Under pressure from users angry with NVIDIA for disabling overclocking on mobile-GPUs in the GTX 900M series, with its most recent driver update, the company decided to restore overclocking with its next driver update scheduled for March. To those who want overclocking right now (to make certain games at certain settings playable again), NVIDIA suggests reverting to the older GeForce 344.75 drivers. With the most recent driver update, NVIDIA controversially disabled overclocking on its GeForce GTX 900M mobile GPUs, causing angry comments on its GeForce user forums.

Overclocking on mobile GPUs is silly, there isn't enough thermal headroom to even achieve a significant overclock.

There are some desktops that have NO airflow for OC , should we ban desktop ocing?

Some laptop models have good cooling and i have seen reports of 100 mhz on core with good thermals.

Free performance.

They should not have caved in IMO. Or atleast have an option in the control panel, that is defaulted to OC Off, so that stupid people dont play with sliders and kill their Laptops, then come crying...

and that gif... amazingly true

I'm not saying Nvidia should have disabled it, it's just that a bunch of people are whining about something that barely matters

I support what @The Crazed Child

Most lapptops is just stupid to OC on. I have a GT70 and I hit around 80 celcius without overclocks and max fan.

Barely matters to you , its highly subjective.

Some people used this feature and were affected.

Im sure you could get at least get 100 mhz on a decent gaming laptop.

This is just one step forward after two steps back(3.5GB and removal of this feature).

Also barely matters to me, like I said, most laptop under high load reach 80 degrees. I don't understand how someone can possibly overclock with those temps...

I agree and im sure @KingCry agrees as well.

And @vinyldash303. He didn't give me a beastly 480 only for it to turn into a GeForce 210.

I misread the post. @KingCry says that max oc's and FPS keep going down with every new graphics driver, so the next logical step for my 580s will be to load up a near ancient graphics driver only a few revisions older than what came on the CD and see what it does.

Give the 310-320 drivers a shot OCN Team from HWBot recommends those.

Like @LinusTech said. Is this scummy? Absolutely. Are they wrong? Not really.

Overlocking a mobile GPU that was designed with very specific thermal targets and a very specific cooling system that was engineered to work well in a tight space with a very specific load profile...changing that and risking your VRAM, power delivery or really any other part of the motherboard? No thanks.

For people who have laptops that cost above a grand...thats not a part they need replacing. My laptop motherboard on a pure cost basis runs anywhere from 800-1200 as a new part. And I'm supposed to risk blowing that and paying that much to fix it?

LOL. Hell no.

@zappian and others, take this 970 shit and go to the actual 970 thread in the GPU section. Don't turn yet another thread into a pointless flamewar to pad your post count and post meaningless and off topic nonsense.

Good on Nvidia for listening.

I don't think it's a particularly good idea to oc a mobile GPU but if you want to take your chances you should be able to.

My old Quadro FX1700m can get a ~200MHz core overclock and reaches ~85c max.
