Verizon is doing away with contracts and introduces cheaper plans

The "T-Mobile effect" has finally spread to Big Red. Verizon is done with contracts. Now if only they start adopting more of T-Mobile's policies, that'd be great. But anyways, some things are getting swapped around, including wireless plans and how you pay for your phone. If you're already a Verizon customer, don't worry, you'll still be able to choose these new plans and use your same phone "with some restrictions."

So here's the price breakdown of the new plans:

1GB for $30 per month

3GB for $45 per month

6GB for $60 per month

12GB for $80 per month

Adding a smartphone to a plan is an extra $20 per month.

Adding a tablet or hotspot to a plan is an extra $10 per month.

Adding a smartwatch to a plan is an extra $5 per month.

Larger plans will be available to those that need them, but for now you'll be stuck paying an extra $15 for another gigabyte of data. Ouch.

As for your phone, subsidized phones are no longer a thing. Instead you will have to either buy the phone in full or use payment plans. Verizon has offered payment plans under their Edge program, but that's now being renamed to "device payment option."

These new plans go live next Thursday, the 13th of August.

Ya know, I hate to say this, and I mean I really hate to say this, but Verizon's new plans are cheaper than T-Mobile's plans. That really hurts to say, but it ultimately is a good thing. Think about it. Take Verizon's new 1GB for $30 plan, then add the extra $20 for a smartphone. That's $50. For $50 at T-Mobile you can get the same amount of data, but you still have to pay the extra $20 or so for a smartphone. That comes out to be around $70 per month on T-Mobile.

This news came as a huge surprise to me, and the new plan pricing has me even more shocked, because they're very competitively priced, until you get to their $80 plan IMO. So with this news out... I think I may switch back to Big Red... Not even gonna lie about that...

Thoughts on Verizon's new plans and killing of contracts?

They're gonna have to overhaul some parts of their weak infrastructure or have super slow 4g at 12 kb/s

What are you talking about...? Verizon's infrastructure isn't weak at all, nor are their speeds slow at all. I know this because I use to be on Verizon and everybody else in my family is still on Verizon.

For the $80 plan, yes, T-Mobile is still the cheaper option simply because they offer you unlimited data at that price. The lower priced plans though... T-Mobile is going to HAVE to lower their prices.

Obviously there is this thing called location as a factor that may change your reception.

Also, pressure on infrastructure will be much higher with cheaper prices.

Hah, I'm on the prepaid master race as well. I pay $50 for unlimited LTE on Harbor Mobile, which runs on T-Mobile's network. I love them, but Big Red's new pricing is still tempting...

So you want slower speeds by default and lower coverage than T-Mobile on Verizon?

You do realize that unlimited data puts strain on servers and can crash.....

And T-Mobile is generally cheaper because of it's "lower coverage".

unlimited everything on sprint for 30$ a month. old grandfathered plan:D

the fact that tmobiles price is higher then verizions is a slap in the face. verizon SHOULD be more expensive because they offer a better service. crazy they are getting cheaper.

Yes, they actually have almost better coverage than AT&T now, definitely better than Sprint, I don't care though, unlimited data means more freedom, and plus i'm not hit with data caps.

Coverage and speed. Boost runs on Sprint, which quite frankly has the worst coverage and the worst speeds. Verizon quite frankly has the best coverage and very fast speeds. Not as fast as T-Mobile, but still very fast.

By default Verizon has more coverage than any other carrier so that's why it charges a high premium price.

For those who want unlimited data with the best coverage, well frankly you don't get how it works.

T-Mobile is going to HAVE to lower their prices.

Are they, though? T-Mobile doesn't have the same line access fees. So with Verizon, you pay $30 for data, $20 for line access, and then finance the phone. T-Mobile has $50 for the same data, and then finance the phone.

As well, T-Mobile has unlimited data (though high speed is capped at 1GB) and unlimited music streaming.

if you have to insist you think for yourself, i'm not going to believe you.

i honestly don't care much about coverage, i don't travel out of state often, so as long as all of california has data coverage of some sort, i'm happy

Yeah say that to your basic phone that's only text and call......

What's the point of unlimited data if you have a basic phone........
