The thing that disappoints me the most is that they don't drop these from a satellite in space and have it drop at my front door.

Can we just sit back for a moment and appreciate the fact that on top of the core count, PCIe lanes, solder, and power efficiency, AMD is even using more expensive packaging than Intel and still charging significantly less?

Oh, and...

Has to be a review package. Like the Intel 5960X one.

Because the cooler necessary to cool such a CPU would have to be big and expensive ;) We know how hot i9s run, we know how much power they draw (an OC'd 7900X 10-core can draw over 600W with the rest of the system under a CPU stress with the GPU in idle...) and while we don't know how TR will perform in that department, we can take an educated guess on that judging by what we know about how power-efficient Zen architecture is and that AMD solders their Ryzen CPUs, a 120mm AIO could be a decent entry-level cooling for TR.

that and also the fact that so many places are reporting this that it seams like a legit thing AMD will be doing it, suggests that it's definitely doable with the stock cooler, as the fact that AMD might be providing this cooler and their track record of their coolers (30W over the CPUs TDPs) suggests that the 120mm rad will be more than enough

As much as the GPU side of things is kind of wonky at the moment, I've got to give the CPU side of AMD some credit for the marketing. If you're going to sell a Premium product, at least package it like a premium product.

Well, looks like I'm buying a Threadripper processor.   Not the Motherboard, RAM, case, PSU, etc.  Just the processor.  I was hoping to find a $800 paperweight that looks that good and here it is.  Every day I can stare at it and say that I own a Threadripper. :D

*No, I'm not really a fanboy who would actually do that, but I wouldn't mind owning the box*

I know at this tier of CPU price becomes less of a factor, but also at this price point wouldn't most people want to buy their own cooling solution.

I dunno about that as they really ain't targeting these at people who build custom loops, they are HEDT CPU's serious work horses, yeah the price brings them into the realm of us mere consumers but rather think these build into rigs with Quadro or Pro cards and than that cooler is amazing, The other use of these is coming in servers and the IBM/HP/Dell will already have a cooling solution in place.

I agree, would suck for the few elite who will buy it for their home rig and will custom loop it but with that budget don't think they going to worry much.

If thats the actual box that you buy it in then I really like it, it looks so fluffy, and protective (the main thing) meaning it's unlikely that the postman who doesn't understand the word "fragile" and "handle with care" and has literally chucked things with those words into my porch, it might mean if I get one it will arrive in one piece

Or protects against a person like @LinusTech who likes to drop expensive items.

Still can't believe AMD's managed to play catch-up after having inferior architectures and CPU for nearly a decade. Even with their low R&D budget.

But can you fit a whole system inside that box?

Edit: Actually, looking at it again its actually big enough seeing that most of SFF cases are actually smaller than that. Are there pictures of the whole box, or at least the backside, who knows it may have cut-outs for I/O ports lol. "AMD ships with AIO and a Case with Threadripper" lol

Considering the lower IPC and clock speeds I wouldn't say AMD completely succeeded at catching up.    They've come rather close though.  Like 70% maybe?

-10% lower ipc

-10% lower clock speeds

-10% ram and other issues that there might be

So still competitive and worth using for cases where Ryzen wins but it needs refinement.

Um... AM4 is also a much newer platform compared to LGA1151... which came out in what... 2015?  There will be issues, and for the most part, they're ironed out now.

Also, I know with at least Ryzen 5 and Core i5s... minus the 1600 vs 7600K, AMD actually has higher stock clock speeds.  (not sure about R7 vs i7).

Also, no, I need to finish school.
