Go to solution Solved by GOTSpectrum,

Caught three slots running the same WU (p18202) and ran them all at the same Power-Limit (150W).

The 3070 ti is 38 - 48% more performant that the 2070 Supers at this Power-Limit on this WU.

So yes, the 6144 TFLOPs "Theoretical" FP32 performance of the Ampere cards does appear to be wildly exaggerated by NVidia as compared to the 2070s 9.06 TFLOPs it should be 140% more performant.

Considering that a 2070 Super is 88% more performant than a 1070ti the generational gap between Ampere and Turing is only about half of the gap between Pascal and Turing.

Likely explains why they have to run Ampere at such high Power Levels as running at similar power levels to the previous generation only serves to further highlight the lack of gains in performance.

Similar situation with Intel 12th Gen.

Not so much of an issue if you just want performance at any cost for occasional gaming but it sure adds up running Compute 24x7.

Not really a competition unless you want it to be. All that matters really is that you meet the minimum PPD/WU/days folded thresholds for that event.

The "competition" part is friendly in the most literal sense. It's also not something that has to be thought of as a competition. As far as the event goes, there are no place based prizes yet. Everyone has the same chance to get something.

I view the events and the rewards around them as more of a "thank you" for people putting in the time and effort to fold as well as the electricity costs.

I'm not actually trying to be as grumpy as it seems.

I will find your mentions of Ikea or Gnome and I will /s post.

This is why its called an event and not a competition, its all about increasing the compute power on the network, even if its only temporary, every little helps.

For me the competition is against myself, I try to one up myself by as much as possible.

Caroline has accidental confirmed my suspicions, GOTSpectrum´s 8x H100 folding rig will be ready and activated in time for the event  😁

Even if I did have the hardware I sure as hell don't have the power budget, plus I'm so close to getting my motocycle, can't throw away the past year of saving up. Even if it would be for folding

i have to wonder though, since all you do is fold proteins, why all the different builds? Is it just because you like building computers?

I recon you could massively downscale your footprint if you get a rackmount box, you can fit like 10 GPU's if you get a proper one. Doesn't even have to be loud if you watercool it!

That being said, i do like building machines aswell so i defnitely get the appeal 😉

Yes... I like to build the machines.

Part of the reason for so many different builds is location. Some I have at home (one of these is my home computer), some at work (one is in fact my work computer), and even one more at another location... (spreads out the power footprint & I don't have to pay for all the power this way).  But alas, I can't just keep doing that, hence my latest build that I started up this last weekend - The Rack. Limited to 5 GPU's but it's a start towards consolidation.
