I know its a bad PSU. Wanted to know what tier it was in. I'm guessing tier 7

Until further notice/more information, I'd call those "Pollution", because it can only be used sensible as a Paper Weight (or defensive purposes).

But the Production for that causes so much pollution, that that is the main thing.

They'd be a pretty useless paperweight. Not heavy enough.

I once overheard a conversation at Guanghua 3C market, a huge 7 floor electronics market in Taipei.

It went something like "Did you hear about the new (local brand) PSU and what they did to it?"

"What"

"They added steel weights! Hahaha"

Steel's probably costly, but it's better than hardened horse manure.

This is Taiwan, the going rate for cheap neighbouring Chinese steel is $2/ton

ONLY $90 CAD, THE SAME PRICE AS A G2 550!

Same price as G2 550?  I'd rather have the AcBel.

But that is an on going problem with AcBel.  They ARE more expensive than everyone else.  Also why we rarely see them as an OEM in retail PSUs anymore.  Ever since they got about 90% of Apple's power supply business, they've lost touch with competitive pricing (since obviously Apple doesn't need to be competitively priced).

FYI

https://www.hardware.fr/articles/962-3/alimentations.html

Corsair CX has a high return rate, probably because of the high fan RPM.

Raider is awful, be quiet looks generally pretty good.

Seasonic doesn't.

Those are return rates, not necessarily defects! That also can mean that peopla are dissatisfied with the unit, for example because the fan has loud motor/bearing noises.

Potentially also the housing bending. Jon noted that due to how thin the steel is on CWT PSU housings it often makes contact with the fan, causing clicking noises.

Highly popular products often see higher return/RMA rates simply because there are so many more sold over other brands/models. We saw something similar with the older CX models. Just saying it could be legit issues, but it also may be skewed perception due to high sales/popularity.

I can say personally I bought a Corsair CXM 550 at Best Buy a few months back.  I thought it was a relatively quiet PSU (and extremely light).  After about a month, system became instable and eventually wouldn't power on.

I opted to swap for an EVGA BQ 850w from the same store.  It's not as quiet (fan always spins) but it has worked in a pinch.  I'll be swapping back to my GQ the next time I change cases.  It'll be a good throw-around psu.

Common cause of failure would be nice to know on these units.  I could still recommend it to people but only if they're willing to risk getting a defect.  Certainly it didn't blow up like a lot of old CXes did, it went very quietly.

Anecdotes aren't really worth anything, any unit can fail.

I'll be glad to admit that this is just based on my experience.  I've done a good bit of reading on the unit and it seemed to be a quality psu for the price.  At least I'd feel safe putting it in a system - trusting it not to kill anything.  It just never leaves a good taste in one's mouth.

Edit: More or less, I wanted to share that story because of the nature in how it failed.

RMA rates, contrary to rates in physics which are <something> / unit of time, are usually percentages, so the amount sold isn't relevant.

Coolermaster Master Masterwatt 550W or be quiet 500 Watt Pure Power 10? Bequiet costs around £8 more, which I'm not sure is worth it for me usecase.

Tried a Corsair 550W grey label but fan was ticking and loud. Also due to recent experiances with other Corsair products I have no desire to give them anymore money.

Will be used in a secondary diagnostics PC which I use to test other components like GPUs (stress tests included) or software. Possibly powered on a few times a week which may include stress tests. Sturdy cables is a bonus.

Was attracted by the Coolermasters 5 year warranty but as far as I understand the Bequiet is better quality. Is the CM much worse?

Thanks and also open to other suggestions (budget is around £50).

In that case, yes, I agree. But also, generally, more people will complain, post about issues and that gets parroted and more wide-spread than it needs to leading to more people believing those units are "bad", when really it's just because you hear more about them due to popularity. In that case the Pure Power 10 is by far the better choice becase its way quieter than the Cooler Master.

Their Implementation of Semi Fanless isn't great and based on the same IC Seasonic uses for their X/P Series...

That's an enormous Problem and one of the reasons people still recommend certain units or go by brand, because people told them that - and they believed that they know what they are talking about...

Totally. Took me a long time to learn who can be trusted and even then, you have to remain diligent and compare results. It's a daunting task to fully research various products and PSU's are ones that are less popular to review.

I take it this is a good replacement?

Current Corsair VS650:

  • 80 standard
  • 4x SATA
  • 4x molex
  • 2x berg
  • 2x PCIe x8
  • Sleeve Bearing fan
  • 3 year warranty

Planned Corsair TX650M (around $10 less than what the VS650 cost me in store 3 years ago):

  • 80 gold
  • 6x SATA
  • 4x Molex
  • 1x molex-berg adapter
  • 4x PCIe x8
  • Rifle bearing fan
  • 7 year warranty
