PSU Tier List [OLD]

Go to solution Solved by Spotty,

This is a legacy list. It is no longer being updated.

The new PSU Tier List can be found here:

Last time I checked the cx550m and masterwatt 550 were selling for about the same price.

Which one is quieter and/or more reliable? IIRC the masterwatt 550 uses an LDB bearing and the cx550m uses a rifle bearing, but I'm not terribly familiar with fluid dynamic bearings so that doesn't mean much to me. I can't quickly find a good review of the cx550m (only the cx750m, but it may be a different platform than the cx550m, I don't know). Are there miscellaneous aspects about these units I should be aware of?

Are there better units for similar prices (US) right now?

I'm not building anything, this is just a question out of curiosity since I like keeping updated PCPartPicker lists.

The CX550M has a sleeve btw.

Both are fine. Whichever is cheaper is the better to have. I'd probably take the CM.

Whilst I am unsure of the situation now, especially with the resurgence of mining, for a while Jeremy did not want to test OPP/OCP on many PSUs as it could potentially damage his equipment and he was not in a situation where he could replace it.

Jeremy announced he'll be retiring from reviewing in some coming months. So we probably won't ever see that testing on Jonnyguru.

If you're comparing it to the green labelled ones, it's a significant improvement.  I haven't heard coil whine on any of the new CX units myself.

Coil whine can also happen on any PSU.  Some people are more sensitive to it than others, so it can go unreported a lot.  But I do think it was more common on the legacy CX/CS units.

I have a CX650 in my dads machine and it has coil whine, luckily he can't here or so it's not an issue (the old Tagan unit that it replaced had insane coil whine!)

Ok. The Antec EAG650 Pro makes a CX850M feel light, and my VS650 feel like it will blow away at the slightest breeze. Damn its heavy.

Edit: Just an FYI to anyone looking to buy one, there is 1x molex connector at the base of the peripheral connector cables, so its might not be a good option for some people despite where it sits on the list. There is also no rubber grommet around the 24pin ATX and 8pin EPS cables as they exit the chassis.

Edit 2: And 1x of the PCIe 2x 6+2 cables is hard wired.

Quality and electrical performance. Value means nothing. No brand biases. Features don't matter.

Any unit with a sleeve-bearing fan will be deemed no better than Tier 3. Sleeve-bearing fans tend to fail rather quickly when placed in the horizontal mounting position which is what most systems require (the picture used is a PSU mounted in a Fractal Design Define S which uses a traditional mounting system). This is why excellent units like the Enermax SFX unit are placed in tier 3 despite being very good - the fan design holds it back. If mounted in a position like in this Corsair Air 240 then a sleeve-bearing fan should last a very long time.

PSUs that have been bumped down to tier 3 that would belong in a higher tier if not for their sleeve-bearing fans are marked with yellow asterisks

Any group-regulated unit will be placed no higher than Tier 4 due to the dated design of them. This includes Seasonic's S12/M12/M12II, for example. This does not include the S12G.

But I don't like Tier Lists!!!!111!!!!

  Reveal hidden contents

Well I've got news for you! Plenty of people don't like them, but yet this list has helped thousands choose a power supply in an effort to avoid a housefire or awful purchase decision! Since most people do not frequent JonnyGuru forums, do not know what topology means, what ripple is, OEMs, what a primary or secondary is and most don't even realize how much power their components actually consume, this list is quite helpful to those who want peace of mind knowing their selection is not terrible, whether it's better or worse than another unit, and whether they should pull the trigger on a unit they're buying. So, as a snob, you are free to dislike this list all you like and comment on it, but understand that most people do not know as much as you and would rather have a cookie-cutter platform to observe rather than spend hours Googling mysterious and unapproachable things like "Double-forward" or "Schottky barrier rectifier" that, in the end, haven't helped them make a purchasing decision.

Good performance. 0,75% regulation and 15mV ripple on the 12V rail. Into tier 1, or do we wait for a review that doesn't say

?

http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php?name=NDReviews&op=Story4&reid=551

At this point I'd always wait for a review that tests more things before tiering, JG reviews don't have protection testing, transient response, among other things.

TX650M

Is this PSU good enough for ASUS B350-F, Ryzen 5 2600, and GTX 1080?

I think out of all these, TX650M is the best one could get. A little bit of noise won't bother me as much as a cheap quality PSU will xd.
