10,000 Hour Theory

So recently my guitar teacher brought up the 10,000 hour theory. For those of you who don't know. If you work for 10,000 hours at something you've officially mastered it. So one day in math class I was thinking. "Have I spent 10,000 hours in school?" So I whipped out my calculator and did the math. Going to a standard American public school I spend 8 hours a day at school. We'll define this variable as H. Then there are 5 days a school week. (D) 36 weeks in a school year.(S) And being a 6th grader by the end of the year I will have spent 7 years in school.(Y)  So if you do the math.

 

H*D*S*Y

(8*5*36*7)

 

Equals 10,080 hours of being a student. So by the end of the year if we account for the 10 or so days I've missed I will have spent 10,000 hours being a student. So technically I'm a master at being a student.

Nope, I have put more than 10,000 hours of effort in to somethings (napkin math) but I know I am not a master.  Guitar being one,  I can play but I would not call myself a master by any stretch of the imagination.

Well... That's not really how the rule works.

It has to be deliberate practices of a single thing. Like playing chess, or the piano.

Probably worth mentioning that it's just a rule to achieve "world-class expertise", and there are several people saying it's not true.

You sure you put 10K hours into guitar practice? Not just playing, but actually focused and practice it.

There is another saying along the lines of an expert is someone who has done something once. You don't have to be good at it, but you can tell others you've done it... like most posts on forums!

Yep, if not, then close enough to know that not everyone can become a master at just anything.    I could fill in for a song or two in a pub gig and half the audience probably wouldn't notice, but if I sit in a studio the engineer will know straight up I am not cut out for it. 

 

Let me rephrase for those who like absolutes:

There probably is some truth to the saying for people who already have a disposition or for certain fields, but master musician is a very big claim for just 10,000 hours and many people simply do not have the innate talent to master an instrument.

Until you go to college. The point of school is increasing levels of specificity.

Elementary school is very broad strokes: Here's how to count, here's the alphabet, here's how you add and subtract.

Junior college is slightly finer still: Here's some classes geared specifically towards your area of expertise, but you'll also be taking "core" classes.
University is pretty darn fine strokes: Here's some classes that have to do with your degree.
Graduate school is extremely fine strokes: I'm self studying this one specific aspect of my field.

You're still not a master after said schooling, you only become a true master after doing it for 10,000 hours of practice. Basically a true master of anything useful for work at the age of 18 one would require 4 hours a day Mon-Fri 8 hours Sat/Sun 52 weeks of the year and started at the age of 12 years and 8 months.

 

I'm a master of nothing, due to getting bored of doing it before 10,000 hours. The closest i have gotten next to work, is Runescape... which i dont play any more
