Sorry but LTT is an entertainment channel with a tech theme isn't it?

 

I only started watching LTT recently and that's the exact vibe I got. There are plenty of uber nerdy tech channels (not meant in an offensive way at all) out there like Lukcy1.

 

Get over it, who do all these people think they are talking crap about other people?? lol it's not you with over 3.7m+ subs is it. Don't like it, don't watch.

It's pretty much being covered during the thread, but Linus isn't in business of intentionally dropping/destroying stuff. It's like meme that begun in CES or Computex few years back. Heck, even AMDs own personel have dropped stuff in tape when Linus has been present. If you look how many videos they make vs stuff they break, its not that huge amount either.

Paul is really childish sometimes. Like with his Ryzen sample unboxing video. I unsubscribed long time ago. Jay is good, so is Level1. But if I want true hardcore testing, its OC3D. 1800X reviews length was 1h5min.

Main reply to this was also covered (difference between your influence and Linus'). But think it from the other perspective. If you would drop something accidentally and then tweet/fb/anything about it and how manufacturer wouldn't give you another, no one would care. If Linus wouldn't got another piece and tweets about it, Asus has 100k+ angry nerds boycotting them because they were douche to Linus.

 

Another part of that is that warranty only covers mechanical and firmware related problems. It would be home insurance covering rest (in here at least). And no one is covering it if you would do something intentionally. I've lost €100 for bricking mobo. I felt like shit after that, but knew it was my own fault. If it would have been €300 mobo which dropped/slipped and I couldn't get new one from insurance, I'd be mad as hell.

If it would be like Linus doing something stupid, like using Titan X as counterweight and bricking that + asking for new one, I'd agree. He would treat expensive nVidia cards like everyone would have one. And I think he partly treats them as such. But I disagree that Linus disrespects his audience. If he would, we wouldn't see videos we like. He would be like Logan from Tek-- CritTV and doing just whatever he wants and spending money as he likes. Thats disrespecting his viewers.

 

In that short clip at the end of Ryzen review. You see the female employee being shocked (and probably thinking Linus will yell at her). And you see Linus looking at fallen mobo, all serious and probably thinking the options he has. I'm not sure if the clip was shoot after benchmarks or before them. If it was before, we can all imagine stress coming after that. So getting replacement from Asus must have been relief, since shipments of retail boards was still over 1 day away. If Linus would have been sure that Asus will supply another, you would have seen more "I don't care" attitude. And that would have proven your point.

 

In the end this threads feels like another disguised version of you being jelous that they are given free high end stuff in general. You aren't first, and won't be last. But the problem with your thinking and situation compared to Linus is, that for you dropping $100+ tech is expensive failure. For Linus that price point is probably 10x more. Like you dropping mug full of coffee to floor, cup breaking and coffee spilling all over the place. Its would be same reaction from you, maybe not begging-like worded apology for whoever has to clean the space or if you messed something else while doing it.

Don't be ridiculous! He has earned the right to be where he is and the relationships he holds with tech companies - as already said numerous times in the thread - this wasn't a problem for Asus to replace and I never said he did it on purpose - it's the way the request was worded and then aired for likes

There are entire channels dedicated to hardware abuse and destruction - those are garbage and "disrespectful" if you will.

 

Linus unintentionally dropping expensive hardware is not that bad in my opinion, especially when he and his crew did a lot more with it than just drop it. He never made a video where he simply took some new hardware he was sent and broke it for no reason. Also bear in mind that some of the stuff he breaks he will have to pay for, because a few companies want their review samples back and not everything he reviews is sent to them for free.

The same Jay who drilled through an x99 motherboard and killed it? I'm sure both do what they can to preserve their gear (unless they plan to make an inherently risky experiment), Linus is just more likely to end up breaking something because of the sheer amount of videos he and his staff produce, especially considering he is overworked and often in a rush. Jay has a smaller channel and churns out less content which inherently lowers the chances of something going wrong.

Maybe he needed it for something? If Asus was willing to send out another, then why wouldn't he try to use that to his advantage if the one he had broke?

Could he be more cautious with his tech? Yep. Does he need to be? Not really, he has more than enough tech lying around his warehouse for him to use, and he also has a pretty good amount of money in LMG's bank account that he could use if he really needed to.

 

And agian, when you're used to dealing with very high end expensive hardware all the time, it'll become something that you're not as worried about damaging as you would be if you've hardly been around it.

That is true. However, it's also true that an entertainment channel burning money, destroying an expensive car, or smashing a mobile device on camera may be met with criticism by some of its viewers.

The natural course of action is for viewers to choose which type of entertainment they like and which they find pointless or even offensive, and adjust their consumption accordingly. And fort the channels to respond to what their viewers like/dislike by wither catering to them or sticking to what the owners regard as good entertainment.

 

I guess what I'm saying is that it's fine both for Linus to add any form entertainment he deems valuable, and also for forum members to give feedback, and that's about it

The Main LTT videos I watch are reviews. If they are on the main LTT channel and aren't reviews then I typically avoid them.

TL;DR of this post: Unsubbed because Linus drops stuff to get views and asked for replacement because he can. 

 

FYI: he has dropped expensive stuff in the past this isn't new at all. This the way he is. Back in the NCIX days he'd be worried about brand image so he was relatively tame but now he has his own company so he can do whatever he wants. You probably subbed to the wrong channel to begin with. 

 

Whether he did this on purpose is up to people's opinion. He could be lying and the whole thing could be a publicity stunt to attract attention but I do believe his intentions are genuine and actually broke the setup by accident.

I agree that LTT is turning more and more to an entertainment channel, and that most of the equipment might be out of reach for most people/a lot of people, but this is intetesting!

I think that he should review cheaper stuff that is afordable, but I think that he should continue reviewing more expensive things as well.

Also, there haven't been that much new inexpensive stuff or it's just that AMD's Ryzen takes all the attention, Just like they will continue doing now that the Ryzen r5 chips and VEGA is coming out. The r5 will probably be what you say is missing. You will get two chips, that Linus will probably review, that is less than $200. I wouldn't call that out of reach.

 

If you want a channel that just focus on tech, go subscribe to techquikie as well as the LTT reviews (just ignore everything else if you feel like it's not what you want)

I think you've hit it right on the head there, yes Linus has grown into a more Top Gear style youtube channel over the years but it's bought him success and subscribers, so you can't blame him for expanding on that trend. When I want something a bit more educational I will head over the Jayz2Cents or Level1Techs. When I want something a bit silly and entertaining I head straight to LTT. That's the great thing about youtube you can see all these different kinds of content right next to each other for free!!! Just saying if you don't like it, there are plenty of other youtubers who will better fit the sensible content you want from LTT. Just watch their Ryzen review if you don't like the occasionally silly moments.

Funny you should compare LTT to TG. I've been using that analogy for years. Its really accurate, though. They reviews things you can't afford. Make you cringe with sketchy at best experiemnts/projects. And best videos are the ones where someone is insulted, hurt or brokes something.

Since nothing major is going on in the industry he will adapt.. I would love to see review from all the 270 flagship mobos from all major manufacturer (MSI/Asus/Gigabyte) or something more elaborate in the networking sector such as cable termination / structured cabling rules/how to. Still I enjoy the channel but I think in the traditional section of tech there is still stuff to cover that are easy and useful
