Intel and AMDs Furture

Where do you guys see these Two companies going in the near future(5yrs,10yrs,15yrs). Besides putting out new and improved Cpu's and Gpu's.
 

It seems like Intel is targeting the AI learning Industry / VR, Mixed reality industries.

AMD on the other hand, seems to be Targeting Mobile markets and partnering with Big Companies like Apple.

 

Do you think these trends will continue, how will things change, what rumors have you heard?

Both company structures would like way different in 10 years. Consumer CPUs will be dead and it's all Enterprise gear.

I say this because I believe 'cloud computing' is the future.

I see intel pulling punches on products and just edging out AMD in the performance market, AMD surprising us a few more times but still playing catch up and being hot as balls.

 

It’ll be interesting to see how things play out. It’s still a good time to be into computers, hopefully the software can catch up to the core count soon so we can get some real benefit.

I would just love to see a Intel killer from AMD

I think AMD does good in their business and I hope to see them more mainstream in 10 years

In 15 years there will be no AMD or Intel.

New CPU brand will come to life that will have 64 cores.

Single threaded performance will score 1200 points in cinebench.

It will consume 10W of power.

 

Just not sure what brand it will be

It isn't just looking at Intel and AMD in isolation. We have to consider the wider market and any new technology trends. x86 has been a good earner for Intel, and AMD still want a share of that, but they both know they can't rely on it forever. I don't think it'll go away in 10 years, but the continuing trend to produce more task specific hardware will go on. AI might be a buzzword right now and it'll be interesting to see where that goes as it finds it way into more things.

We live in awesome times and I just wanted to see what people think Intel and AMDs role will be in it all.

Hopefully starting to find replacement for silicon because I'm pretty sure 7nm is as far as Intel can go on it, performance gains are only to narrow more and more.

i think they'll still exist in the future. As long as multiple companies exist competing with each other the consumers will win with good offers. The problem is that intel is still using unfair methods in competing because of consumer ignorance. You dont buy your daily PC/workstation based on which brand has the best gaming performance as thats just dumb.

 

Ending up with only 1 brand in a market segment would be the death of that market. For instance, how many car manufacturers and models actually Use nvidia's products as im sure each of those high performance boards cost thousands which would make cars unaffordable.

I see mobile growing a lot. Intel has already licensed the ARM architecture. At the very least I see Intel ARM CPU's for tablets and phones, maybe computers. Microsoft still seems interested in Windows on ARM so we might see ARM computers. I could also see AMD going this route, it might provide more pressure to innovate for ARM based CPU's. The best part would be, 3 very strong contenders hopefully, with AMD, Intel and Qualcomm.

I feel that Intel is going to stay as the mainstream CPU maker. I feel system builders will stay with them because most people know the name and are use to using it. The support and reliability of Intel is just too good for company offering warranty's to give up. However I feel AMD is making a large come back in the enthusiast space. People willing to do there research and want to work on there computer will totally see AMD as an option.

 

Overall the tech world travels to fast for me to make a long term prediction. I want to see the competition stay close that way we get better stuff all the time. But who knows, maybe in 10 years we could all be using 25 core machines. The only thing I think is that system builders like Dell, HP, and other large scale providers will stay Intel.

Apple, except it won't be ARM compatible, but rather Apples own iSA.

I really hope that in 10 years AMD will be gone. Not that I have anything against AMD, it's just that the x86 market could desperately use a new player with more capital behind them than AMD, maybe a buyout?

 

But honestly I see x86 getting pushed aside by ARM in the mobile space (yes, even laptops) and Power in the server space.

 

I see Intel moving onto alternative enterprise solutions like their Xeon Phi coprocessors and FPGAs.

 

I see AMD pushing ARM forward on the enterprise side, dropping x86 to a mostly desktop consumer and gaming role, continuing on their combined GPU/CPU path with HSA.

 

I don't think x86 has a long term future of much more than 10-20 years based on the ceilings it's hitting and modern ISA dynamic translation methods like that the Snapdragon 835 uses for Windows 10.

AMD getting bought doesnt remove AMD. It would still exist, just under another company.
And AMD going bankrupt or something just means there wouldnt be any competition left.

Depends on your meaning of the word exist. Does  ATI still exist? Does 3DFX still exist?

 

And as far as them going bankrupt, if their assets get sold off, they own x86_64 meaning that lisence gets sold off.
