According to this article in the guardian,

"Researchers from the RWTH Aachen University, Germany found that around 1,600 files were currently stored in bitcoin’s blockchain. Of the files least eight were of sexual content, including one thought to be an image of child abuse and two that contain 274 links to child abuse content...

Although court rulings do not yet exist, legislative texts from countries such as Germany, the UK, or the USA suggest that illegal content such as child abuse imagery can make the blockchain illegal to possess for all users."

 

So even holding the blockchain for mining purposes could be illegal... Ugh.

So not only does cryptocrap destroy the consumer gaming gpu market, cause massive pollution, works as a ponzi scheme, is used for money laundring and crminal activites, now it also blesses the world with child porn? Crypto currency is basically as good for the world as ISIS at this point.

we knew they were using it to do laundering of drug money, prevent scientists from finding aliens, stop gamers from gaming with all kinds of negative effects on society, they may actually go out in the wild, and now child abuse. Way to go crypto

use a light wallet, you dont actually store the blockchain then.

Yeah but the hit to the value of the coins would be too much.

 

The problem with a completely untraceable, completely fiat, completely uncontrolled currency is that well basically this thing is bound to happen. Why would people invest so much effort on something doomed to fail? Well I will make no judgement but I would not disagree with your judgement of the devs.

I believe the term is "crapflooding". Some people just do it for the laughs, but a lot of it is done intentionally by organizations that would benefit by the destruction of the platform or compromising the owners of the platform.

Well, unless you know that it exists and can reasonably remove it, then it's fine AFAIK.

 

One example of this is Snapchat. Snapchat stores pictures that are sent on its servers, some of which are inevitably nude pictures of people under the age of 18. However, Snapchat isn't committing a crime, since they can't feasibly sort through and remove all pictures of CP.

 

Same with sites like mega, who host lots of pirated content, but can't conceivably remove it

From the article,
"The blockchain is the open-source, distributed ledger that records every bitcoin transaction, but can also store small bits of non-financial data. So it seems it is possible to add comments and other data to the ledger when a transaction occurs.
I'm guessing it's for if you buy something from someone you could leave a comment with your bitcoin transaction perhaps identifying you as the buyer or other information, ie. "30x bottles of extra strength spray tan, ship to 1600 Pennsylvania Ave NW, Washington, DC 20500, USA".
