RED Hydrogen One - Specs & Carrier Info Revealed

dizmo

So that fancy Red phone that those with deep pockets have been patiently waiting for had some more of its final spec revealed in a forum post by the developers.

This is what they had to say:

  • Snapdragon 835x SoC
  • Dual SIM, microSD expansion hybrid slot
  • 4500mah battery
  • Weight is said to be 2oz heavier than a typical 5.7" device
  • Said to overall be heavier, more study than your typical 5.7" device
  • Headphone jack
  • Multichannel spacial sound through stereo speakers or headphones
  • 2D & "4v" (holographic) 1440p display
  • Ability to shoot 4v content, front and rear, without an add on module
  • "Unprecedented" carrier support!

red-hydrogen-boosted.jpg

Aside from the general marketing hype of the enhanced audio, display and video features being amazing, I think there are a few very interesting points. The carrier support being one; they made it sound like there's a good chance this will be offered by carriers.

Hardware looks solid too. If that's a custom SD835, I'd love to know what's different. Though likely just a clockspeed boost. The larger battery is great to see. I am disappointed that they didn't put UFS microSD storage in there. Come ON Sammy, push it out there!

They'll show off the units sometime in April, with carrier launches in the summer and unlocked units shipping sometime before that.

I'm stoked. I probably won't buy one, but I'd love to see what they manage to put out.

What about you guys?

If you could get one discounted through a carrier, are you more likely to spend a little more than your average phone to get one?

Yes, but the 835 is still pretty beastly. Plus it's not like anything else can compete with this, it's featureset is extremely unique.

This may be the first time I have seen ounces used for phone weight in an article. I so love the imperial bs.

The ability to google properly is a skill of its own.

American company, American measurements ;) Though oddly they do say it'll only be a few mm bigger than most 5.7" phones. *shrug* Probably because millimeters sound small and  Americans don't know any better.

I'd actually really like to see one in person, I highly doubt the holographic effect will show up as good on camera. Its way out of my price class but its a pretty cool and different phone so I hope the holographic part is well integrated and not just a shitty gimmick

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

Yeah, that holographic display will either be legit useful, works but a gimmick or just old/crappy tech w/ a new name. I think it'll be the second but would be glad if it was an actual thing. I'm also curious to see if they'll offer a storage option larger than 128gb. Of course, one can and probably should get a couple big microSD cards for this phone but having big onboard storage would be nice.

I second the comments about the 835.  Sure it's a great CPU, and not an issue at all, but you would hope and expect that a phone like this would have literally the best thing available at launch, and it's looking like that won't be the case.

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

MKBHD saw one in a more prototype stage and was pretty impressed. I respect his reviews so I'd imagine it's a genuinely neat thing. Very niche, seeing as not much can record in it, but it'll be interesting to see how it's implemented.

I'm most interested about the camera. If this can compete with advanced P&S or potentially mirrorless cameras that's huge.

Yeah, though most boutique phones are usually a generation behind. I'd rather they have it nailed down and working flawlessly with an older SoC than have the newest SoC but lacking optimization. I think it's the former, since they're a small team and don't have much mobile experience.

Yes, because what highly technologically advanced society doesn't weigh their electronics in fracking grains? What kind of moron thought 437.5 grains would be a good basis for a weight system like an ounce?

But hey, the imperial system is amazingly logical?!?

Ugh. Anyways, the phone looks pretty damn cool.

True but this always gives them a "fat" feel for me.  idk how best to describe it... it's like, they charge a lot and try to give the impression that it's super fancy and cutting edge when really it's a poorly designed, bulky, slow thing.  To be clear, I don't actually think that's what this will be like at all, but coming out with a unique device hyped to be amazing when it has last gen specs just instills this impression in me.

$1200

Since this is Red, I'm guessing that $1200 is just for the motherboard. If you want a chassis, that's another $999. Screen? $2200. Battery? $1100. Charging and headphone jack are both $500. And finally the camera. The sensor is $20000, the lens you have to get from a licensed third party, mounting the sensor to the chassis requires a special PCB that's $1600, and finally the flash is $150.

2 unzen are 60g which is not catastrophica given what it is.

Gram is based on a frozen cubic centimeter of water. Who cares what a frenchman didn't have better equipment to manufacture back then. That's also why the kg will have a silicon sphere that doesn't deteriorate:

Either way, the gram is at least logical and using metric is easy to scale.
