What is so wrong about getting your PC money from parents?

Ignorance is bliss, and I'd rather not hear about how your parents sacrificed an oven to help you pay for something that's totally overkill for a PERSONAL computer.

Most people don't spend $700 on their kids phones.  During high-school I went to two schools, a mid-lower class school and a rich school.  The regular school was full of people who worked (sometimes 30+ hours) on top of school to afford their phones, phone plans and crappy second hand cars.  The rich school was full of kids with brand new iphones and cars bought by daddy.  You act like either a rich kid or someone who has consistently gotten everything they want while being surrounded by others who get everything they want, ie upper class.

its an 1800x and 2 gtx 1080's

Err... no it's not. In Canada (which has more expensive pricing compared to the US), a GTX 1080 is ~$750, and an 1800x is currently about ~$660.

 

So two 1080's and an 1800x runs you about $2160 CAD.

 

For $5800 CAD, you could get SEVEN GTX 1080's and a single 1800x (well, slightly over $5800, anyway).

Yeah but he's running a custom watercooling setup. I can pretty much guarantee that most of the cost of his build went to watercooling stuff, and his CaseLabs case.

 

Of course, it depends on what PC Parts cost in Romania, but if we assume a relatively equal cost when converted into USD, his 1800x and 2x GTX 1080's account for less than half of the build cost.

Well I spent a lot on the watercooling. I didn't buy it all at once, I started buying watercooling parts back in Q3 2014 so 2.5 years ago.

Also why aren't people pissed at people like Linus, Jay, Paul etc? They got their parts 100% free and no one spent money on them...

Because that's their job. They get paid for that, it's how they make a living. Nvidia sends them a new GPU or some shit to review, Linus makes the video, he gets money from YouTube ad revenue, and money from Nvidia for making a video on their product. That's a hell of a lot different than when your parents give up a car and an oven so you can have an overpriced watercooling loop.

Well, Linus, Jay, and Paul run businesses. They provide a service in exchange for those free parts (Mostly, free advertising). Their mommy and daddy didn't buy it for them (no offense).

 

Linus, Jay, etc, work REALLY REALLY HARD to get those free sponsored parts. They provide an invaluable service to the vendors, that, say, NVIDIA wouldn't otherwise get if they gave me the GTX Titan Xp's instead of giving them to Jay for his Terry Crews build.

While I agree in Canada, you have to remember that a lot of places around the world don't offer contract subsidized phones. I cannot say about Romania specifically, but you can't just assume that's the case there.

Idiotic. If you were making substantial money with it for a job then I would say it's fine. But that money could have easily been used for education, food, or medical. I mean are you really getting $6k worth of fun from video games? Honestly the same fun can be had on a $900 PC.

Plus its pascal so the custom loop is super unnecessary.  A 280mm AIO on the CPU and a case with decent airflow would have the same result

But what about Jay getting another Titan for his PC? They could have just sent him one, have him review it and be done. I asked him a while ago how much of his money he spent on his PC and he said 1600$, but he had like 150k subs back then so the parts he has now are probably fully sponsored.

Also I would love to do videos like the guys I mentioned do. Yeah it's exhausing but it's related to a subject I love and I get to help others too. If I do that my parents wouldn't have to help me that much. I am considering doing it but I have to redo my room so that its presentable and improve my english accent

Nothing wrong with this, but I can think of many things that are a better value than a 5800$ pc, if your parents aren't making 60k a year total at least I would consider it not very smart, that's 10% of their incomes combined for a computer for a 16 year old.

I'm also 16 and I have nice things and a lot of that money is from birthdays and from my parents (set amount each month, not asking for something and getting it)

The biggest problem I see is that if you get this much money from your parents you have less of a driving force to get a job, which could end up biting you in the butt later if you always expect stuff to come easy.

Because:

• The company is sponsoring them. If they had a smidgen of the viewers they currently have, those companies would laugh at them if they made a request.
• In some cases, like what Linus does, he (or rather Nick, since he's BD) has to give a pitch to the company for said parts because they'll do some cool project and make a video about it. If the company doesn't like the pitch, they don't give them the parts. But basically they're shooting a giant commercial for the company.
• The companies sent them review units and they have to send them back.

Anyway, there's nothing wrong with where you get your money from. However, a lot of people have different opinions on what you should buy and how you should spend your money from where it was sourced. A lot of people would rather spend money their parents gave them on something that is more worthwhile of an investment than a computer which is going to be "obsolete" in like three years.

 

I'm in the camp of "it's your money, waste it however you want."

It really doesn't matter what Jay does with the stuff he gets for free. He gives them a clear value in exchange for that free part. Perks of the job, my friend.

 

Comparing yourself to tech industry experts and entertainers is the wrong way to get people on board with your purchases.

I think the problem people have with it is the fact that you feel the need to announce it. Your post didn't need the price of the system for you to get your point across, you chose to put the price in the first sentence of the post which is probably what people don't like. It's like people who tell me how much they paid for a car when they buy it for the sticker price, unless you got an amazing deal on it the only reason to mention the price is to make the statement as much about how much money you have as it is the item you're talking about.

 

Try to be more humble and people won't have a problem with you.

Well, I didn't personally have any issue with it, until he mentioned that his parents had to sell their cars and their oven to afford it.

 

I think the fact that his parents are making irrational and irresponsible financial sacrifices to afford an extremely high end luxury PC, is the big problem here.

I didn't read the rest of the thread or even the rest of his post. I read the first sentence and that's all I needed. Looks like the issue I pointed out is the least of his family's problems though.
