My Thoughts:

Tesla is very obviously crunching down on spending. From laying off employees to increasing costs of services. Regardless, Tesla hype has already been ingrained in a large part of society and it'll be hard to change people's opinions about Tesla without a major scandal.

Yeah but I think to get large adoption you need the flexibility to drive cross country like a gas car can

Interesting, assuming we use the standards set by tesla that means you are paying roughly $0.09 per mile using electric. Assuming that gas costs on average $2.85 a gallon you would need a vehicle that gets at least 31mpg to break even. Considering most compact cars now a days get that or more, and you are assuming that gas costs $0.63 more than it actually does. What is the benefit to going electric versus a typical gas or hybrid? Plus you get the added benefit of being able to drive for more than ~300 miles at a time.

ya, and these cars with 300 mile range (I think) has a charge network that can do that, just now its $35 per charge which is not much higher then a normal gas car. so I don't see a issue with it.

I wouldn't be able to drive to my parents in one go with a Tesla, I would have to stop somewhere off the motorway that had a charger like Sainsbury's. Not convenient, especially if I'm in a hurry and need to get there pronto

As was alluded to in the article, it will vary based on location -- and also something that the article does NOT touch on, is that "performance" cars -- which is what the S/X (and kind of 3) compete with (actual performance cars and most luxury cars) all need premium fuel -- which costs even more. In the NY area, premium is easily $3 - $3.60.

I pay $0.14/Kwh so if I charge at how it would be roughly $0.05 per mile. most people do not drive more then 300 miles a day.

I used the Tesla route map which makes a travel plan based upon the charging stations. I think it added 2 hours of drive time which didn't account for all the waiting to charge

They have less maintenance, for standard daily driving you will never have to go to a "gas station/power station" cost per mile is lower if you use your homes electric, they have great acceleration

I think this is why Tesla is so successful in the US.

European car companies didn´t see this trend coming because they looked at European KW/h prices ~0,25 Euro.

I find it quite relaxing doing roadtrips in a Tesla. I've done SF to LA to LV and back in a 85D back in November and it wasn't really any slower than gas considering the usual breaks midtrip. Autopilot took away a lot of the fatigue that I normally had in a gas car doing the same trips. Kept it at ~85mph the entire way whenever the car's moving and not in traffic. It was definitely a lot nicer having our mid-trip stop between SF and LA at the Kettleman City Tesla lounge. It was super clean and there was In-N-Out right across the street. I feel that most people that don't think an EV can work for them are misunderstanding EVs. Change of habit is required, but once you're used to it, it doesn't take more time out of your life to own one than a gas car. I've had a Leaf for the past few years and charging at home means I don't have to go out of my way to refuel on a normal day-to-day commutes. Never needed service other than tires in the 96k miles I've put on this poor bastard. The dealer kept bothering me with service deals but they were just going to charge me to top up windshield fluids and rotate tires so I just ignore them. Brake pads still well over half at this point. I'm switching over to a 2015 85D later this year after having experienced one for a week with 1600+ miles logged. Cheaper to own than a $27-30k Accord within 5 years of ownership. 

 

That said, it's not for everyone. Charging infrastructure in your home area/state can make or break the decision to go EV.

Personally I prefer to just drive straight through and get where I'm going rather than stopping. Obviously, that isn't everyone's preference, but it is a downside of electric cars -- to me. That being said, I also don't go on long drives all that often, so it would be worth having to change my behavior for that rare scenario. 

 

That being said, the lack of engine noise is a bit of a turnoff for me.

  • Massively reduce car maintenance. No oil change (it is self lubricating), no transmission oil change (you don't have one to start with), no spark plug to change, no timing belts to change, no fan belt to change, no radiator.. and just in general far fewer moving parts, and things that can rust and break. All you need to worry is windshield liquid, cabin filter, tires, and maybe power steering wheel (depending on how long you plan to keep the car and how much driving you'll do). As for break fluid and breaks, you'll use them far less due to regenerative breaking, and Tesla is one of the few car manufacture that uses fully synthetic break fluid which lasts much longer. Already, it is something you don't change on a car very often unless you do extensive driving in a big city.

This may drop over time as recycling lithium batteries improves (a lot of money is on it already, due to the ever growing popularity of such battery format). In addition, as more cars switch to electric you, your kids, and everyone else  get breath less harmful gasses which may contribute to a healthier population.
     
  • Cheaper fuel. Home electricity is cheaper than gas.
     
  • Quieter drive and reduction in noise pollution
     
  • Safer cars. By having this empty buffer zones between you and the car in front, or rear, by not having this big engine in the way, your risk of survival increases a lot from a big accident, and same for any personal damage.

Hybrid cars are no ideal. As you have they are far more complicated systems, more things that can break (electric portion AND car engine ), smaller batteries, heavier car (reduce travel distance - don't forget the weight of gas as well). I mean it is a great option if calculate that it can save you money or if you just want to reduce carbon footprint, which you still can with such car, but not a great choice for everyone.

Assuming we compare it with an electric car, If you do super long travels, it might still be cheaper for you to just rent a gas car for that occasion.

But remember that every morning, your car is 100% charged (assuming you didn't forget plugging in), this is like having a gas station in your home, your car will always be filled in the morning. So your distance before stopping is greatly reduces. AND, for daily driving, remember that usually, when you end your day, your car has a lot of battery left, you don't drive the car in your garage and then the engine turns off as you are out of battery. In addition, more and more work places, shopping malls, and even cities, have electric charging stations. Cities do it to reduce noise and air pollution  by encouraging electric cars. Malls do it to attract electric drivers, work places as it make them look socially good by promoting their green initiative. If you have a parking lot where you work, you can be sure that the company will be open installing a few charging stations if they have none. Cost them virtually nothing, and also makes a nice perk for employees. Of course, do this BEFORE buying an electric car, as you never know and bureaucracy might takes ages. But just saying.

Well considering that more and more cars have fake engine noises being played through the car speakers to compensate for the smaller and more efficient engine they are putting to meet regulations, I am sure you do the same. And you can mod your Tesla Model 3 with a fake manual transmission box and shift pedal, and you can pretend you drive manual, even though nothing is connected. :D

 

Anyway. self driving car, as it gets better, will remove you from driving all the time, and that means more constant speed, reduce accidents, and better driver, all contributing with reduce traffic. Ever drove, stuck in traffic, only to go out of it and notice there was nothing? Well guess what... some idiot hit the breaks or driving to slow or forcing others to breaks due to constant or multi lane switching in 1 shot, is at fault here. Yes, they are research on this proving this and showing the wave of such impact.

 

If people used cruise control on highways, go with the speed of all the cars, and pick the right lanes to take well ahead and keep distance between each car is enough to really reduce traffic. But sadly, stop and go is done when there is traffic instead of smoothing things, last minute lane switch, variable speed, etc is all done making traffic worse, making our roads much less efficient, not to mention pollute more, use more your breaks, add strain to your engine, and so on.

Not a problem. In Canada and US (and I think all or near all countries with 120V), have 240V lane that leads to home (220V for Mexico, not sure for other regions). This is used for electric ovens and electric heaters (if any). And even if the home doesn't have any need for it, they still have the line coming in to their home. Most homes (especially true on new homes) also have their electric box next to or in the garage. This means the installation of 220-240V charging station can be much reduced.

 

There is a push in some states and provinces to even have a line pre-installed by law in the garage or outdoor, to have new homes ready to have a charging station, like it is for ovens and cloths dryers next to a washer.
