Got to move that gear up - 60th anniversary Sega announces mini retro handheld console

Update: four different games area available for each color of the Game gear, uses AAA batteries but can be powered with 1A USB instead. The full package will cost you 277 USD.

As part of SEGA's 60th anniversary, the company is releasing a retro handheld console. With the size comparable to a GameBoy Micro, the Game Gear micro is a fun device for around 46USD available next week (June 10th). It was revealed at an talk with SEGA's CEO on their website.

This is a miniaturized version of the "Game Gear" portable game console that was released by Sega on October 6, 1990, 30 years ago. Speaking of Sega's miniaturized game consoles, the "Mega Drive Mini" was released in September 2019, but it will follow.

This is what was revealed at the end of the dialogue between Sega Group CEO Haruki Satomi and Sega Shiro, which was posted on the 60th anniversary website of SEGA. In the dialogue, CEO Satomi suddenly announced "Game Gear Micro" while touching on "the possibility of new SEGA hardware" and "SEGA contents in the future" along with Sega's past.

Thoughts: I've played a little bit of the game gear from my cousin over a decade ago, the grip is definitely better than the Gameboy at that time, but SEGA's shortfalls really killed any chance for the console to soar. And considering gamegear emulation exists on mobile this might only be attracting to more close fans of the product. A personal issue with me would be how horrendously small that monitor is, and my eyesight isn't 20/20.

Updated thoughts: Oh yeah that limited game pool is going to be a turn off for a lot of people.

Tbh, I’m not, really. Throw together a box of decent Genesis/Megadrive games to connect to a 4K tv, allow optional crt shaders (CRT Royale especially) and nearest-neighbor scaling, then we can begin talking.

How is $229 less expensive than $5? $5 is for the pi zero so $35 for the most powerful pi if you want to emulate N64, GBA, and PS1 games. But you can make a raspberry pi gameboy clone for around $40 with the pi zero in an altoids tin

I didn't know you could make a gameboy. Physical quality (esp. screen) must suffer though.

Depends on how much you wanna spend but some people are pretty good at making clones
