Microsoft announces Office 2019. Coming in 2018?

AlTech

Microsoft has announced Office 2019, the next perpetual release of Office and possibly one of the last.

We don't know too much about Office 2019 other than it's launching in 2018 .

Microsoft has given us some tiny details as to what we can expect:

Quote

Office 2019 will add new user and IT capabilities for customers who aren't yet ready for the cloud. For example, new and improved inking features—like pressure sensitivity, tilt effects, and ink replay—will allow you to work more naturally. New formulas and charts will make data analysis for Excel more powerful. Visual animation features—like Morph and Zoom—will add polish to PowerPoint presentations. Server enhancements will include updates to IT manageability, usability, voice, and security.

Quote

Office 2019 will be a valuable upgrade for customers who feel that they need to keep some or all of their apps and servers on-premises

I'm hoping they make a proper UWP version in addition to the Standard Win32 MFC version.

Perpetual licenses for software are generally not great ideas except if developers or publishers make subscriptions too expensive.

A perpetual license for Office is not expensive considering how long you'll use the software for.

Office 365 subscribers will get Office 2019 apps. if you're fine paying a monthly fee for Office + OneDrive then Office 365 is worth it.

You can always get Microsoft Office for free through your school

"I'm so glad you're my partner in crime."

"It's the power of best friendship, I know how you roll."

"Chloe, my powers might not last."

"Ready for the mosh pit, shaka brah?"

"Yes, we'd be tearing up the highway. And you'd probably want me to kiss you again..."

"I always wanted my life to be special... an adventure... but not without you."

"Because we're back in action again!"

"With great power comes great bullshit."

"Max you are not crazy. You are not dreaming. It’s time to be an everyday hero."

"I wish I could stay in this moment forever. I guess I actually can now, but then it wouldn’t be a moment."

"If that tornado came right now, I would just sit here and watch for a while."

"You're right. We hella deserve this. Splish splash."

"Can we build another pirate fort and keep the world out?"

"When a door closes, a window opens... Or, something like that."

"Listen, whatever happens, I want you to be strong. Even if you feel like I wasn't there for you because I will never abandon you Chloe. I'll always have your back. Always."

That's impossible, using UWP inherently prevents a good experience because of the platform's limitations.

As for the product itself, I wonder who really needs to upgrade MS Office outside of the subscription service anymore. The vast majority of people don't have any use for the new features, or don't care enough to splurge the money for a new license anyway. We're past the age where fancy powerpoint presentations were impressive and people cared enough to spend time in slide animation. The only part of the suite which people actually use in an advanced way is Excel, although many have either moved to more specialized data analysis tools or use scripting languages like python (which is actually excellent for scientific analysis).

Product Support is a thing. If your support runs out for Office then it may be time to buy a new Office version or subscribe.

Meanwhile still using office 2013 and I have copies of office 2003 and office 2010. No real need to keep buying new versions unless you're a business, school or npo.

Sandboxing. Windows is not designed for sandboxing, and judging from everything I've seen so far an UWP app is inevitably limited in its interactions with other, non UWP programs (which are the norm). Sharing, moving and backing up documents would be a hassle (outside of onedrive, which not everyone wants to use and has its own problems) - and importing files from other sources may also be problematic. Perhaps they can find a way to circumvent these limitations, but as far as I can tell they haven't nor do they intend to. I may be a little behind the curve with this information though as I haven't followed the topic too closely since, as I stated multiple times, UWP can and should die as soon as possible as far as I'm concerned.

That's good. Was never fan of subscription services. But still odd to me how come Office was never part of Windows or at least essentials of it.

They used to only include notepad. Now they include WordPad which is a pretty basic version of word but does most of what a person needs. Still wish they would include some basic form of excel and PowerPoint.

I use libre office now and before that it was open office. Didn't touch ms office since 2010 lol.

I don't get why you would need it.

okay excel has some advanced features that might be handy but for text processing... idk

Also, didn't they say something about a final version like forever?

Does this really matter to individual customers? I wouldn't consider putting down $100 for mere software support if the existing software already functions well.

Speak for yourself. If i was running Office 2010 and it was no longer supported. I might as well buy Office 2016 at that point.

~~Ofc this doesn't matter to me since i'm on O365 so I always get the latest Office~~

Still sticking with 2007 H&S, since the changes in all newer versions don't warrant the cost of the upgrade (plus I don't need more licenses, 1 for my desktop, 1 for my laptop and 1 for the 7 year old Vista/Win7 laptop that replaced my Grandmother's 11 year old single core XP machine).

The main benefits of using any version post 2003 is mainly formatting features and a better UI. Though its a shame that MS Office doesn't support plugins unlike Libre Office. It would be good to have a document to epub converter.
