make sure it is ready to start using the week three sheet for tomorrow!

We're already 3 weeks in?  We must be folding time.

The first pcie x16 slot can only go down to 4 x4 mode, so it possible to get 4 cards running off that slot, 16 lanes split 4 times gives you 4 lanes per card.

Then you have the x4 m.2 slot, you need a m.2 to pcie x16 adapter, 4 lanes for one card here.

Then you have the 4 lanes going to the chipset, many boards have an extra pcie x16 slot running off the chipset, so you can add another card here.

So that's 6 cards, and all pcie lanes used up.
