Survey claims 86 percent of US teens plan to choose iPhone as next smartphone

A new survey by Piper, involving 8,600 teens from across the country, found that a whopping 86% of them planned to have their next smartphone be an iPhone.

Quote

That percentage — gauged across 47 states during the fall of 2018 — ranks against 84 percent last spring, investment firm Piper Jaffray said on Monday. The average age of those surveyed was 15.9, and the average household income $68,300.

Now of course most teens are not employed so there is is very little certainty involved in a survey like this, but it does show that Apple has the mindshare of the youth in the country. Good news for Apple, bad news for Android OEMs in the US who rely on volume of sales since their margins are usually a lot lower than that of Apples.

Personally I could care less what phone other people have, but everyone having AirDrop is super convenient so I for one welcome our new dolphin overlords.

The survey also asked a handful of other questions and found that Netflix was the #1 source of daily video content

Quote

Piper found that Netflix was the most popular source of daily video consumption, coming in at 38 percent. It surpassed YouTube's 33 percent, despite the ubiquity of the free Google platform.

...Hulu ranked fourth with just 5 percent, beaten even by cable TV's 16 percent.

...Snapchat was the top social media platform for teens, favored by 46 percent, followed by Facebook's Instagram at 32 percent. Though popular among adults, Twitter, Facebook, and Pinterest managed just 6, 5, and 1 percent, respectively.

Apple being more popular in the US does not of mean that Apple would lose interest in competing, Apple is a company after all and as long as the foreign market is still massively dominated by Android there is money to be made. The problem Apple faces is the price their brand commands. Developing markets do not have the best economies and their citizens have relatively lower purchasing power; if Apple wishes to expand, prices need to fall.

I used to have a job so I'm in a position where I can indeed buy an iPhone X outright on Apple.com if I wanted to, but in my experience with friends, it is well known that most teens with iPhones tend to be gifted those.

Not to mention the (rather sizable) segment of the North American market who aren't particularly thrilled at the idea of spending $750-1250 USD for a phone ?.

Is it safe to assume that the survey may have been a bit skewed? It said an investment firm conducted the survey but I didn't see how it was distibuted.

It's a little less impressive when you consider that earlier that year the same survey has 84% for apple which is a 2% growth of their surveyed market share.

Teens are dumb. They are easily sway by slick marketing. Just look at how many purchase beats by Dre headphones, a brand well known to sell rip off products according to many consumers research firms. Interestingly, Apple also owns that company. Coincidence?

Formula is this. Celebrities+shiny+popular kids using these products=good teenage marketing. Kids at that age only cares about fitting in and appeasing their peers. It is the perfect psychology.

Teens are also easily influenced.

And really, they don't give much info. We don't know how many "teens" were surveyed, who paid for that survey to be made, how realistic it would be for these teens to actually get an Apple device, etc.

A survey about Apple, on a website for Apple, portraying Apple in a positive way.... Yeah, totally not shady at all and 100% legit.

On the one hand yes, but on the other hand, I can't think of many parents that outright deny their teen an iPhone, you can find an iPhone 7 for a good price these days.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

I think you guys have to understand that they PLAN for it to be a new iPhone. Money literally doesn't matter in this scenario. Doesn't matter who buys it. They're saying they would prefer an iPhone over an android.

As a life long Andorid user, I am one of those 86% who intend on using an iPhone as their next phone.

Yes, iOS is more limited. But I have been experiencing the most annoying levels of instability on Android that from my research simply doesn't exist on iOS.

I also use a MacBook (See bio for specs), which is hacked to Mojave. The integration between iOS and macOS is amazing, and as I transition from adolescent to adult the simple convenience of iOS is becoming more valuable than faffing around in Android settings trying to figure out why my phone is dying 5 hours before it did yesterday.

I will always keep a windows machine for gaming, and I will game so long as I have time for it. But for any productivity oriented tasks? Apple has MS beat. And Microsoft created Windows as a business OS ?

Brands I wholeheartedly reccomend (though do have flawed products): Apple, Razer, Corsair, Asus, Gigabyte, bequiet!, Noctua, Fractal, GSkill (RAM only)

Teens with new iPhones are spoiled brats, but teens with new S10+ which costs $1K outright as well isnt? What if their parents are just socio-economically capable of buying $1K phones for all their kids without batting an eye, are they still spoiled brats nonetheless?

Well as long as people keep spreading the assumption that only poor people have Androids, this doesnt surprise me. It doesnt matter that an S10+ is a few $ less, its still a thing that influences young teens.

It truly is

One question I do have about the mode of gathering information is what do they mean by teens?
I assume it means 13-19
and if that is the case, then I can see why maybe the data may skew that way.

I'm 19

I had a Galaxy S8+ that I got in 2017 from a $300 off sale, that I was mostly paying for myself and went to an iPhone XR that I am fully paying for myself.
So I guess I'd sorta be part of that 86%
