TeamSpeak gonna make a comeback with TS5? Also here comes Steam!

Discord, just has it all. Functional chat and voice support, so much customization for your discord in terms of bots and freedom and the amount of organization that you can have in it. It'll be hard for them to 1 up Discord.

The only thing missing from TS is a modern text chat and UI, on all the rest TS has it, but it is more private vs discords data selling.

Discord is a classic IRC with added voice comms and a modern UI, just like steam has just turned in to.
the bots aren't anything new and have been about for decades, almost as long as IRC has.

When it comes to the privacy concerns the bots are a huge hole in the fence, as it seems they aren't bound the same privacy policy's.  (that i can find any references to at least, please go ahead look yourself.)

Purly speculative but i can see this being a way discord dodges directly selling any data.

Yeah.....don't really think most business be looking at Teamspeak.

Where I work around, the video and chat conference is already being shifted to something like Cisco Jabber.

I've used jabber before, and didn't really like it. Skype is ok I guess. The emoticon thing is really another for code.

Slack is ok I guess.

Someone was saying something about is switching to hipchat, or something like that. Never heard of it before.

I really hope they don't add a bunch of cringey gaymer shit like Discord has, and besides steam overlay overlays are worthless.. I use TS3 primarily because it's business model is renting servers and not data mining users. You can rent them for really cheap too, like $15 for 6 months 15 slots. It also has a more robust permission and settings system.

Anything is better than Skype though. Facebook group call is better than Skype. Skype disables surround sound on my headset and makes me reinstall its drivers to get it working again. Fuck Skype with the fiery passion of 1,000,000 12" dicks.

That's a very big accuasion / rumour to throw around, got any kind of source or where you caught wiff of said rumour?

People on Reddit and also YouTube. Generally when you don't pay for a product you are the product. And the founders of discord also used to sell information collected from users in their previous product so that's a thing.

When I see some actual tangible proof or even a source of them selling data, lemme know.

Guess how much money the owners of Discord would get if they sold it? A lot cos personal data is worth money to companies.

Yes, I have heard about that and also the other shady things that (I think it was) the creator of Discord did with this previous games.

Personally, I prefer TS to Discord.
Yes, it's not free - but the dedicated servers and low system usage is one of the huge benefits IMO. Discord can get a little CPU/RAM happy on large servers with a lot of people connected to the voice channels.
The only reason I use Discord is that its free and a lot of my friends have migrated over to it - but I'll jump back to Teamspeak in a heartbeat.

From what I've seen, Discord is the best. Interested in seeing just how well TS5 can compete.

Discord is only popular because its free to make a server. Discord is data mining for profit and users are the product.

Look into Jason Citron's previous projects.

As for the whole TeamSpeak vs Discord thing, just use what works best for you??? I personally hate Discord's interface and overall branding but to each their own.

It will be quite difficult for TeamSpeak to do some real damage to Discord's userbase, especially after Discord has been having consistent performance and feature updates for the past 3 years. At the moment at least, there is very little that Discord is doing wrong, to make people actively search for an alternative, but I am sure that if TeamSpeak does some of the things right, they can eventually gain back some long time users who might have jumped ship.

I don't understand why everyone praises Discord. The PC version is decent but the mobile version is trash.

Bugs where when your friends log off it still shows them online until you close and reopen the app

The lack of many / commands, including /me on the mobile client. Many of these commands, again including /me, wind up formated weirdly for mobile users if used by desktop users.

Shortform emotes not completing on mobile. On mobile if you send ":" + "$" for blushing it stays as the ascii for you, but turns into :unammused: for users on the other end with no feedback to you. Wouldn't be so bad if they just used the industry standard shortforms... >.>

Notifications for friend chats getting occasionally dropped if simultaneously getting notifications from group chats.

Sooooooooooooo many little QoL problems similar to the kind of issues I had with Skype. Stuff I've never had on even hangouts for as awful as that is.

Honestly TS and Discord compose 2 entirely different markets. TS3 wasn't built around communities the way discord is, but the ability to have different dedicated servers is somewhere were Discord is lacking.

Just remember: Random people on the internet ALWAYS know more than professionals, when someone's lying, AND can predict the future.

Yeah, I don't discuss or write anything on discord that I wouldn't want passed on to third parties. If a company is willing to give me something for free and their motivation isn't completely transparent, then I assume that they are intending on monetizing me.

Teamspeak has the very large advantage of being able to be self-hosted, putting yourself in charge of the data. When I ran my Teamspeak server, I knew who had access to the information. With discord you have to trust a company (and an American company at that) to not attempt to make a profit from your data.

Off the top of my head:

  • Lack of selecting codecs.
  • Linux version is still beta and a .deb instead of a repo
  • No notifications for bans or kicks from a server, it just disappears from your sidebar
  • Security concerns by loading all servers you've previously joined upon startup instead of select-able by user
