550? Damn, America has it good. That's a brilliant deal.

In the UK it costs £769.95 ($997.31) for a brand new S9+ (although that's without a trade-in).

Right now a brand new one on the primary market goes for $669.99-700 or so without trade-in.

Cheaper on secondary. Yeah. But launch pricing was like 850-900 I think. Which is why an XR at 750 sounds not good.

To be fair, the new trade in deals all over the news atm for s9 and s9+ (only recently note 9 getting them) you could get one for the same or cheaper. Pretty sure I saw a deal for the s9+ at like 470 odd after trade in

Stuffs just getting more expensive, it's annoying but nothing we can really do. Even the cheaper options are slowly going up too. Very dumb. And it seems that when we tell them screw you and but new phones as often they don't get it and raise prices, which hurts they're bottom line in the end anyway, real dumb.

Oh look! Samsung following Apple again! But oh no, no no no, Samsung DEFINITELY doesn't copy Apple. Next they'll remove the headphone jack, then they'll remove expandable storage.

Careful with saying that.  By extension, modern iPhones aren't compromising because the headphone jack was removed a couple generations back!  (I actually don't mind it much on my iPhone, but I won't deny that it introduces problems for some)

My logic, my subjective logic, is that most phones still have the headphone jack. I'm talking all phones, not just flagships. The majority oh phones have it. IR blaster on the other hand, is supported at this moment by, I think, some models from Huawei and Xiaomi? I think Honor dropped it as well? But Honor is basically Huawei. And headphone jack is returning in some brands that abandoned it, like Sony and I think Huawei (don't quote me on them, but one big Chinese player is returning it as well).

True i don't, but it's the note 10 i want (assuming all the sweet tech comes with it). And as i said, the note series is always pricier than it's "S line" sibling, so yeah. Here's hoping Note 9 get's a good trade in deal for the 10.

I getcha.  With that said, it feels like the state of the headphone jack is up in the air for the industry at large!  If Samsung drops it on flagship phones, I suspect that will trigger an existential crisis for some.

Me too. I am about to get a used S7 from my uncle to replay my S2.

I just don´t see a reason to spend a lot of money on phones. One of the only reasons would be a good camera.

I reckon there is always gonna be one player who will leave. If no one else, maybe LG since they are pushing it the most. If nothing else, for the sake of it being a huge selling point.

Mind you, we are talking that headphone jack may die soon, but it won't. Even if all phone OEMs dropped, as long as audio industry has it as a standard, it's not going anywhere. I don't fear it will die anytime soon.

This is true. While 'flagship' phones are costing more and more, the mid range and low end phones have never been better. Currently I think the sweet spot for "value" in phones is around $300- $400. But even much cheaper phones can be perfectly adequate.

Great, now everyone is just competing who can jack up the prices more. And people will just gladly ask for more. Ridiculous.

Is anyone really that surprised though? They have a ton of R&D going into these devices, and that money has to come from somewhere.

It's been pointed out by other users, but this pricing includes VAT, and you can't directly convert the price to figure out what it will be in the us. More often than not, you simply change the value from Euro to USD and that's the price, unconverted. Which would make it about the same as we paid before, maybe a touch more. As for the high end of pricing, that also shouldn't surprise, as the spec for the higher end ones are better than the high end ones we have now. Plus 5G, which we already knew was going to be adding money to the price.

But, the real kicker here; these are flagship phones. If you can't afford the best, drop down to another line.

The market will always self correct. If enough people can afford them, and it makes sense for the company to price that way, they will.

The lower end Samsung will be about the same price..so..kinda doesn't.

Plus Android vs iOs.

My only cocern is once the S10 lands, the S8 will be put on the backburner for updates and just get 9.0 with no future updates.

Like it always is? The phone is 2 years old now, it shouldn't be surprising that it will lose the major updates. I just hope it gets 9.0.

On 1/22/2019 at 4:42 PM, Bouzoo said:

Short answer, no.

Long answer. You need calculate for few things.

First, it's Italian price, which means the price is around 25%-ish (approximately) higher than in US. So if the S10 Lite (which is the XR competitor) turns out to be €779 which is $885, the US price should be around $700, and that's launch price. For comparison, XR in Italy is €879, which is not launch price, is around $1000. The full S10 models are going up vs XS/Max, Lite is the XR competitor. So no, XR still doesn't look affordable. Far from it. But to be non-biased, the S10 lineup doesn't look affordable. Maybe the Lite? I don't know. I suppose it depends on what it'll offer. Also, in few months, it'll probably lose 25-30%, which is what happens in europe. So normal S10 should be like €700. Which is how XR is old and still costs €879 in Italy. Here it costs €900-ish.

Exactly, well said.

It should also be noted that pricing isn't a direct conversion, and what's 779 Euro quite often costs 779 USD stateside.

Basically every media out there named the Note 9 the phone of the year, the arguably only flagship that has literally no compromises.

I have high hopes for the Note10, I just hope they don't try to put three cameras in the front screen or something.

Kind of flawed though, no? You're looking at pricing of flagship phones. Yes, they're going to be expensive, just like a high end gaming machine is (and no, you can't get one for the price of a phone). If you can't afford flagship phones, there are plenty of lower priced options.

I wouldn't be against modern smartphones with easier serviceability to the battery. It's usually the first component to go if not the screen.

You can still get the battery serviced, it just costs a little more. I wouldn't want the added bulk having a removable battery would require, and while yes, I could carry around a spare battery for more life, in reality I wouldn't. So I prefer having a larger, sealed unit.

No interest in fast charging battery banks? I mean, I know they're bigger than a battery would be, but they're pretty useful.

Depending on what you do the new Samsung M series might be just what you need. I'm really hoping the next Blackberry Key device is a killer in all regards, including a massive battery. Come on TCL, just throw a 4,500mah unit in there already..

Depending on what you do the new Samsung M series might be just what you need. I'm really hoping the next Blackberry Key device is a killer in all regards, including a massive battery. Come on TCL, just throw a 4,500mah unit in there already..

Samsung M series? I haven't heard a word of them.

No Key devices for me. Physical keyboards that tiny are impossible to do anything with.

Brands I wholeheartedly reccomend (though do have flawed products): Apple, Razer, Corsair, Asus, Gigabyte, bequiet!, Noctua, Fractal, GSkill (RAM only)
