Best TDP for i7 11700k with Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE

I got a Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE since i head its a good budget Air cooler but never got into ocing since I got the cpu mobo from my friends old build.

 

Msi Z590 Pro Wifi

32GB Corshair DDR3 3200mhz XMP

Intel i7 11700k stock

RTX3060ti 8GB

1920x1080 100Hz Lenovo Monitor

well Box cooler would mean stock or some weak cooler, Tower cooler is what you have.

I doubt it will change much performance in games though, maybe in all core tasks, you might see slightly higher Cinebench score for example if you use the higher power limit instead of the lower one. (higher in W)

You can punch in the numbers for PL1/PL2 instead of using the popups.

It's not the thickest tower cooler though..

 

I'd hazard it won't keep up with 188watts that well when it's fully heat soaked and adding in GPU temps to the mix, airflow in the case another factor.

OP - Instead of 125w/250w or 125w/188w you can try 140w/180w or 125w/180w, even 125w/165w it all depends on what your cooler can handle...

Lets say your cooler can dissipate 160watts, you can very well set 140w/160w or 140w/188w and keep the Turbo Timer (PL2) at 56s or even lower it.

 

Depends how you want your processor to shift clockspeeds, if you want it bursty in clocks or relatively fixed..

 

Most games will run around 30-120w max depending on processor loads and how many cores it really uses (Shader caching example of 100% workloads for minutes or less), many games will be keeping boost clocks relatively high with minimal CPU usages under 30-50%, and your bursty workloads too.. like web browsing, clocks won't drop much.

But long workloads, it will drop 'some' clockspeed and voltage to reduce power once it hits the target power usage,..and then temps will drop using lower clocks/voltages.

 

Motherboards can do some weird AUTO stuff as well, most of your settings are on AUTO, allcore being set but still appears to be using the Turbo mechanisms, enhanced turbo at auto, could very well be enabled or disabled..

 

Power limiting is the easier method of keeping it in line, as is the TJMax at say 80-90*c not 100*c as a separate use case function you can play around with.

What should I set the tdp to the cooler stats 265watt max and I play rust and mw3 at the moment. I disabled avx and avx 512 dropped 25c but mw3 needs avx. So set base to 125 and Mac 265? It's a dual fan cooler.

Only time iv seen 100 is Durning small fft prime95 but max is 88c stock. Should I set the bios to mimic i7 11700non K?

I have a TR PA120, "upgraded" with Arctic P12 Max fans (up to 3200rpm), it manages easily my 7950X3D that caps at 150W, may work up to 200W but not more imo

And it looks like max power consumption is 293W ??? Nothing short of a custom loop can handle that !!

Plus you may kill your CPU with that much power, look at the current Intel and board AIB debate about crashing Intel chips...

I were you I'd go back to Intel baseline, max 250W iirc

What Should I set PL1 and PL2 to 125 for 1? 2 265? since that is max cooler is rated for?

I tested a PL1 65 and 226 PL2

And should i disable AVX512 since mw3 works with just AVX enabled not both.

Ok I set the AVX to on AVX 512 is off PL1 is 125wat and PL2 is 265 and set to 56s short turbo burst.

I run a 11700k on a worse cooler in my TV gaming system. I set mine to 125/125W mainly to keep it quiet. If you want to balance temps and more performance I'd experiment to find a limit that keeps Prime95 just below 100C as it is pretty much a worst case load. Anything else can usually still boost more.

 

Note even with a power limit, you can still see high temps if fewer cores are used, because they get all the power that otherwise would be spread around all cores.

I was thinking of disabling c-stats meaning it stays at 4.6ghz unless I set manual freq but 4.6ghz 8core cpu 1080p gaming should be fine. Annoying without AVX 512 cpu runs up to 30c cooler.

Prime95 is tuned for and makes good use of AVX-512. It uses more power with it, but you get more performance out of it too. You don't see it in the stress test but you will if you run the benchmark, although it isn't the easiest to understand the output.

 

Most other software doesn't use AVX-512 so you're unlikely to miss out on the performance if you disable it, but this may change over time since AMD supports it since Zen 4.

Cod mw3 needs AVX as does hell divers but I set the TDP 125Watt PL1 and 251Watt PL2 tau 56s.

Small fft about mid 80s with c stats off.

Should I make it 255 or the coolers rated 265 watt

Ok i set the PL1 to auto PL2 to 251Watt and Disabled AVX 512 left AVX on and disabled c-states and set cpu run 4.6ghz all core fixed mode and max temp from Small FFT was 94c but without avx mid 60s. Pc seems snappier to now.

 

This is into i get a good AIO.

Really my guy?....Hardly the main point... (tower cooler having more surface area than box cooler) that we already know... I was just saying it's not the best thickness cooler for trying to  get the most out a 11700K, he should focus on power limits or temp limits being the main focus point.

Once you find the sweet spot for your cooler,..there is really no point messing about tweaking with super tiny adjustments to 'get the most out of it' when in tasks you won't notice the difference between 100Mhz or 200Mhz. (less than 2-4%) if it even lets it boost that much anyway.

As long as your temps and noise are okay, and performance is still acceptable, your good.

Beats being at 100*c anyway. the more you lift limits, the closer it will be again, arguably with more noise as well.

I'm not joking, do you know better tower cooler than Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE? Cause I don't really, though I haven't really had the need to look for those.
