Google ready to publically shame OEM who don't upgrade their Android devices

As Android users we've probably all been in this situation where Google's releases a new Android version, we get excited by the new feature introduced and promptly wait for the OTA notification on our handsets to pop up. A week passes... a month passes... three months passes... If you're part of the lucky ones, with the right device, in the right country, with the right carrier, maybe, just maybe, that update will come before the end of the year, unless, of course, you got tired of waiting after the first month and went to check out xda.

 

Well sounds like Google has finally decided to acknowledge this problem, and the solution they've come up to pressure OEM to update their handset is... shame them. Yes you read it correctly: google wants to pressure it's partners to update their products by simply publically shaming them, as reported on bloomberg:

Google is using more forceful tactics. It has drawn up lists that rank top phone makers by how up-to-date their handsets are, based on security patches and operating system versions, according to people familiar with the matter. Google shared this list with Android partners earlier this year. It has discussed making it public to highlight proactive manufacturers and shame tardy vendors through omission from the list, two of the people said. The people didn't want to be identified to maintain their relationships with Google.

"Google is putting pressure on," said Sprint’s Sullivan, who has seen data that Google uses to track who is falling behind. "Since we are the final approval, we are applying pressure because our customers are expecting it."

Google essentially as been secretly working on a list of Android manufacturers that are ranked by how up to date their handsets are based on security patches and Android versions. This list could turn out to be disastrous for handset manufacturers when we consider how hard it is to compete in this market place specially if consumer decide to take notice and rightfully side with the companies that are ranked on the top of the list (and now that i think about it probably won't have a huge impact cause this solution requires the consumer to take notice... the retardedJoeShmoe to take notice... yeah, good luck with that Google), and may be a more effective solution than suing them like it happened to Samsung against a Dutch consumer protection group. 

Of curse this may not take in consideration that in some countries wireless carriers are a bigger obstacles that are capable to old patches released by the OEM for, supposedly, "testing". I mean even HTC at one point did try to explains the delays on their updates by releasing this infographic showing just how carriers might affect the release cycle:

Frankly i've already said what i sincerely think of this solution: it will not work. The modern consumer doesn't like to think and unless Google pro-actively tries to  make this list seen by everyone by any means necessary, only a tiny portion of the population will now about it, and for the majority will be the same people who already knows about it right now and just flashes the new rom on it's own.

of course there's that route, but other OEM than to bring a lot on the table, if i were on a Nexus i'd would have ended up waiting 4 years for features like multi window or floating apps or even Samsung's amazing S-Pen (which some days i really miss it ever since i upgraded to the V10)

How about you update your own crap instead of being lazy Google?

 

What if Microsoft started shaming Lenovo for not updating Windows? Makes no sense. Why is it that Linux stuff always sucks so badly in the consumer space?

The issue is Google did update it but phone manufacturer decides if they want to update their phone not Google.

Microsoft solution for the Windows 10 Mobile is, so far, the best.

I think Google should take a page from this.

 

Basically, while at first with previous version of Windows Phones, Microsoft tried different tactics to by-pass carriers and manufactures blocks, it wasn't perfect, and many faced problems in not getting updated. But Windows 10 Mobile seems to be a success so far.

 

The way Microsoft is doing is as follows:

  • EVERYTHING is an app. Like everything. From SMS/MMS, to phone, to camera, gesture system, glance screen (that is when the phone is off/sleeping, you see the date and time and notifications, consuming very little power, especially for devices with OLED screens), everything.
  • All OS updates are managed by Microsoft servers like Windows updates, and not manufactures or carriers.
  • Firmware can be updated apart from the OS, allowing each manufacture to deliver firmware upgrades when they want. They don't need to "baked them in" the OS to deliver them.
  • OS and firmware can upgraded with plugging the phone to your computer and using Microsoft Device Recovery Tool, so if somehow things are blocked, you can by-pass it all.

Now it is clear that Google doesn't want to handle this, and public shaming will not help anything. It will hurt Android. Many manufactures can't support their phone for a long period of time, because, due to competitive pricing, the price doesn't allow many years of support, let alone 2 years of continuous.. as Android updates are released, updates. And carriers wants to make sure its users gets the best experience. Because if a phone drops calls, or miss getting calls, or miss getting text messages, or drops from internet constantly, because some firmware creates a bug with the radio transmitter or something... it will be THEIR fault, as the user will think it is them the issue, not the phone. So they don't like that. In Windows 10 Mobile world, it is about at your own risk updating without your carrier approval, if they block it.  Microsoft tries to avoid such problem by working with the carriers if the firmware updates something related to them.

 

So it is complicated, but Google approach doesn't help. They are being cheap ass, that is all. And I think all it will do, is have manufacture only make phone that are popular only. What I mean, is that they won't try to innovate, or cater to niche or smaller markets, and this will drive the cost up, as extended and more support is needed.

Only because Google allowed that to be an option. I mean why is that even possible? Again, Microsoft just updates Windows directly. Lenovo cannot and will not prevent that.

android is open source google has no choice on whether or not that is an option. and google doesnt own android . windows is closed source

One of the few reasons why I prefer IOS and W10M over Android (except maybe Nexus devices). I'd rather not have all the fancy customisation of android for a timely and guaranteed updates since I tend to keep my phone for a long time and I can't be bothered doing custom rom and whatnot and risk bricking my phone even if I'm a tech savvy person.

If I am going to buy an android I am going to buy a $5 one from Walmart and mess around with it then I will probably brick it and say oh well and use my iphone. Also Apple sucks at making IOS not buggy. IOS7 was the best so far and every upgrade beyond that has been buggy. They also slow down phones like the 5C making you upgrade. They do this on the laptop side too

Pretty much this. Android still is, throughout very much still based on Linux. Which Linux is open source code and it's fine if Google has closed source elements. The basic building blocks of android is from open source code. Therefore Google has a bit of an obligation to upkeep that open source nature of the source code.

Just further proves the point. Android is still Googles property and they chose this approach. Also again shows why Linux based stuff sucks for consumers. Too many "distros", too little support.

edit: android is not owned by anyone and i love android for its custom rom community, xposed modules, etc and if it wasnt linux based and open source none of those would exist so i would disagree with you on linux based stuff sucks

It isn't 100% open source, but it is very VERY open, much more open than closed.

Personally , i have a moto G , and I'm actually very pleased with Motorola's OS upgrades , as they are still supporting hardware from 2013 with android marshamallow ( and supposed android 7.0 update when it comes out ) . But I've heard this isn't always the case with other handset makers..
