I can't remember which Scrapyard Wars it was, one of the earlier ones I believe, but there's an episode where Linus yells at a repair/parts shop for having a box of 2nd hand power supplies for customers to look through, that had broken PSUs without their casing and exposed internals. He yelled at them and told them that someone could be electrocuted from it and he pulled them all out of the bin

I opened up a psu some time ago and I have to say I am really lucky that nothing happened. Really underestimated the danger as well. How long can the caps be dangerous at most btw?

Thanks for that! very informative. So after all my precautions were sufficient lol. Had it lying around 2 days before opening it. But got kinda scared in retrospect when some people said caps can last weeks...

Well I guess you aren't becoming an electrician now. I'm not going to say it was a stupid move, because enough people told you that. Just be glad you are alive... And remember always make sure things are powered off, disconnected, and drained of power before taking them apart. But, I didn't need to tell ya. I've taken so many power supplies apart, just always make sure they have been sitting awhile without power. And no, they don't hold power for years and years.. The only ones that even would be able to are ultra capacitors and you don't find those in anything you'll own most likely(unless you buy them, then you definitely need to know what you're doing)

This is why I turn the switch off on the back of the PSU, then hold the power button on the PC for a good 5 seconds to drain the caps before I touch or change anything inside a PC. Even still, I don't touch anything inside the PSU - ever. 

 

Lesson learned for the OP and glad you're OK.

Wow, I'm glad you survived... those things can straight up kill you. Always leave the psu unplugged for a while before trying to open it and never touch any capacitor with your bare hands.

I agree. For most people it is "water heater looking electric thingie". Speaking of electrolytic ones ofc.

 

I have experience dealing with tube power amps and PC PSU capacitors are babies compared to tube amp ones. Also, in lots of cases you need to work on live circuit and it is definitely scary. Shock from those capacitors can easily kill you.

just because as usual Apple's poor design of their product internals that has nothing to do with refusing to even repair their own computers. As was pointed out in the video the psu in the iMac pro was very poorly and frankly dangerously designed with no Faraday cage to protect even fully qualified technicians who are still human beings which means even they can still make mistakes.

People do not open up PSU unless you are super confident in your knowledge around this stuff. 

 

Getting electrocuted isn't fun don't try this at home.

You have to let a capacitor lose its enegy, which takes minutes. I hope you have a good recovery. Never mess with PSUs unless you are an expert. And, a medical question, did you enter cardiac arrest?

I think so. Im not very sure what happened because I had no memory of it. But yeah I think my heart stopped.
