TeamSpeak gonna make a comeback with TS5? Also here comes Steam!

Edit:

it seems Valve have also jumped on the bandwagon, with Steam Chat (beta) taking everything that is good with discord and merging it with their chat.  some parts are really similar...Possible partnership going on? but then again Valve don't do sharing.

Hate to say it, but with all of the time and effort into setting up Discord and scripting bots, I'm not switching platforms unless I'm either paid or Discord disappears over night, like an alcoholic with gambling debt owed to the Russian Mafia.

Yeah, I don't discuss or write anything on discord that I wouldn't want passed on to third parties. If a company is willing to give me something for free and their motivation isn't completely transparent, then I assume that they are intending on monetizing me.

Teamspeak has the very large advantage of being able to be self-hosted, putting yourself in charge of the data. When I ran my Teamspeak server, I knew who had access to the information. With discord you have to trust a company (and an American company at that) to not attempt to make a profit from your data.

Good rule of thumb...

If a company is giving stuff for free, and not actively trying to convert you(e.g. World of Tanks constantly trying to convert free users into paying users), then they're making money other ways. Either through ads(This is the case with the not free, but very cheap Amazon fire tablets), or by selling info to a company that'll serve you ads, use your data for all sorts of other things, such as market research(what a certain population does and doesn't respond to for products & marketing), or worse sold to a government like CHIINAH(Don't go filming anything top secret US govt with a dji drone)

I've used Skype for many years and never had any issues with it. I think it's a great chat program. I've also used TS in the past, and it too seemed to work fine. Never used Discord, so I cannot comment on it.

I use it for work. It wont even send chat messages for hours at a time, then claim you received it when it was sent, leading to many arguments.

Also, it sucks in every way possible, that's just one little portion of the problems.

muh specs

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it.

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff.

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

Personally, I prefer TS to Discord.
Yes, it's not free

But it is for private users?  TS literally hands out licenses if you can prove its non-profit. You can host the server yourself, hell it can even be ran on a Rasberry pi!  Win/Win!

Discord is a shady AF company.  Just google Jason Citron (Discord CEO) and OpenFeint (previous company) and it should be enough if you care about privacy.
