Facebook implements email verification through asking users to supply their email password, removes feature after being called out

Story: Yesterday, Facebook users with accounts flagged as "suspicious" were presented with a new option to verify their email addresses. Instead of the normal verification process you see everywhere else (proving that the user has access to the account by sending something to it to be returned to the site, like a verification code), this new option asked users to give Facebook the password they use to sign into their email. The accompanied text on the option states that Facebook does not store the passwords, but they've lied about things like that in the past, for either malicious or incompetent reasons.

 

After the story was published by The Daily Beast, they were contacted by Facebook and told that Facebook would be ending the short-lived practice, stating “We understand the password verification option isn’t the best way to go about this, so we are going to stop offering it."

 

Opinion: Asking users for a password to another web service is dangerous, even if the passwords aren't stored, as it introduces another environment that the password passes through, one that can fail and leak the passwords. The strangest part is that this is completely unnecessary to verify that the user has the account, as sites have been doing email verification through codes emailed to the address for years now, and it works perfectly fine. The intention here seems to be either:

 

a) Make a really small QoL improvement for a small subset of users, completely ignoring the security ramifications of doing so

or

b) Intentionally try to collect these email passwords for some sort of gain, although honestly I don't think there's much that they could do with it for profit that wouldn't be immediately obvious to the users affected.

Next thing you know they will want to verify that you are a real person and be asking for your social security number instead if those I'm not a robot tests.

And behold... nothing happens afterwards. Sheep just continue to walk to Fecesbook like nothing is happening. Facebook is not stupid. Things like this don't just happen "by chance" or "by mistake". Someone vetoes things before they are sent out and this was sent out to users. This was not a mistake. If tech community wasn't vocal about it, they'd hoard millions of user passwords from service that's not even theirs. Shit like this should be criminalized because essentially they were knowingly performing a freaking phishing attack. What the fuck!? But hey, just because this is Facebook, absolutely nothing will happen. Facebook just needs to die already. Society doesn't need this cancer to exist. It really doesn't.

Jesus. There is deciet and malicious intent and then there is just down right asking for your password. Someone needs sacked and imo a data protection expert needs called in.

Facebook should be banned everywhere and their entire infrastructure instagram, whatsapp they are just garbage, worse than Huawei which is getting blocked constantly.

Lmfao! If Fakebook really does that, then they are such a cancer for the humanity and Google is the tumor.

I'm guessing they only do so if your name "sounds fake" or if someone reported you for it.

I just created a fake ID in photoshop, took a slightly blurry picture of it with a crappy phone to make it seems more legit and sent that in. It was accepted. I guess they don't give much attention to it.

I'm not giving Facebook any of my real info. Even the phone number I had to give to validate the account in the first place is a throw away one. Not like I actively use that crap in the first place... I only needed an account for things like craptastic mobile games and for commenting on some websites that only use Facebook's commenting system.
