AMD rumoured to have less than 5,000 Radeon VII Graphics Cards

At CES 2019 AMD revealed their Radeon VII graphics card, making them the first company to launch a 7nm gaming graphics card. During their Radeon VII reveal, the company revealed a price tag of $699 and a release date of February 7th, but rumour has it that the Radeon VII will be a smaller launch than expected. 

TweakTown has reported that AMD will launch with "less than 5,000" Radeon VII graphics card, with sources claiming that AMD will lose money on every graphics card sold. The Radeon VII was originally designed as the Radeon Instinct MI50, a graphics chip that wasn't expected to receive a consumer release due to the graphics card's costly 4-module HBM2 memory configuration and its large 7nm die size. 

It has also been reported that there will be no custom variants of AMD's Radeon VII graphics card, though Tweaktown states that this has not been confirmed by sources at any of AMD's AIB partners. 

No custom variants is a very weird move by AMD. Maybe this will open up other avenues of lower-binned cheaper variants being used by AIBs, for cheaper.

AMD's Lisa Su has stated that PC gamers will "hear more about Navi in 2019" (more info here), leading many to believe that AMD's next-generation graphics architecture will release in the second half of this year, potentially making the Radeon VII 7nm Vega a short-lived entry into Radeon's product stack.  

Hopefully this means more SKUs. 

 

I wonder if this means that the Radeon VII is a one-hit wonder. This shortfall will mean the price may increase drastically however over rrp. 5000 cards is not much at all. Certainly a lot to think about as to why this is the case. If they want to compete with Nvidia and expect to get sales, prices are just going to increase out of reasonable price/performance fairly soon. Maybe a collectors edition soon?

AMD Responds to Radeon VII Short Supply Rumours

This morning AMD has released an official response to these rumours, claiming that the company expects to meet demand from gamers, declining to release detailed production numbers. On top of that, AMD also confirmed that the company's AIB partners would be selling Radeon VII graphics cards, alongside their retail presence on AMD.com, which means that AMD has produced their new graphics card in large enough quantities for AIBs to receive a sizable stock allocation.  

Sadly this statement doesn't confirm whether or not there will be any custom variants of the Radeon VII, such as an ROG Strix model, MSI GamingX version or a Sapphite Nitro variant. In this case, versions from AIB partners are likely to use AMD's reference design, which already boasts a triple fan cooler design. The statement below should not be seen as a confirmation of custom AIB versions of the Radeon VII. 

No real number specified on number of units. This could mean low demand or ample supply.

In a recent interview, AMD's Adam Kozak confirmed that the Radeon VII would support DirectML, Microsoft's Machine Learning (ML) add-on to DirectX 12, opening the door to AI-powered enhancements with AMD's latest graphics card. The Radeon VII boasts a lot of potential in the world of AI, though it remains to be seen how long it will take for these AI features to become more prominently featured within new games. A DirectML alternative to DLSS is also on the cards.  

I wonder how AI could be implemented in games, seeing as computer players are meant to be easily beaten on the most difficult settings with the appropriate strategies.

I think that when Nvidia's CEO said : "not impressive", he knew this is probably what's going on...

Selling a very little amount of newly made GPUs just for attention??? 

If it is not broken, let's fix till it is.

It seems like the release of the Vega cards, almost no coverage or pow-wow about the Vega Frontier. A good card for AMD to release, but hardly see them anywhere and good luck getting one. Could be repeating the Vega mistake.

Looks like what happened was AMD never thought they will be able to sell this at cost in the gaming market.

 

But Nvidia surprised them with the high prices so there was room to sell this at break even for $699; just to ensure they maintain presence in the high end. AMD was probably expecting RTX 2080 tier performance to be around $500-550 in this generation so they weren't going to bother until Navi.

This card is aimed at institutional use. Releasing it as a gaming card is just a way to fly the flag, trail the colors, at a the high end price point so people don't forget about them. I don't think only 5000 units is a big deal. I would be a little surprised if they sold them all.

 

Although it does give us a nice benchmark point to build off of for the smaller variants of 7nm Vega. I hope to see more but this card, while not lousy, is rather boring. It's there to take up space, not push.

RedGamingTech had a leak before the Radeon 7 announcement that there would be 20k at launch and potentially more later, depending on sales.

No custom variants is a very weird move by AMD. Maybe this will open up other avenues of lower-binned cheaper variants being used by AIBs, for cheaper.

I wonder if this means that the Radeon VII is a one-hit wonder. This shortfall will mean the price may increase drastically however over rrp. 5000 cards is not much at all. Certainly a lot to think about as to why this is the case. If they want to compete with Nvidia and expect to get sales, prices are just going to increase out of reasonable price/performance fairly soon. Maybe a collectors edition soon?

I think there was a leak somewhere that before Mike Rayfield retired, he put out a few unfeasible ideas, including Radeon VII which supposedly costed $750 to build. Possible that AMD were supposed to release Navi at CES, then they delayed it due to some reason and only had Radeon VII to show everyone. Maybe that's why they released it?

I'm sure it depends on how good the 7nm yields are right now compared to how much demand they are getting for Radeon instinct GPUs from datacenters around the world. They will obviously prioritize the instinct GPUs becuase they can sell those for thousands of dollars, while allocating a small percentage of cards for the gaming market just to maintain presence. Now if the 7nm yields are so high that they are far outstripping the demand for instinct cards then we can expect to see more Radeon 7 gaming GPUs. But if production capacity is tight then gamers will be de-prioritized obviously.

AMD's high-end sales have been a mess for a while, though it's probably important to remember that both AMD & Nvidia actually sell more into the Compute market than they do in the Retail market of the high end GPUs. High-end GPUs used to be a lot cheaper because they sold to Retail, now, with Big Data, that's simply different.  There's a reason Nvidia released the 2080 Ti for >1200USD and didn't feel the least bit of shame for it. Those dies sell for a lot more for their actual purpose.

Exactly that's how it was. And they probably won't ramp up the production either, wich is why the card is only available directly from AMD. Because its a limited edition...

 

But then again, Navi is coming and might also replace VEGA, so its just sold a rather sort time anyway...

No, its a very smart move for a card that probably won't be available for long and is only there to sell chips they don't want/need for HPC Cards.

 

And there won't be a cheaper version, this is as cheap as it gets, because HBM is THAT expensive to manufacture!

Because if you mess up the last HBM stack, you can throw away a perfectly fine Graphics Chip and FOUR HBM Stacks. Even if that only happens to a fraction of the parts, its still expensive to throw them all in the dumpster.

They can only compete with the others when people actually buy the Cards.

When nobody buys the cards, even if they are the better value and you get castrated green ones for more money, how can there ever be a competition when everyone sees them only as means to reduce the price??

Same here. Because in that price range, there aren't many people willing (and able) to buy the card.

Most just stick to the green team for no reason whatsoever...

 

So 5000 Cards are a ton, especially if like 5% of the high end buyers might just consider it...


That's the gamers. Content creators is a different story. They might take the other 4000 cards (and more) that the Gamers don't want.

HardOCP's Kyle Bennett spoke to Scott Herkelman from AMD at CES about the card. Kyle believes that, based on supply, there will be AIB versions of the VII. However, they will not be at launch and exactly how many and what AIBs do will heavily depend on supply.

In the interview, Herkelman would only confirm that it will be a reference-only launch and that is all they were announcing at that time, which definitely leaves them open to allowing custom AIB designs down the road. its pretty much going to a paper launch with a few of them being sold to some workstation users and then the people who refuse to buy Nvidia for various reasons. will be nice to see how these overclock without powerlimits. 

 

why not the Vega VII fusion. liquidcooler only with stupid powerdelivery. noones gonna buy it regardless of how good it is. and that is the sad realty. they have no reason to compete at the high end, even if they could (which GCN cant)
